Whose tried one recently, and what's your verdict?

We tried it last week actually. As far as those mainstream "across the USA" Pizza delivery joints go, it does indeed suck considerably less than it used to. Crust was okay, but that new Garlic stuff they put on it was shedding all over the place. They still don't put enough cheese on their pizza. Oh, their Wings weren't that bad either.

The pizza in the commercial still doesn't look worth trying. We been doing the Pizza Hut $10 deal with any size and any toppings. Been pretty pleased.

Better cheese, same paper crust, but w/ some garlicy flavor sprinkled on.

Ill rate it a 7, Rashida Jones. W/ any NJ pizzeria being a Jessica Alba, and frozen pizza Margaret Cho

We had Pizza Hut last weekend and it was sucky. I'd take Domino's every day of the week over them.

Papa John's takes them both, though. :D

Dominos sucks so bad when the wife asks if I want one from there I tell her she can order one and I will just put a frozen pizza in the oven.

Now I have not tried one since the change over but they really sucked.

Pizza hut is nowhere near as bad as Dominos IMO but to be fair I have not gotten a pizza from there in a couple of years so maybe it has changed.

I do know one thing about Pizza hut that used to suck was if you called in an order and went to pick it up (they don't deliver around here) the dough would never be all the way done. The outer crust would be but the area where the sauce goes the dough would never be all the way done.
Now if you ate there the dough was done, just not if you called in for a pick up.
They would rush those take out pizza's through

I used to like Pizza Hut and this one was definitely underdone.

I worked at Domino's way back in the day (almost 20 years ago!) and really never minded the pizza. I guess it also makes a difference when you are making one for yourself.

The other thing that most people who have never worked in a pizza place don't realize is that the age of the dough can completely change the flavor of the pizza.

Domino's uses fresh dough delivered weekly. Most of the time you need to let the dough rise for a few days. If dough hasn't risen enough, it's very bland. If dough is too old (blown dough) it is sour and tastes pretty crappy.

Pizza really can vary because of that from store to store or even night to night if you have someone that doesn't manage the ordering well.

When I worked fast food my coworkers would ask me how I could eat it all the time. I said it was easier when it's half off or free if the manager didn't catch me. :D

The soggy middle crust is likely due more to the steam accumulating inside the box and the way the crust reacts to sitting on the cardboard.

It's the same reason the crust on fried food is generaly soggy when you get it home.

It tastes like off-brand papa johns now.

I envy you people who have quality pizza restraunts in your neck of the woods.

We had one of the new Domino's ones... and it was awful, even compared to their previous pizza. Maybe this franchise didn't know how to make it right, or something, but it was completely bland. Tasteless crust and sauce, and the garlic crap on the crust just got everywhere and it felt like you had sand all over your hands. I ate one piece and gave up.

Our local Papa John's and Pizza Hut places do good work (even though the Pizza Hut delivery guy is our weird next-door-neighbor who pretends he doesn't know us when he delivers to our house), so those are our usual go-tos, but I understand how mileage may vary wherever you all are.

I tried one the other day outta curiosity. Better than it used to be but it still sucked. The crap they put all over the crust gets all over the place and it's greasy as hell.

Pizza Hut changed there crust a while back and made it sweet so I don't like it any longer either.

Pappa Murphys is the only way to go!

First Impressions: New Recipe Domino’s Pizza

January 03, 2010 By: Ryan Category: First Impressions, Pizza, Reviews
So I finally got around to trying the new recipe pizza over at Domino’s. I took advantage of the 2-medium 2-topping for $5.99 each deal and decided to celebrate the final Sunday of regular season football. Now that the fantasy football season is over, I can now spend a Sunday not worrying about how my team is doing and just sit back, relax and enjoy. Around where I live, there are plenty of non-major-chain pizza places to choose from. It’s extremely tempting to go with my favorite pizza at my favorite place, but it’s my duty for GrubGrade to find out what’s available to the masses. So with this in mind I invited my brother over for some new Domino’s pizza and a Sunday of football.
Dominos-Pizza-New-Recipe.jpg

Our two chosen pizzas were Pepperoni/Black Olives and Ham/Pineapple. Now before we get the rounds of boo’s on topping choices, just keep in mind that the real taste test here involves Domino’s “new recipe” which involves cheese, sauce and crust. As far as I know, there hasn’t been an upgrade of quality of toppings. This seems a little odd to me. You are trying to reinvent your company and pizza taste and your toppings stay just the same as always? This was on my mind before I took a bite so let’s see how the grubbing experience actually turned out. The cheese, sauce and crust are front and center and ready to be judged.
Dominos-New-Pizza.jpg

Cheese:
  • The Upgrade: Shredded 100% real mozzarella and flavored with a hint of provolone
  • My Thoughts: Flavor-wise, I didn’t get a hint of any change. The thickness of the cheese seems to be upped somewhat but that’s about where any changes end. Provolone is such a mild tasting cheese that I’m not really surprised about not picking up on it. The other flavors (especially the crust) dominated each slice so the cheese upgrade was lost.
New-Dominos-Pizza-Cheese.jpg
The Cheese...

Sauce:
  • The Upgrade: Sweeter and bolder with herbs and red pepper
  • My Thoughts: I didn’t notice the sauce having any “sweeter” qualities. I consider a sweeter pizza sauce something found in a Ledo pizza…and the Domino’s version lacked any sweetness. I did, however, notice a more robust flavor from the sauce which stood out more than the old Domino’s. Bolder is an acceptable term for this sauce versus the old sauce. I think this “bolder” sauce actually takes the sauce to the opposite of sweet. In the end though, nothing too groundbreaking but a noticeable improvement.
New-Dominos-Pizza-Sauce.jpg
The Sauce...

The Crust:
  • The Upgrade: A garlic seasoned crust with parsley baked in
  • My Thoughts: I ordered the pizza with the hand-tossed crust. No I don’t think it “tastes like cardboard”. Honestly, I never really had that impression with the old recipe. The crust seemed a tad thicker and greasier than what I’m used to from the old version. The most overwhelming quality I noticed was how garlicky the crust was. You can smell the garlic when you open the pizza box. It really took over the entire pizza with a garlic butter quality. The crust seemed identical to the Domino’s breadsticks which are “Baked to a golden brown and sprinkled with a flavorful blend of garlic, Romano cheese and parsley.” There was too much garlic and parmesan seasoning which you will notice coating your fingers when you touch it.

The Crust...

So overall, I’ve got to say the new pizza recipe at Domino’s worked out just OK. It’s a slight improvement from the old but I don’t see it changing my opinion in the BIG 3. I put Papa John’s #1, Domino’s #2 and Pizza Hut #3 before this taste-test and it remains the same now. Keep in mind this is just my personal preference of the major chains. It’s good to see Domino’s making the effort to improve their quality some but I wasn’t blown away. Maybe going all the way and upgrading the toppings (as I mentioned before) would change my mind. One thing is for sure though, garlic dominates this pizza. If you’ve tried the new Domino’s pizza recipe, what do you think?

That seems to be the common complaint thus far.
