Doug Free Looked Really Bad

If Free is the biggest concern, then we are doing alright. Not many options on the roster, Parnell has shown nothing in years being here. Defensive front 7 is a disaster and getting worse.

I just don't much like a right tackle who can't dip his butt and drive...

Running the ball more will help. It's the preaseason and we are still passing on 3rd and 2. We already know what we can do passing on 3rd short. Why not try to see if we improved on short yardage running now?

And he played well last week so let's see what's going on. Balt ain't bad. Many of these guys are banged up. Two weeks of rest may help. We'll see.
I have not done a full review of Free from last week, but I noticed that he didn't look good on several plays.

I brought this up earlier, but I noticed that they went no huddle spread formations alot during this game. I think they were working on that aspect of the offense exclusively. We'll have to take a wait and see approach.

I haven't rewatched it nor will Iikely do so with a very critical eye. I agree Free looked bad a few times but I won't clarify bad.

You are right in that it looked like they were working on the spread formation and that's what I have a problem with. We know what we can do passing. They should try to find out if they have improved short yardage running with Zach Martin in the lineup.

I'm hoping we get away from passing from spread formation on short yardage situations this year. Especially in the redzone.

That is why we drafted Zach Martin, he is insurance. yes we would like to keep him at guard, but we could put another at guard and Martin at RT. I know our OLine is better but it will not be complete until we get the RT secured. Free played real well last season, but I just do not see him putting together consecutive seasons , stacking seasons on top of seasons, I see him as a off and on guy. I expect Free to struggle this season, I just hope we do not wait too long to replace him when the struggling starts.

He needs to play better, as does the rest of that OL. I drafted Dez and Romo last night for my fantasy league and I want to repeat as champ. Well, I want the thousand bucks for repeating as champ.

The sack he gave up was on an inside move and it was the only time he truly looked 'bad.'

I have rewatched the game. He was asked to single block Cameron Wake who is one of the better rushers in the league. Could we upgrade Free? Certainly but he was not missing a whole bunch of blocks as much as Wake beat his blocks.

Compare that that to the OP's boy Parnell over the last few games where he has missed multiple blocks multiple times a game. Now mind you Parnell was very good this game when he came in but I have come to the point with xwalker that I don't know if I can take what he says about Parnell and Free without a huge grain of salt.

I see the pair as steady for a season. It wouldn't hurt my feelings to see Parnell dropped and a replacement for Free, outright traded for. Then next season, a future replacement drafted.

The whole team must be tired of training camp and preseason, so it's going to happen that he and others get flat footed at times.

Do you think Free could start with any other team if he was cut right now?

I am all for going OT in round 1 next year. Give me the best OT available in the draft when it is our turn to pick. If we end up bad enough, maybe the OT from A&M will be available.

If someone is inconsistent then it may be hard to predict a pattern. I will say inconsistency is part of his problem and his technique is the biggest problem for it.

He's always been inconsistent for most of his career which is why he's only an average + RT. It's his hands mostly.

He sure does look in better shape than I have seen him in the past. He looks like he lost some weight?

I don't think he's inconsistent or wrong about Parnell. He says he is having some problems which is something he had in 2012. I have a different interpretation of it but everyone but him and the coaches are guessing as to why he does that. I haven't rewatched a game yet critically this year but he doesn't seem to be having a great deal more problems than most of the others including Smith. I saw Smith be lazy on a play and that's unusual for him.

He has all the tools although I can't say anything about his mental game. His problem in 2012 was just staying in his stance after the snap. It was costly. I wonder about his hearing, concentration, petit mal seizures, whatever. He does not look as engaged this year and I'd say he's regressed. I understand he is injured (L knee) which could explain it all or some of it. Maybe some of it is the old injury last year. I wish I knew.

To me unless it's injury then I wonder about their preparation for the game. We certainly do start slowly a lot.
