Do you think Jones has been hurt by early success?

I really don’t think Jerry would be interested in owning the Cowboys if he couldn’t play ball. He really hasn’t swerved much from his intentions initially.
No question about it as he was emphatic that he would be his own Tex Schramm. Had he ever owned anything and not run it? There's a very good reason why he sought out the other maverick in the NFL as his mentor. And followed suit suing the other owners.

The funny part about all of this discussion about being his own GM is from a bunch of GM wannabes. You kiddin', own a NFL team and not play with it? Not me, I am neck deep in that. I might hire GM's to fire ever so often to deflect the blame and I sure as hell would have pulled the plug on that forum when it turned on me but I would run it.

The difference is I would be more on the risk side than reward as Booger is with players but when you really think about it, what is his risk? There really isn't any and he knows that if he'd have drafted Moss, he would have been fine. He was something back then that he is not now, subject to public opinion.

No.

Jerry has been hurt by putting his ego before the team’s success.

Once he realized that, as an in-title-only GM — which is exactly what he was during the Jimmy Johnson era — he was never going to get as much public credit for the team’s success as would his HC or the players, he became an active GM.

Winning a third SB, while keeping the departed Johnson’s team still largely intact, certainly didn’t help as far as diminishing his fantasy of being a man who builds champions.

Twenty-two seasons of postseason futility since doesn’t lie.

I'm going to say that winning a SB with Barry Switzer hurt us down the road . It validated Jerrys theory that any coach could win a SB and made him continue to devalue the coaching positions leaving us in the predicament we are in today .

If the SB didn't show Jerry the value of a good game day coach we will continue on our ride to mediocrity till he is gone . Its very sad but this guy as good as he is in business takes the long way around in team building and should move over and let a young guy build this team

How could Jerry have been hurt by as early success? It helped him become a multibillionaire and is one of the most powerful people in the NFL. He’s built arguably the most spectacular stadium and training facility in the league and the Cowboys are the richest franchise in sports. Plus Jerry was just inducted into the Hall of Fame. I doubt he’s hurting.

And I think you were right on about his coaching desires like his Arkansas teammates . Jerry just didn’t want to be held directly accountable or in a position to be fired .

That’s where the Revenue brilliance came in. Once he had the streams in position to not be effected by the results on the field he can do as he pleased.

In the beginning he needed the results on the field to set the stage for him. If he hadn’t had that success his way wouldn’t have lasted long in Big D as you correctly expressed.

So Jerry got those three Super Bowls early on in his tenure as owner/GM. Most of us can see those championships had mostly to do with the say Jimmy ran the team, but Jones can't or won't see that. It makes me think his early success has convinced him that he's some kind of football genius and he'll figure it out without help. We've seen that in world leaders who have a lot of early success and then think they're infallible or sent by God or whatever and are in for a rude awakening. It seems like Jerry is incapable of seeing “For the good of my team, I need to step aside.” Seems like he'll be GM as long as he can sit upright. I wish he would realize he and his team would be better off if he enjoyed his twilight years retired and going on trips in the Caribbean.

Here is the problem. Jerry watched Jimmy build that cowboys team and thought it was easy....... and fun. He convinced himself that it took no special talent and that anyone could do it. That is why he hired Switzer who had been retired for 7 years and never coached NFL football. Jerry has never respected the role of a HC. Go google his quote from 2010 on Parcels. In Jerry's mind, the head coach is just a title.

And the oddity of that is that Booger respected his HC at AR as much as any man he ever met. But was that as a HC or a man? Broyles, father of the pooch kick, was not known for being a great sideline HC.

It is surprising that Booger would hold HCing in low regard after being around a hands on coach like Johnson, Hell, he'd get down in a 3 point to show an OL how he's going to get hand slapped. His lesson wasn't from Bear Bryant hanging out in a tower over the field. But I agree, he doesn't respect that position as much as he should. It is all about the players to Booger.

He's gone out of his way to prove that he knows nothing about how to run an NFL team.

Hurt? No. All it did was inflate the ego. If the early success didn't happen we might not be stuck with the dipstick Garrett now.

And to some extent Jerry is right. Those great coaches in NCAA were great recruiters. Then once you build the reputation as a powerhouse the players basically come to you.

That eye for talent is probably their greatest virtue. Several great recruiters were not always the best field generals .

If it was only about their on field coaching abilities then they’d win every year but it revolves around the talent they have.

It’s possible Jerry just doesn’t have “it” anymore if he ever did. The NFL is anything but a static league. It changes all the time and even the most successful components become obsolete—Landry, Gibbs, Parcells, etc.

I think Jimmy was the one who really got him disliking that position. From what I remember and read, Jimmy was not very respectful of Jerry. He treated him like an old fool who had struck oil and got lucky enough to buy an NFL team. ............. sometimes being right and being smart aren' t the same thing. Jimmy was absolutely correct in his assessment of Jerry's football acumen and so was Parcels ( "you have to convince jerry to go against his instincts") , but he handled it completely wrong. Probably cost us 3-4 more super bowls.

However, the eye for talent concerning the NCAA and the NFL is very different. You must be able to discern that difference in making the jump to the NFL as a coach.

Offhand, I'd say he's gone out of his way to prove he never did have "it".

His problem is the coaches he hires. He doesn't respect the HC.

He had success with a great coach in Jimmy and Bill Parcells gave the Cowboys a pulse and set us up for a rebuild with the development of Tony Romo.

I don't get why he wants these no name coaches so much when its clear the Garrett's and Campos just don't cut it.

if it is possible to suffer from an overabundance of hubris, jerry is the guy. after jimmy left, jerry took total control of things, and with his first draft pick, he chose shante carver. many coaches are referred to as "genius". jimmy actually had the i.q. to go with the moniker.

Yes, it came a bit too easy early.

Still, Jimmy Johnson coached almost as long in Miami (4 seasons) as he did in Dallas (5).
His records were
8-8
9-7
10-6
9-7

win% .563

Because having a coach like Jimmy he wouldnt receive the football credit he’s pursuing . That’s what this has all been about since Jimmy left. The only exception is when he needed a stadium built.

Here's some trivia

Record's without each other

Jimmy without Jerry___.563 winning %
Jerry without Jummy___.529 winning %
