Draft a nosetackle ?

It's as if Brent doesn't exist. What am I missing?

The fact that he's not proven and not the typical size that you want as a true NT.

Several of you posted what I attempted to articulate yesterday. A classic 3-4 defense needs a big, pocket collapsing NT. That player is currently not on the roster. Depending on who the new DC is, that guy may be here by next season.

He could be big enough at 315-320, but we don't know for sure. He's an unknown, so i'd still go get a true NT in the draft or FA.

So I missed a statement from VR saying that Brent is too small, they wasted a 7th round draft pick, and they're going to draft a bigger NT? OK.

You missed the one where they said he can definately play the position full time and he'll be starting there and playing every snap next season..

Gotta keep up. ;)

We had Ratliff playing NT only because of Wade Phillips' defense. Wade really runs a 43 front disguised as a 34, it's a 1 gap system. Depending on who the new DC is will ultimately decide where Rat plays next season. There's no way he can play NT in a true 2-Gap 34 system. Honestly, our entire front 7 outside of D Ware isn't really designed for a true 3-4 so it will be interesting.

Exactly. It will all depend on the new DC's philosophy. Although not sure why you hate the 1 gap 3-4, Rat would not have excelled at the nose in a traditional 2 gapping 3-4. Wade's 3-4 had one or both of the DE's 2 gapping most times anyway. Its just logistics.

Yes you did. You should really pay more attention.

Yeah, I believe he weighed in at 320 on his pro day, I wasn't particularly impressed with his lift numbers but he could be stronger now as well.

He's listed as 315 already, and he may have room to grow and build strength under an NFL workout regimine. He's obviously still and unknown, but he did get some playing time this year, so apparently the team has at least a bit of a good feeling about him.

That was also under Wade's 3-4, which we know was built around a smaller NT.

Oh, no doubt he seemed to play well in the oppertunties he was given and the team should have a good feeling about him.

Now as a full time NT, im not so sure. He is too small at this point to be an every down NT in a traditional 34 system, so i would definately look to the mid rounds of the draft for a guy like Ellis or Taylor.. or if we could get a guy like Solairi in FA i would be happy as well. Brent could always move to DE or back up both the NT and DE positions. I'd just prefer to have another guy in here to compete with Brent.

Ratliff mention that when Brent played, he would ask the opposing players when he got back in the game what they thought of Josh and they would say he's a load

If Buddy Ryan is on board, I can see Cleveland trading us Ahtyba Rubin. They obviously want to go with a 4-3 and I'm not sure if he fits in that scheme. That would give us a d-line of

RDE- ???, Stephen Bowen
NT- Ahtyba Rubin, Josh Brent-Price
LDE- Jay Ratliff, Sean Lissimore

With 2 less teams running a 3-4 (cleveland and denver), I think we have a very good chance at landing either Adrian Clayborn, Cameron Heywood or Allen Bailey in round 2

I doubt they trade us a young guy in his 3rd year who should have made the Pro Bowl this season.. makes little sense. Those types of guys don't come around everyday.

If he doesn't fit the scheme, he doesn't fit the scheme. Haven't seen enough of him to know, but a lot of NTs, especially the shorter ones, just aren't the same in a 4-3. I'd give up a 4th for him, which I think is fair.

I understand the idea, i just think a guy like that is a force and with his high motor and work ethic, he'd be an asset in either scheme. Combine that with the fact that he's a young guy who played at a pro bowl level this year, and they already want to get rid of one DL in Rogers, and i just don't know if i could see them letting him go.

I'd love it if we could get the guy for a 4th though.. that'd be a steal.

What would you give up for him?

4th rounder, maybe a conditional pick next year (5th or lower).

Rubin is peaking and still under his rookie 6th round contract. He's not going anywhere.
