Does Glymph make Ellis expendable/tradeable?

Before you flame me hear me out.

Everyone knows Ellis would rather play DE.

Playing him at LB is almost the same as playing a rook...heck, it's WORSE than playing a rook because at least Carp has played LB his whole football career!

Since we are so deep at LB, isn't it feasible that we can trade Ellis to a team that needs a DE and pick up either an OL or a WR?

Not saying I don't like Ellis. He's ok...I just think with Glymph, Carpenter and Singleton he is the one that we can get a decent player for and he would be happier playing DE at the same time.

Thoughts?

Even if Ellis dosn't play linebacker, I think we still need him as a nickle pass rusher.

I dunno...between Canty, Spears, Hatcher and Glymph (who can line up at DE, too) I think we have it covered.

No, but I think it makes Singleton dispensable. At some point you have to stick with the youth and let Singleton go.

Ellis is much better than a rookie. BP has stated that the responsibilities of a 3-4 OLB vs a 4-3 DE are very close and Ellis has not had to make much of an adj there. Only the coverage assignments are the main difference.

Singleton played well, I am not sure it would be the smartest move getting rid of him, but I would hate to lose young talent.

Tough choice if you ask me.

My initial thought would be this: Ellis is a proven run-stopper/pass rusher and only needs to prove he can cover when required. Glymph can get to the QB against second and third teamers but can he do it against a starter? Also, can he stop the run? Those are questions that must be answered before Greg Ellis becomes an expendable commodity.

I agree. I think Glymph showned enough to get a look playing aginst 1st or 2nd string competition but sat he was going aginst 3rd of 4th string players and 1 sack came because no one blocked him at all.

No.

Why?

Ellis is a better football player than Glymph.

Having Jacques Reeves doesn't make Terence Newman expendable..

What's it going to be then, eh?

I fail to see how a Kalen Thornton clone could make anyone expendable.

We still don't know about those players. And I don't think they are better pass rushers then Ellis.

I would hardly call Ellis the Terence Newman of DEs. Besides, who would you rather have playing CB? Jacques Reeves or Roy Williams? As good as Roy is he'd get burnt playing CB.

Well, we know they fit the defensive scheme and that they don't whine about their job publicly.

True. But that dosn't make them better pass rushers then Ellis. And so far it seems that Ellis fits the scheme too. ;)

No he isn't.

But he was still 24th in the NFL in sacks last year.

I kinda doubt "Junior" would be able to do that.

AND you've completely disregarded run defense responsibility. Ellis is considered to be a very good run defender. I still remember "Junior" getting caught inside on a nice outside gainer for the 'Hawks'. Scott ("KC's defense truly did suck") Fugita use to do the same thing on a regular basis.

No I'm not interested in seeing any more of that type of thing quite frankly.

I think we'll stop hearing Ellis whine once he experiences some success at his new position.

1) You equated Ellis at LB to Newman at CB. No. Newman is a more experienced and better playing CB than Ellis is a LB.

2) The intended point I was making is that even if a player is really good (which Ellis is not. He's a bit above average as a DE) if he is playing out of position he is probably the same as the average guys at that position.

Yikes...so our top sack guy was in the bottom third of the NFL? Not much to crow about...

Wellll, we don't know unless he gets a chance to play, do we?

Really? Jeez, it seemed like we were getting run all over last year. Maybe we weren't but it sure seemed that way to me.
