I give the Cowboys a B-.

9). Tyron Smith. This was the pick they had to make because Smith 'can' start at LT or RT day 1. This protects against a loss to Free which is unlikely but possible given free agency is so up in the air. Smith was most athletic player left on the board and potential the best overall athlete at 307 pounds of lean muscle. People believe he will be the best of the bunch in 3 years and at 23 he will just be reaching average draft age by then.

40). Bruce Carter. This was clearly a best available athlete pick. Carter is 242 pounds and runs faster than many CBs. I do not like taking day 1 backups or guys who need a red shirt year top 50 but alas we took the hit for the longer term pay off. Now I have to hope it pays off and by the time Carter is ready to go he has a defined role. I have seen reviews rave about him then suggest he is a nickel backer and special teams player.... I don't follow. A lot of players I liked better selected in the next 10 picks that had a chance to start day 1 imho. But I freely admit none were as athletic as Carter. If this was the Bears 4-4 Defense than Carter becomes a potential star player.

71). DeMarco Murray. Murray had injury issues but nothing long term. He was a work horse who really is a perfect 3rd down back and special teams guy. He has excellent hands. His selection tells me Dallas loses both Choice and Barber. Choice hurt himself with lack of desire and willingness on special teams. Barber simply ate too many hits and makes too much money. Expect Dallas to find a short yardage guy. I think Murray scores more TDs next year than Choice did in his career here... which is big talk at 8+. But Murray is a Felix type guy who has excellent hands and better vision with probably a bit less elusiveness (coming out of college).

I've got a B- trending towards a C with only one need addressed so far, OT.

drafting BPA >>>> drafting needs

Free agency comes after the draft, thats where needs get filled

Smith A
Carter Inc expect A
Murray D should have drafted either line

All 3 fill needs. We didn't trade up for any. Smith and Carter will start soon and Murray will play a ton of snaps. Hard to give that package anything less than a solid B to B+.

Still excited about tomorrow. Add in free agency (hopefully soon) and we upgraded the overall talent.

A solid B.

It would be much higher for me without the Murray pick.

Love the Smith and Carter selections.

I've never completely agreed with this, at least not in every draft. At some point, you've got to address your weakest links.

Smith is an A - Addressed need and a got a player who's potential appears to be through the roof.

Carter is a C - I understand the pick and even support it, but at the end of the day it's a guy coming off an ACL tear in the 2nd round in a draft the Cowboys needed to make out well in.

Murray is an F - A gadget back in the 3rd round when the team is coming apart the seams.

So this is a C draft thus far.

Does it?

Not filling needs trends it towards a C, the players selected gets the B-. I don't hate any of the players we've selected, I just don't love some of them for US.

B based on my personal desire for a CB.

Smith will start at OT.
If Carter starts at nickel LB this year and later becomes a starting ILB...
and if Murray becomes the full time 3rd down back and pass threat I think he will, then I'd give it an A.

B- is a pretty darn good draft

your reasoning sounds closer to fail...like a D

B- is a fine draft, not filling needs it going to be a problem. There are still picks to go though.

Given our draft positiion, C. Average.

After seeing the second and especially third round picks, I'm glad we didn't trade down from #9.

C and a F for those two picks?

Don't see that at all. Murray grade is up in the air but I think F is a bit much.

I would have to say a B until we selected Murray...that pick dropped it down. If Jones wanted to take Murray, he should have done so after...we picked up some more help on the OL.
