Could've made an attempt to get in FG range and put some points on the board. Instead they're taking a knee. Exactly something Garrett would do.

Yes, situationally it’s different, but not philosophically. Pederson is railing on being conservative and going on 4th downs.

In reality, the specific situation Pederson is criticizing is what Garret did in Washington right before the half that resulted in a fumble recovery for 6. And Garrett was vilified for it.

I think a lot of coaches would have. The Patriots had just scored and the crowd was probably back in the game. Turnover prone Blake Bortles is your quarterback and you’re on your own 25. You can go into the half still ahead with the ball first in the second half, or you can try your luck.
I do think he should have at least tried to bust a draw or something, see if you can pick up a quick 15. The immediate kneel was lame.

Taking the knee before halftime was nothing... the fact that the Jags punted on 4th-and-inches just shy of midfield after forcing a huge turnover midway through the 4th & clinging to a 10 point lead when they had Fournette and a 6'6" quarterback.

To me, that was the moment that should have had Doug Pederson punching and kicking the flat screen TV.

They convert that and they almost certainly win the game... instead, they punt back to Tom Shady, 3rd & 18 happens and the rest is history.

I"m here now, actually. Because he's a good coach and our team wins a lot and has problems that extend beyond coaching that everybody wants to tip their big ol' cowboy hats to but never want to actually credit for losing games because it's so much more convenient to blame the QB or the coach.

What I'm wondering, though, is what happens when a coach decides he's going to try to *stop* the offense and hold them to negative yards on every play, and he gets mad at them if they don't. Then *that* guy plays Doug Pederson with this 'score on every play' philosophy. That would be one amazing game.

I bet the guy with the ST coordinator who wants to make every field goal ends up winning it.

And then that guy will write a book. And he'll want to outsell Doug Pederson's book, but he probably won't be able to because Pederson is such an aggressive coach he can't stand to lose even a book-selling competition. He's that good.

And that's why I believe in just two short years Pederson is one of the top HC's in the game. Love that mentality.

It's actually nothing new however, Mike Leach has been doing this for years. When you get the ball, no matter what the score or time, you try and score TD's.

Playing to win beats playing not to lose.
