I think that Ogletree is a lock to make the roster. He has shown way too much talent esp for a rookie.

Stanback might force them to keep 6. Now that is not to say that he has any skill as a WR. He has been showing an extra dose of suck so far this year but his ST work has been tremendous so far this preseason and so many of our other backups are hurt.

In Jerry's 20 years of owning this team (modify to 16 if you want to start post-Jimmy) I am trying to think of the times that the org has made a significant talent evaluation mistake when it came down to roster cuts that was driven by "Jerry's Pet Player."

Someone help me. I'm not coming up with any.

PS - Don't suggest QC unless you can point to a talented QB we let go because QC was Jerry's pet.

Does anyone else share my worry that Jerry will keep Stanback at the expense of Oggie purely based on the fact that he drafted Stan and was determined to make him a "WOW" player?

I am worried about that this staff has shown the inability to cut bad players and bring in talent to challenge or take over their spots.

I know a lot of people, including myself, were upset with Jerry for keeping Alan Ball over Oglesby and I must say Jerry and co made the right decision on that.

Alan Ball is developing into a nice player for us.

And Jerry gets the information from the scouts. I doubt Jerry is scouting these players himself so he takes the feed back from those he has hired. I don't see blame here, we took a shot at a player and thus far he has not panned out. If there was such a thing as a crystal ball that could see what a player would do we would never miss on a player.

He thinks he is.

Talent acquisition is a different issue.

The OP's question was will Jerry cut Ogletree (a consensus preference by fans on this site) to keep Stanback who some perceive as his pet.

Personally I don't see any precedence for this from Jerry. I also don't see where we've made glaring mistakes in our cutdowns from years past. ie, kept a player who busted at the expense of someone who can really play (which is how Ogle-Stanback is being touted).

Maybe Petermen in favor of McQ?

I don't worry about the #5/#6 WR slot.

If Dallas ever gets to a point whre they need to utilize the #5 and/or #6 WRs then the season is lost.

FACT!

I hope Ball turns into an on-field contributor.

At this point based upon real game contribution, I think its hard to get very worked up about a decision to keep Ball vs Oglesby either way you slice it.

Fan websites are famous for getting overly worked up about the tail end of the roster when most of the time the players in question never make it out of obscurity at all.

I have only seen the TN preseason game. Reports on OT (the contra TO maybe?) are that he has stood out. BUt if the Dallas staff cuts him in favor of Stanback I am not going to have a cow over it because most of the time I think the staff's get it right or the decision was immaterial to begin with.

I hope OT is the exception to that. But i'm not going to "worry" about it.

Well, he may start off as a #5 but the hope would be that he could develop into something more over the next couple of years. Crayton didn't start out as our #2, for example...

I don't buy that. Jerry has listened to those he has hired and has sided with his scouts on different occasions. Why hire a scouting department if you plan on blowing them off?

Ogletree may not be 100% ready to be a top tier NFL receiver (if ever), but he's a lot more polished and ready than Stanback is at this point of his career.

The more Ogletree shows the coaching staff the more opportunities he will get. If he can show an ability to make plays as a return man or when he is put into the games the more chances he will get.

Why retain the title of "GM" if you don't plan on overruling somebody?

Everyone knows Jerry has final say.

Does he take the advice of his scouts? Yes, he probably does because he isn't an idiot. Jerry's as much a fan as any of us here so hes overzealous at times but he isn't an idiot. So yes, he most certainly takes the advice of his scouts.

However, nobody can sit here and say that Jerry hasn't or wouldn't ever pull out the trump card make his word the last word on the matter.
