Don't look now but Ellis has 8.5 sacks already.

No coincidence our d started playing better when he got back in the lineup. What is going to happen next year? I assume it is a good thing we drafted Spencer. We had to hedge against Ellis not being able to come back. I also believe that the improved play of our DT's is helping the DE's greatly.

I don't think he will this time though. Part of it is him, part of it is the scheme.

It is easy to fade playing every defensive snap as an undersized DE facing double teams and being asked to be the anchor versus the run.

We need to actually spell Ware for the same reason.
That whole rotating DL scheme works and wear and tear is why.

With Spencer here these guys could all conceivably play about 70% of the snaps with all 3 of them in on nickel and dime situations.

Yesterday one of those Ellis sacks came right after he had been given a series off. He bull rushed the RT with a pure strength move then made a 1 arm sack something hard to do when you aren't fresh.

The reason he is not worn down is very simple..... He's playing LB and not DE. At LB he gets to blitz, then drop back in coverage not taking a pounding. As a DE he was been pounded on all game by RTs,TEs and FBs, then sometimes RGs. That was a brilliant move by BP to see that Ellis could play LB.....

If not for Ellis injury last season he would have had Double digit sacks and our Defense would of been better at the end of the year,, because as soon as Ellis got hurt or D went into shambles.....

Him and Ware are playing out of their minds, it's awesome to watch... When Tank Johnson "rounds into form" watch out, the pass rush will be crazy!!

That's amazing that he's having such a good year when he didn't have a training camp, missed games and came back from an achilles injury of all things...very impressive!

Although Brett Farve will run away with the comeback player of the year award, Greg Ellis deserves some considerstion.

and part of it is him not having to go head-up on OTs every snap

in no way should Brett win the comeback award, he was healthy all last year and didn't have a terrible season

Yes, The Phillips 3-4 is working for Ellis big....

He has a knack for barreling into the backfield.

How ironic that the year he was possibly going to retire, he may finally get double digit sacks for the first time.

My props to that peep by the name of Ellis.

I think it's a tribute to him to
1. Come back from that injury and
2 Quit that girly-girl pout and rejoin the team as a force to be reckoned with.

I think it would be great for him to get double-digit sacks and help the team.
He and Spencer could be a great one-two punch this year and make teams work to defend their QB and runners.

Having said that: Who all thinks he will be back next year?
Remember, it would have to be mutal, both Jerra and Ellis.

As far as long-range, I don't think he will.
Like other aging stars he will opt to seek his fortune elsewhere. Somewhere with a team that needs a quick fix or interim DE or LB.

So, a toast to the past (Ellis) and one to the future (Spencer) and god bless us every one!

All those people who bashed him always pointed out that he's played all these years and never got double-digit sacks... And now he's going to do that playing less than a full season at age 32. Pretty cool.

Good coaching means a lot. :)

It more likely has to do with having Ware on the other side.

The Jets game shows this to a key.

Ware was doubled and chipped all game while Ellis had nothing but 1 on 1 match ups.

told ya so............let the record show, that i have been one of the few who have consistently backed and defended Ellis.

I knew he would have a very good year once he came back. I didn't expect him to be this good, cause of the injury, but I still expected him to have a very positive impact on our defense.

Ellis has been one of my favorite players since we drafted him.
