What they're really doing is defending their own opinions.

Folks make bold declarations about players - good or bad - then defend those statements no matter what happens in the future. There's some weird sense of pride involved. Rather than allowing your opinion to change based on new evidence, attempt to defend the original view to the bitter end!

Yep, I always figured it was best to admit I was wrong at the time instead of getting much more wronger later. Marriage teaches this.
