Does the Giants' 38 point loss to the Panthers invalidate our win over them?

Just asking, because you know someone asked if the Chiefs victory over the Eagles validated our loss to them the other day.
It perfectly reasonable to look at the performance of a team you just played the few weeks prior to and after to "better understand" the game(win or loss) that you just played against them.

So yes, the fact that the Giants have yet to win and looked bad in the two games after ours, is not good for us. It evidence that we're not as good as we would like to think we are.

And yes, the KC performance's "value" for lack of a better word is increased with them getting to 3-0.

It all matters when you're trying to interpret what a team is. I mean what else do you really have other than the team's body of work.

Well then, we are 2-1 with wins over an 0-3 team that just got spanked 38-0 by the lowly Panthers and the 1-2 Rams who are obviously not so great. Our loss is against a currently undefeated team. What does this say, if anything about where we are? It seems hard to tell anything about us at the moment other than that we beat the bad teams we played and lost to the good team.

no, when the giants /cowboys play, its a whole other game, stats, records, people talking crap, mean nothing about it. Just flat out different.

It's a reasonable question. I answered in that thread that in a young season, it's all about added information in the context of prediction, rather than validation. We don't know much about most teams so these results help fill in the gaps. No, KC's victory over Philadelphia didn't validate our loss but it did, everything else equal, increase our expected number of victories. The reverse would obviously be true of NYG's crushing defeat.

Now we're starting to enter the stage of the season where we do know a fair amount about other teams so there are diminishing returns on this type of thing but, yes, in the first few games of any NFL season, especially in the parity age, these kinds of wins and losses tell us something important.

It's unfortunate that the poster who posted the original thread ('the original original poster'?) used the word 'validate'. It caused a lot of people to miss what was a pretty good point.

Why should our win against the Giants be invalidated? Giants hate us. They played us as though it was their superbowl. They want nothing but totally beat us even though it means having a 1-15 record.

It can if you want it to, but I'm going to still count it as a victory!

The only thing that's been validated is the Cowboys have yet to beat a "good" team. We'll find out where the Cowboys are vs Denver in a couple of weeks.
