This is exactly who we need right now and there is a big chance (since the Chargers arent going to sign him back) that's Edwards is going to follow Phillips to the big D.

This has teeth. I can remember Edwards mentioning that if Phillips left, he would leave also.

It's a pretty easy prediction to think that he will end up hear.

I think you're thinking of Shaun Phillips. Edwards is an inside player, a very intelligent pro's pro, and wouldn't cost anything if they cut him.

no need for Edwards...we have alot of LB's who can play, and we finally have a coach who can get the most ut of them

Ware isnt the only LB who is gonna benefit from having Phillips here

Oh sorry, I should clarify. I want Carp inside in place of Bradie (see sig for "details").

If he's cut though and doesnt cost anything then sure... bring him over.

He would not be high, and at least, would make a very solid back-up at ILB.

Are there any other Chargers defenders that are Free Agents?

Do we bring Flutie back to back-up Romo? A joke......mostly. He could probably still play.

Interesting suggestion. For whatever reason, Edwards fell out of favor with the GM in San Diego and he was almost traded last year. His numbers were definitely down last year and he's clearly on the downside of his career.

Who would he replace? Our two inside linebackers, if the season started today, would be Bradie James and Bobby Carpenter. Would we really want to bump one of those guys?

He could be a back-up at this point. He would help make the tansition easier with his knowledge of Phillips style 3-4, and give us insurance against Bradie James.

Akin Ayodele would have something to say about that...

Umm really?

Even Bluedemon or FF knew that Bradie James sucked and doesnt deserve to start unless he earns it in the off season.

Chargers linebacker Donnie Edwards, a Chula Vista native, will be moving on – if not real soon then at least sooner than he would like.
General Manager A.J. Smith verified when asked yesterday that he has notified the rest of the NFL (except AFC West foes) that Edwards is available for trade.

Donnie Edwards
Smith would not confirm what might pry Edwards away, but it is a good bet a first-day draft pick would accomplish it.
“If it's not attractive, nothing will be done,” Smith said. “If it is, decisions will be made.”
At the very minimum, his being shopped appears to be confirmation Edwards will not be getting the long-term contract he desires in San Diego and will be let go after this season. He is in the final year of the $18.75 million pact he signed when he came to the Chargers as a free agent in 2002.
Edwards, the Chargers' leading tackler each of his four seasons here, has angled for a raise each of the past three years. He and Smith have disagreed as to his worthiness for a lucrative extension.
Only Miami's Zach Thomas has more tackles than Edwards over the past seven seasons, but it is debatable what Edwards would bring in trade in that the cap hit to a team that signed him would be $3.55 million.
After spending his first six seasons in Kansas City, Edwards reunited with head coach Marty Schottenheimer in San Diego in '02. While starting every game since, he has averaged 149 tackles a season. He also has 14 interceptions as a Charger, twice leading the team.

However, he is entering his 11th season and just turned 33. And while his numbers are always good, he is seen as more of an auxiliary linebacker.

Edwards has said in the past he wants to stay here and play another four years or so. He did not return phone messages yesterday.
These were some of his thoughts this past season on the lack of a satisfactory contract: “I was highly upset, because I think both parties knew where it stood – my production, how much I'm being compensated and where I rank in the league . . . I do everything right. I just want to be compensated.”

And this...

Donnie Edwards is expected to be released after the season. San Diego spent the better part of training camp trying to deal Edwards, who wanted a new contract. He's performed fairly well this season, and teams like Kansas City, both New York teams, and New England could show interest in him. (Jan. 12, 2007- 10:04 AM EST - Source: Kansas City Star)

You get it. At least someone does. The changes aren't complete yet. Wade will bring in 2-3 of "his guys" and our defense will be very thankful he did.

There may be a chance that Kevin Burnett could be our Donnie Edwards ILB. I believe they are both about the same size. Though I hope Burnett can get his weight back up close to 250.

I believe Burnett is bigger, Donnie is something like 225 or 228, but I agree, Burnett could be our D's version of Edwards, except for the fact that he's raw, I think Phillips would like to have Donnie's experience on the team

Two words in form of a name (Adalius Thomas) or (Dwight Feeney). I believe either these two on the other side of Demarcus Ware as a pressure player can really be a bigger upgrade than Ellis. I believe Dwight Feeney has more speed and can enhance his coverage skills as a defensive player. Adalius Thomas on the other hand actually have experience and is a dominant pass-rusher. He's just like Dwight Feeney, versitle.

Those two will never be available.

He'd be intriguing as a backup/mentor to our young guys. And it'd work for him since we play on field turf or w/e and he's allergic to grass.
