Do You Kick or Receive?

You never choose to kick to start the game. If you want to start on defense, you DEFER your choice until the start of the second half. If you choose to kick, the opponent gets the ball to start the game AND can choose to receive the ball after halftime.

I would rather kickoff than receive. The offense in Dallas has been slow coming out of the gate for some time now,pre-Garrett even.

I also like the possibility of getting back to back posessions. If you can score to close out the 1st half and then follow it up with a score to open the 2nd half I think that can be a huge swing in a game.

Since they changed the rule a few years ago, kicking is obviously the right choice for this reason alone.

I just don't understand why every team doesn't defer when they win the toss. It's not even a debate.

When you KO to start the game, you have a good chance of stealing an effective possesion away from the opposition.

Here's how........you score or punt to the opponent with little to no time remaining in the 2Q.

Now they have a wasted possesion and you're getting the 2nd half KO.

As far as Saturday goes, or any road game, it's even a greater benefit.
Who wants to start the game on offense when the crowd is at it's loudest?
I'd much rather KO and start on defense. Give myself a chance to make a big defensive play and perhpas settle down the fans.

Add to all of this the fact that we have the best KO specialist the NFL right now.

I thought they changed that rule a couple years ago. I thought you could now choose to KO without losing the 2nd half KO.

yeah that is the mechanics of it, but the question was basically do you want to play defense or offense first.

bots only deal in precision

remember that

I can understand that approach. But, confidence in your defense to shut down that second half drive would, and has consistently for the Saints this year, meant excellent field position. So basically, it is based upon confidence. Confidence in your offense to score on the opening possession and confidence in your defense to adjust at the half and shut down the opponents' opening drive.

Without that confidence the "extra" possession in the second half may make more sense.

I have confidence that the Dallas defense has only allowed 5 1st qrt TD thus far this season and only 1 TD on an opening drive this season.

As I said would much rather have the opportunity to build a bigger lead in the 2nd have or cut into a lead to start the 2nd.

No doubt part of my feelings has to do with playing defense from pop Warner through college but I also see a bigger upside with getting the ball in the 2nd half

Well, I hope the Saints do get the ball first so we can see which of those trends will change.

good grief.

You people can not complete a sentence without some sort of obnoxious arrogant bravado.

again congratulations on your superbowl championship in 09, basically that is the only response we can give to you people. Every response you have is the same as the one above.

nothing worse than chest thumpers.

As I said even if you get an opening TD there is still 3 plus qrts left to play, you will not win the game off the opening kickoff.

Excuse me? We were discussing the merits of kicking or receiving. Doomsday1 made a good point on the Cowboys trends. I basically said I hoped that the Saints did get the ball first so the two trends could be tested. Now, as to how that is chest thumping or bravado, I am at a loss.

And, please, can you come up with something original?

Kick. Have confidence your defense can force a punt and then you already have the advantage.

Agreed. But it has been those games this season where the Saints didn't score first that things remained tight.

VS other teams. Different game vs a different team in a different situation.
Results unknown.

Yup. Two different philosophies. Two different teams. I know which philosophy the Saints use. They always take the ball first given the choice. The only way to tell which philosophy wins out in this wek's game is for the Saints to have the ball first.

That said, I am sure that Wade is very well aware of the fact the the Saints prefer the ball first and I wouldn't put it past him to take the ball if the Cowboys win the flip.

I have no idea of what the Cowboys will do if they win the toss, I know what I would do. It does not make me right but as I said I see more upside of taking the ball in the 2nd half where I feel games turn.

I would say that playing the Saints or anyone else. My feeling has always been you don't win games in the 1st qrt but setting the tone in the 2nd half goes a long way in determine the outcome of a game.

There is not one correct answer for every team. However, if you ask me, the correct answer for the Dallas Cowboys is to kick, and I am quite certain that it is not even close to being debatable. This news should not be anything new to anyone, but the reality is, is that the Tony Romo and the rest of the Cowboys offense are notorious for starting out slowly. Why waste a possession when you know almost certainly you are not going to score a TD?

I forget the stat they showed in the game vs the Chargers, but it is somewhere in the double digits as far as the last time the Cowboys scored an opening drive TD. What is absolutely hilarious to me, is that the coaching staff still chooses to take the ball first when given the chance. Yet another bonehead move by our staff..:banghead:
