Do you think BP spends big money on FA this

time around?

We've tried taking relatively "low priced" FAs BP's first year with the Cowboys. I think that was D. Campbell, Richie Anderson, etc. if I remember correctly. We basically waited until the first few weeks of FA had concluded to get better value. . . .

We've also tried taking some high priced FAs lately. For instance, Rivera, TO, Fergy, Vandy, and Henry.

Looking at our holes going into 2007, we probably need a FS (and JJ seems set to finally have RW play closer to the LOS in 2007), a pass rusher to complement Ware, a back up NT to rotate with Fergy, and 1-2 OL, depending if we keep Gurode and Colombo.

IMO, a pass rusher in FA is going to command big bucks, if one is even available by the time FA rolls around (A. Thomas).

A decent FS should be more affordable. Not a "cheap" FA option, but a moderately priced one.

If we cut Rivera and upgrade, the Guard position should not break the bank. But again, a starting quality Guard will be moderately to fairly expensive as well.

As for a back up NT, there we may look for a cheaper option or go to the Draft. After what JJ paid Fergy, I don't think he's going to pay a lot for a back-up to rotate with him.

On the face of it, it looks like while the pass rusher is going to be expensive, if one is available, the other upgrades shouldn't be too expensive.

During the first few days of FA, I guess I'd definitely focus on getting the pass rusher and the OL. The back up NT position could be had after FA "settled" down a bit. As for the FS, that would come somewhere in between in terms of a time line.

Parcells will probably bring in Adalius Thomas. The Cowboys have a serious need for another premier pass rusher.

the '05 and '06 offseasons weren't cheap, esp. '05, 30 mil in bonuses for 5 players, we won't be on quite that level this offseason, but I wouldn't rule out another '06 offseason, quantity over quality, a big splash, and the rest moderately priced free agents

Honestly outside of maybe a middle of the road offensive lineman, and maybe a middle of the road tight end, I want us to stay out of free agency at all costs.

Free agents do not equal championships.

Good drafts however do equal championships.

We need to draft better players and develop them properly and then ultimately give them time.

No more free agents.

Not even spending some (serious) money on a proven pass rusher (assuming one is available)?

It's difficult to know if Ellis is going to make it all the way back. And with the Draft, who knows if one falls to us.

I think this Defense is dead if we don't get atleast one more guy to get to the QB and complement Ware.

One other thing, hopefully Hannam, who is on IR, will be able to contribute in 2007 at the TE position. I think we had some bad luck there.

Teams are going to have a ton of cap room this offseason, I doubt you'll see many moves.

if you can get thomas at the right price and find an everydown spot for him then yeah. With this roster right now it will be tough to pay a linebacker elite money. It will just be tough to do.

I am all for thomas though. He has double digit sacks two years in a row.

He is 6"2 270 so he has the size.

The question is, does he make his numbers because the inside guys get such a push? Do teams scheme to take away reed and lewis and then thomas is allowed free runs?

I am not sure. We need two more pass rushers in my opinion, then we need ellis to get healthy and we need ratliff and hatcher to develop.

Not a new one... just depth. I really like brett pierce and the role he played here and it is unfortunate that he was hurt.

I am thinking in the hannam mold, and I hope he comes back, he has that same condition beriault had so that is not good.

it seems that approach is generally more successful. then when you get a bust like Hannam it doesn't hurt as much.

true, and you're not putting a quarter of your salary cap in 3 players, who may or may not, fit the system

We need one other guy that the O must worry about as much as ware, or at least close to it. I can tell you right now that Ellis will not have that kind of respect now or ever.

I am thinking we don't do anything drastic.

My guess is depth at NT, depth on the OL, maybe a veteran backup QB....

But for those pinning their hopes on Adalius, or Lance, or Steinbech, I wouldn't hold my breath.

why would dallas bring in thomas when jerry already said ellis will be back this yr? along with carpenter and ware. bringing in thomas and a 7-9 mil a yr contract would be utterly stupid

are there any ex parcells players in Fa this yr?
We had 8 starting free agents last season and only 2 of them were former players of Parcells. Both were very effective players (Ferguson, Glenn).

We need to really go for it this year. I truley believe we are a lot closer than most here believe.

We can not and should not have extra money to move to the 08 cap.
We have to be aggressive and smart. And we have to strike quick in FA.
THIS IS KEY BECAUSE THERE IS MORE MONEY THAN TALENT OUT THERE. Perhaps more so than in any other year.
We have to get the guy or guys we really want and make them an offer they can'y refuse. Maybe 5-10% more than they were looking for and DON'T LET THEM LEAVE WITHOUT SIGNING! Pull a Corleone on them, assure them that thier brains or signiture will be on the contract. Just like the Colts did with Viniteri, you leave and the offers off the table!
This is where JERRY can be huge...he's gotta sell these guys!
Parcells...Cowboys...2007 Superbowl!

I'm serious. We need team officials knocking on doors at 12:01am with limos and private jets waiting.

There's a school of thought that with so much money, most FA's will get signed up before FA starts. Couldn't disagree more. I think less guys are gonna sign up before FA starts. These guys know how much money is out there and want the bidding to begin!

That's why we have to hit it hard and early. Get them in here and get them signed.
