Before the draft started I went on record as saying that Dallas needed to fill 2-3 holes on defense to have a chance this season(I know that is a lot to ask of one draft).
Giving up a third for Lawrence was not smart IMO. And I thought we reached for a couple picks.
I think Dallas added some quality depth in the later rounds. But I ended up feeling pretty underwhelmed with this draft. We needed a couple players that could step in day one and contribute defensively. Dallas may have one with Lawrence. But I have some doubts about him.

I didn't think Dallas would be contenders this year and this draft didnt change my mind.

They solidified the OL and they desperately added possible impact player at DE. Does it put them in upper echelon? probably not. But you can see Marinelli starting to put his stamp on defensive spirit of team. This still will come down to three things: 1) Can Jason Garrett out-coach opposing coaches in December 2) Can Tony Romo justify his contract late in December and 3) will this defense solidify to point of giving them shot in playoffs.

What's it going to be then, eh?

We needed to hit a home run for this defense but basically ended up with a bunt single.

I fully appreciate and understand the value with Martin.

What we did after that was not focused.

We got blinders on regarding Lawrence.

We apparently mentally checked out in the fourth round.

Seems like there was some stability and logic applied in the seventh round of all places.

We needed a focused effort and unfortunately, we were all over the map.

I think Ben Gardner's availability makes a big difference. If he is a go for training camp and can get on the field/start the season, we can have a very good DLine rotation. I still worry about our linebackers, but if Carter can make the same progress from year 1 to 2 in the Cover two as he did year 1 to 2 in the 34, we are gonna be solid there. I think this defense will be middle of the pack next season. That means all this offense has to do is be just as good as it was last season. With the addition of Martin though, we will be better.

Anyone without optimism after this draft is someone who will piss in the wind and complain about the taste. It's drudgery and bafoonery and it's as baffling as it is annoying at this point.

Just impossible to know until they get to training camp.

I think the top and bottom of the draft will help us a lot.
I'm looking forward to the new Marnelli cult to unleash his magic blessings on the unwashed.

Actually I like the draft. We solidified a weakness with our oline. However, I think we could have done better on defense. Should have spent our 4th on Caraun Reid than on that linebacker. Other than that its okay and better than the usually.

Offense has potential to be elite depending on the health of Romo and the play-calling of the coaches. With that being said, I don't think even an elite offense has a chance to win a Super Bowl without a good defense. Look what happened to the Broncos in the Super Bowl. I don't see our defense being much better. I like the Lawrence pick, but he's a rookie and we don't know how good he'll be. We also don't know the health of veterans like Melton, Spencer and Lee. We also don't know if young potential busts will turn it around in Claiborne and Carter. We also have a few young players we know nothing about like Crawford, Bass, Hitchens, Wilcox, Matt Johnson. Overall, too many question marks on defense. Even if things work out perfectly for the defense, we'd still be a pretty mediocre defense.

I liked the draft, could it have been better? In the eyes of fans. ... yes

I think new starters this year including FA/injury from last year plus draft is..
Melton, Lawrence, McClain/Bishop, Crawford, Holloman with a great rotation of Bass, Gardner, Dixon, Mincey, Wilber, Dixon and some very good prospects.

If course one starter out of Crawford, McClain and Bishop.

Holloman is a LB just so I don't have to explain haha

If we don't get to the playoffs on offense alone, then something is seriously wrong with this team. This team is absolutely stacked on offense. We got the O-line. we got receivers. we got Murray, we got Witten... 3 of the last 4 1st rounders were spent on offense, specifically the o-line, and we also grabbed Williams and Escobar last year. Defense is not an excuse not to make the play-offs. You invest that much on one side of the ball and they better show up.

Absolutely agree. It was unlikely with the draft picks we held for us to put together a class that would vault us into title contention this season. People get all excited and think you can just plug in a bunch of holes with rookies and be OK, but that's not really the case. Look at the final 6 teams and find all the rookies getting significant snaps. There weren't many.

We have a ton of holes and as such, I'd imagine our rookies will see significant snaps. But outside of Martin, and to a lesser degree Lawrence, most of it will probably be spot duty. A rotational defensive linemen here, a backup safety there, a special teams guy here.

And that's what I hate about the current construction of our team. We're relying on a quarterback coming off what seems to be a fairly alarming surgery to lead an offense that will have to outscore everyone and overcome mediocre, at best, defensive play.

For all the "Romo friendly" talk, I don't think we've done a very good job to put together the caliber of team you'd anticipate to see built around a 34-year-old QB. We're likely looking at another year where 4,500 yards and a 30-TD to 10-INT ratio might only be good enough for a 7-9 or 8-8 year.

Agreed...............this offense is freaking stacked, we should be a top 3 offense in points scored easily.

Seriously, we got a probowl QB, a probowl RB, a probowl WR, a HOF TE, and 3 first round draft picks on the offensive line.

Add to that multiple complimentary players and backups drafted in the 2nd and 3rd rounds as well, such as Escobar and Williams.

We are talking some Madden **** here fellas!!!

Doesnt matter who we drafted. Season will still depend on Romo's back and Lee's glass body...

Like all NFL teams our season rides on Romo.

Any combination of Lee, Dez, Melton or Murray injuries will hurt us. Romo going down will kill us.
