Does the Mingo trade say anything about the development of Tolbert?

oh, ok. thanks for the info....then next year is his last year...he is not getting a new contract unless its a minimum....
No problem. It would be nice to have a 5th year option on all picks. He might earn a new deal if he somehow breaks out next season? Although that seems unlikely since he hasn’t done anything to move up the depth chart. Gotta at least be the #2 to put up anything respectable.

Even with a backup QB a guy can still be expected to run crisp on time routes, beat his man, and put good tape out there. I get he deserves some time, but when I watch his snaps I see very little that he does well. He uses his size very well on short outside and comeback routes which could be something to build on, but he needs to add a lot more to his game to ever be considered more than depth for a team. He seems lost in the middle of the field, and not comfortable getting up field. He doesnt look close to being an NFL starter to me right now. Are you seeing anything different?
Not entirely. Also consider, he came from what is likely one of if not the worst staffs in the league. Worse than the Cowboys.

He just needs a full off season in what I hope will be a new system. QB camps, mini camps, training camp, preseason. He's only 23.

Just like people are singing the praise of Schoon now, I expect we will see a different Mingo next September.

The Mingo trade means one thing and one thing only: Jerruh is an old, senile, easily bamboozled buffoon of a GM.

Agree with a lot of what you're saying, but it comes back to the idea that the draft is a lower probability event than people realize. There are different ways to look at what a successful pick is, but by most measure even the 1st round of the draft only sees about a 50% hit rate, and most players will not receive 2nd contracts form the team that drafted them. By the time you get to the 3rd round the average draft will only see 1-3 players make a pro bowl their entire career.

The issue I think the Cowboys have is they are over dependent upon hitting in the draft. If you come away from a draft with a quality starter an a couple rotational/depth guys you had a pretty average draft.
OK, but I'm not interested in comparing our drafting to teams who suck.

Besides Mahomes, why is KC good? Chris Jones, Kelce, Derrick Nnadi, Creed Humphrey, Pacheco, Karlaftis.

Now that is good drafting. And, BTW, all of those guys were available to us. We took Escobar over Kelce, think about that!!!! We took Kelvin Joseph over Creed Humphrey!!!

When analyzing whether a team is drafting well, you don't just look at the hits, you look at the misses, and even moreso who you pass up. And the biggie, analyzing your losses and fixing the reasons you lost. And that is what we are terrible at.

Bolded: Which is why you must keep drafting consistently well.

The pro bowl is a very poor judge of drafting well.

Or it could mean the Cowboys traded a 4th for a player on a rookie deal they had a 2nd round grade on that could replace Cooks for much cheaper next year.

They had a first roind grade on Mazi Smith.

4th rd pick for Lance
4th rd pick for Dingo
1st rd pick for Lazi Smith

You're right. They are KILLING it....and their record and future outlook speaks for itself

Tolbert was our 3rd round pick a few years ago. I'm assuming they feel he hasn't lived up to take over that #2 WR spot opposite of Lamb to help us in the passing game. Does the trade for Mingo say anything about Tolbert, or more about the depth we have in this WR room?? Please give your thoughts
It's funny how every year we have an embarrassment of riches at the WR position in Training Camp and then the season starts and we've got nobody. Every year.

Taking him in the 2nd was just so weird. Mingo was listed as a 5th round talent.
If you look where he was projected to go, most draft sites had him as a second round talent. He tested great. His biggest fault was drops.

Its really more of an indictment on our talent evaluators. A guy that couldn't get on the field on the worst team in the league was not worth a 4.

No they didn't.

No team has 26 players with 1st round grades.
Wow....I sure have learned a lot today.

And here I thought they wasted these picks on players that can't, like, play football good.

Come to find out, Dingo, Lazi Smith, and Lance were all great uses of draft picks! And also, we pick guys in the 1st round, that we don't think should be taken in the 1st round...but thats OK!.

Micah was right: We is a dam good football team. The scoreboard don't don't define whether we win or lose!!!

Are you in the war room with these teams?? You don't know what their boards look like
Since the beginning of the draft, owners and GM's have said exactly what I said. Most teams only have 17-18 players with first round grades each year. You think I just made what I posted?

I swear, if I said water is wet you wouldn't think that's true and I was just posting something just to be posting something.

That's just the fans falling for WR's who can get open against slugs and straightliners.

But thats the thing though if you compare Dallas to KC the drafting really is pretty even. Since Mahomes they have top picks of Xavier Worthy who is too early to judge but hasnt made an impact yet. FAU who barely has seen the field, Trent McDuffie who is a phenomenal player, Nick Bolton who is pretty average, CEH has been a bust, Mecole Hardman who hasnt made a major impact, and Breeland Sparks who I believe is out of the league. Their hitting on guys at about the same rate that Dallas is.

Yes KC has hit on some great players after round 1, but so have the Cowboys in Overshown, Ferg, Bland, OSA, Diggs, Biadasz, Beebe etc.

No joke? The one I trust had him in the 5th. Guess mine's better!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Maybe don't go by sites that go by testing? The underwear olympics are simply a way for teams to get a feel for what a player is. Using these tests as a sole judgment tool is foolish.

His biggest fault is the inability to create separation. Add in thag he also lacks play speed, and the likelihood of success goes pretty far down. He also appears to lack burst off the line, quite worrisome.

It's pretty straightforward. They saw an opportunity to get a 2nd round talent for a 4th round pick, and we need wrs.
This is the failed Trey Lance logic all over again. You are correct that pre draft he was considered a 2nd round talent but once the games started over the past 2 years he was so inept that he got replaced in the starting lineup by an undrafted rookie.
