Dos Equis Man... The Most Interesting Pitchmen in the World

OK, I'll go in order:
To me, most of these boiled down to you either just not liking it or not getting it. Not really an analysis, but rather something like this:

"They did this, and I didn't like it. Then they did this, and I didn't like it. Then they did this, and I didn't like it."

There is some analysis, but it misses the point. For example, you point out that the "vicarious" line is an oxymoron. Well, yeah, it's ironic humor. Ironic humor often includes oxymorons.

you don't get the point of his diatribe

it's the clinching statement, I guess 2nd most clinching statement, which is a weak, "well I'd rather not be drinking this stuff, but when I do, it's Dos Equis", that he has a problem with

And I don't see anything wrong with that. Dos Equis isn't targeting the people that drink beer and only beer. Those people will drink Coors Lite or whatever American light beer it is they drink and will never change. They don't drink Scotch or wine or have cocktails. And they won't be switching to Dos Equis anytime soon. But they can target the people that will occasionally drink a beer but don't want to be seen carrying around a Bud Light bottle, because they think it's too uninteresting. Hence, the ad campaign.

It doesn't matter how they'd delievered the tag line there is nothing in those commercials that is going to suddenly make me thing...Oh i've got to try that beer.

Beer, as a whole, sucks. Completely.

If I'm going to drink it's going to be Whiskey or something of that nature. Beer just sucks.

I disagree with you there sir

That Danny is SOOOOO angry about the XX commercial really makes my day.

Stay annoyed and petty, my friend.

I gotta agree. You're not necessarily attacking the structure or makeup of the commercial, you just didn't like it, which is acceptable.

You're purposely mangling the tagline to prove your point as well, which is completely counterproductive if you are truly trying to analyze objectively. Like calling someone an idiot and then asking them to help you move.

You seem to be taking the thing far too literally. Maybe it's not as classy as a guy singing about McNuggets, but it's an interesting ad as far as ads go and the proof is in the pudding, it's been very successful for them already.

You're probably right.

The commercial annoys me, and to see an article lauding him really "grinds my gears." :p:

I will retire from this argument so as to not give Abe any more satisfaction. ;)

just my opinion but i think the ad would be rediculous if it claimed i only ever drink dos equis. he's well travelled and cultured so dos equis isn't always going to be readily available and he's going to find himself in situations where drinking beer isn't going to be appropriate, ie glass of wine with a meal at a high class restaurant, champagne at a celebration. therefore i don't always drink beer but when i do i prefer dos equis.
