Does the 1994 NFC Championship game still bug you?

1981 was much worse because we let the game slip away, and the fingertip tackle of Drew Pearson was the final dagger in the heart. Conversely, we never led at any point during the 1994 matchup.

even after troy's mishaps in the first quarter....we damn near won that game.

mike owned sanders in that game.

i'm thinking 11 or 12 receptions for a buck 90?

Take away one of the three early turnovers. We probably win.

Take away the end of the first half bomb to Rice. We probably win.

Take away the non-call against Deion. We have a real chance.

Take away the stupid Switzer 15 yard penalty. We have a shot.

Take away the Boniol missed FG on a horrible field. Its a closer game at least.

Take away the horrible field. We probably walk away with it.

That game was heart wrenching knife to the heart. Couple that with the fact that I watched it with a girl I was trying to score with it for the first time who was, unbeknownst to me beforehand, rooting for the 49ers and it was a truly excruciating day.

I live in the bay area, and I'm asking little kids in their niner-gear if they put it on by accident, and how to they feel about the 9ers getting a Superbowl by circumventing the cap in that '94 season. Yes, it ticks me off.

I agree with Scipio that it would have been an epic comeback in the NFCCG if we had been able to pull it off.

The Cowboys overcame the first-half turnovers fairly well, in my opinion.

Late in the second quarter, the Cowboys had cut San Fransisco's lead in half despite missing a FG. Unfortunately, they made some very questionable calls right before halftime, and allowed the 49ers to extend their lead to 17 points.

Lets put it this way, I watched this game with two high school friends. One was (and still is) a diehard Cowboys fan, and the other was a Cowboys hating Raiders fan. My friend the Raider fan admitted that we got robbed harsh by the refs at the end of that game.

We did get robbed. What in the hell was that old man looking at when he looked right at Deion grabbing Irvin's arms? Was he going blind at that moment?

If you want to be really frustrated, click this link. It includes the box score from the game. The Cowboys dominated the Niners in virtually every statistical category except the most important one: the final score.

None of them were good, of course, but 1981 was worse for me too. It was a bad game that kept on giving....

We (as fans) had to relive that loss more often than the 1994 game (... how many times have we all seen tape of "The Catch?").

Had Landry beat Walsh in 1981, we'd have heard less of that "genius" stuff about Walsh (that always got on my nerves).

It does me. That was the first game where I rooted hard for the Cowboys and became a real fan. All my friends at school sported Cowboys gear prior to that but I really wasn't that interested in football. It's just crazy how things unfolded. Deion grabbing Irvin. The non call. Swtizer bumping the referee when we were driving. Losing out on winning 3 straight. Ugh. It still bugs me. I think we could have won 5 or 6 straight without Jones' ego.

Actually, that game haunts me. I really does bother me. I would never forget it and i think in some small way it changed the course of my life. Damn, refs........ and im serious, why did they pic that flag up....

Many disagree with me but JIMMY never lets that first quarter go the way it did. No way.

He's a good scapegoat I guess, but it wasnt his fault that three guys who hardly ever turned a ball over did it in the first quarter. The guy coaching also had nothing to do with our extreme injury situation then either. The game was also pathetically officiated, as it was extremely one sided towards SF.

Oh man does it. I was just thinking about that game yesterday. I remember sitting in the sports bar in utter disbelief that I was seeing 21-0 on the board. It seemed impossible. I was sick as a dog (didn't know I had mono yet) and my girlfriend of 3 yrs just dumped me. So, all in all, it was pretty fitting.

The playoff loss to the panthers 2 yrs later still grates me too. We had just crushed the Vikings and we seemed destined to continue the run. Little did I know that was the last freaking playoff win I was gonna see!!!! December 28, 1996.....what's today's date?

That Panthers game was no fun either. We should have won that game. Too many injuries to Michael and Deion, left us with Billy Davis at WR and some guy called Frazier at CB. Still, we could have won it. :(

Only thing that bothered me was the early turnovers that put Dallas deep in a hole. I don't look to blame refs even when I disagree with a call. Had Dallas not put themselves in a hole early we would have had a better chance of winning.

Only if I rewatch the game. In some weird way, it seems to add to the mystique of that era to me. An era where two of the best teams ever fielded played three straight times in what was officially labeled the NFC championship, but unofficially the real superbowl.

I hated the 49ers (still do), but that was a talented group that we took two of three from. I was proud of how hard Dallas played through all four quarters when they could have folded like our team did at the end of last season.

Note the irate fan in the upper left.

I cannot have a favorite Cowboy loss. Thats just me.

A testament to the team's resilience? To me, we were THAT good that we could have won the game. Spotting them 21 points was a joke. We should have won easily. We were unprepared.

I agree. A lot of people like to talk about how Aikman was courageous with the comeback, but it was his miscues that contributed to the 21 point hole. It is nice they didn't get blow out, but the fact still remains we did dig our own grave.

Interference or not, we didn't play well enough to get the job done, much less deserve the three-peat.

I don't think Lance Frazier was on the team that year, was he?

Yeah, those days are long gone. The Bills were pretty good during that era also, even if they were inferior to the NFC teams. SF really got a reprieve for their "dynasty" in 1994. They were the team on the 80s on the decline, on their second QB, while we were still in our prime. We could have won a few more, if Jerry and Jimmy didn't blow up something special. :(

The 1994 lost doesn't bother me that bad anymore, its been 15 years, most recent loses seem to stay with me more, like the Eagles game last year and that game the deadskins came back and beat us with those long passes to S. Moss.

I am not so sure that Jerry and Jimmy completely busted up the gang, but the timing sure didn't help. Johnson left, and we started getting picked apart in free agency. Losing people like Ken Norton and even Alvin Harper didn't help us very much, even though we won the following year without either player. Eventually by 1996, our depth was already showing serious deficiencies because of poor drafting. I doubt the dynasty would have continued even if we had better luck. Losing Johnson and Jones reaction by restructuring everything including the scouting department set the franchise into a tailspin. What is sad is that it didn't seem that way at the time because we still had residual talent that we lived off of for a few years.
