Well I really think its interesting how much things can change, wasn't long ago everyone wanted Free gone, now that we have been successful everyone has a different view of Free. I hate to lose Free but I am very interested to see what we have in Parnell, he could accidently take the job, and imagine the future of this line with Parnell's youth without having to spend a high pick on an OT.

Anyone notice the pancake block on Murray's TD by Parnell?? Might wanna see it, I figure he will be just fine.

With a week of practice, run blocking probably won't be an issue for Parnell. I think that's his strength as a player. More worried about pass-pro. They will probably leave a TE in to chip at times just to make sure there's noone flying in untouched on Romo.

The quick summary:

He is big, quick and really strong with long arms but has very little experience because he was a basketball player in college. He had never played OT until he came to the Cowboys.

He played reasonably well in 2012 with 1 start at LT and 3 quarters plus overtime in another at LT. He then split time with Free at RT for the final 4 games that season. He was as good as Free.

In the 2013 training he was inline to compete with Free but got injured and missed all but 1 preseason game and couldn't challenge Free.

This past presesason he was reported to have problems, but in the actual preseason games he played reasonably well. He had many dominant plays in the run game and was generally good in Pass Pro, but will generally have 1 or 2 plays bad plays per game that are usually mental.

IMO, the only way a player like this can take the next step is to play in real games. Zack Martin played 52 games on OL in college; whereas Parnell played zero.

When he has had bad plays it usually on his first or second snap of the game. He has been better when he played OT than when he has played as a blocking TE.

I'm convinced that physically he is a better player than Free, but he has much much less experience and will likely make a couple of mistakes if he starts.

Thanks

Blessing in disguise.

Yep. I think this could be a blessing in disguise. I've always liked Free and I want us to try to retain him if we can. But people have been talking about spending another 1st rounder on a RT next year. I'd rather see that go to D-line or BPA. Now, if Parnell can play just as well as Free these next 4 weeks, then maybe we don't need to spend such a high pick on RT. Maybe we can draft a RT in the middle rounds and let him develop under Parnell for a few years. They don't all have to be 1st rounders (look at Leary). I'd feel more confident in letting a young RT develop than plugging a rookie in the starting lineup next year. We've been getting lucky on our O-line draft picks. Eventually, we're gonna draft a guy who doesn't pan out or who needs a few years to develop. Whether that means resigning Free for a few more years or seeing what Parnell can do, so be it.

Plus, I think we'll survive the next 3-4 weeks without Free. Here's who we play:

Giants
Commanders
Cardinals
Jaguars

Headline: I predict that Free never regains his starting job from Parnell.

Alternate Headline: Homer paints target on chest for crow-consumption threads.

I'm honestly with you. Parnell is a physical freak. And he's been a very good run blocker in the past, maybe better than Free. He's not as good a pass blocker as Free, but he can improve with some playing time.

From that now awesome, third and 20 play. I think Doug Free totally stonewalled his guy here, didn't even sniff Romo on this play. I know people think he will be easily replaced. But in my opinion, he has been having a pretty good season so far.

In terms of injuries, we've been lucky. We, too, can weather this. Losing the 5th best lineman is a lot better than losing Tyron Smith.

what I would like to see more than anything its for Parnell to walk away with the starting right tackle job and never look back.it would be great to get out starting right tackle without having to a draft pick, sign a high cost FA, or have to give Free a big contract.

Good point.

Free has actually been solid to good in run blocking, but has had problems with certain pass rushers.

Furthermore, he does seem to be improving weekly, and there is some chemistry there on the OL.

Parnell has great upside, but very little game experience -- we'll see how he responds now; may be a pleasant surprise.

looks like we will get to see Parnell get some quality playing time

And he, Parnell, got to finish the game is Seattle so that should help him for next week. I did not see a drop off after Free went out.

Parnell looked good run blocking but this week he might have to pass block against JPP. Trial by fire I guess.

Yea, in fact, when Murray ran it in for the go-ahead TD, he ran straight behind Parnell. In terms of pass-blocking, he's inexperienced, but the guy is an absolute bulldozer in run-blocking.

it cracks me up when people say things like "free is the 5th best OL, we can survive without him"....please, the guy has been playing very good football...I think that Parnell is decent enough, but if he were truly better, then her would have won the job at some point....I think we will see more running to the left side if free is out

Guys, we ALL knew it was coming. Settle down, and saddle up. Next man on deck.

We will see, teams will look for the week link in the OL and that will be the newbee, Parnell. Got faith that Big Bill Callahan will coach him up and have him ready......but really hope Free will be ready for the Eagles game....continuity on the OL is important

Agree, this is the first year he really looks like an OL rather than the basketball player he was in HS and College. For the long term it would be a huge boost to establish Parnell at RT just like you say, and also I'm not really down on Free but I don't think his level of play is that hard to replace either.

Pass blocking is not Doug Free's strong suit. If Parnell is worse than Free, this could get interesting fast. At least Romo has got some escapability back.

1st they report a sprain, now it's a fracture. I say more than 3-4 weeks.
