I give the Cowboys a B-.
9). Tyron Smith. This was the pick they had to make because Smith 'can' start at LT or RT day 1. This protects against a loss to Free which is unlikely but possible given free agency is so up in the air. Smith was most athletic player left on the board and potential the best overall athlete at 307 pounds of lean muscle. People believe he will be the best of the bunch in 3 years and at 23 he will just be reaching average draft age by then.
40). Bruce Carter. This was clearly a best available athlete pick. Carter is 242 pounds and runs faster than many CBs. I do not like taking day 1 backups or guys who need a red shirt year top 50 but alas we took the hit for the longer term pay off. Now I have to hope it pays off and by the time Carter is ready to go he has a defined role. I have seen reviews rave about him then suggest he is a nickel backer and special teams player.... I don't follow. A lot of players I liked better selected in the next 10 picks that had a chance to start day 1 imho. But I freely admit none were as athletic as Carter. If this was the Bears 4-4 Defense than Carter becomes a potential star player.
71). DeMarco Murray. Murray had injury issues but nothing long term. He was a work horse who really is a perfect 3rd down back and special teams guy. He has excellent hands. His selection tells me Dallas loses both Choice and Barber. Choice hurt himself with lack of desire and willingness on special teams. Barber simply ate too many hits and makes too much money. Expect Dallas to find a short yardage guy. I think Murray scores more TDs next year than Choice did in his career here... which is big talk at 8+. But Murray is a Felix type guy who has excellent hands and better vision with probably a bit less elusiveness (coming out of college).
