NFC East
B Dallas The Cowboys didn’t get their “war daddy” pass rusher, but they filled needs on the defensive side. They used their first three choices on defenders for the first time since 1983, ending up with three DLs and four DBs, including a possible steal in Xavier Woods.

C- NY Giants The Giants’ two biggest needs were OT and LB, and they didn’t draft an OT until the sixth and used none of their six picks on a LB. But they might have their QB of the future in Davis Webb.

C+ Philadelphia Derek Barnett has the potential to produce double-digit sacks annually. Sidney Jones, if he can return from an Achilles’ injury, and Donnel Pumphrey, if he can become the next Darren Sproles, could be steals.

B Washington The Commanders’ 28th-ranked defense is much improved with Jonathan Allen, Ryan Anderson and Fabian Moreau expected to be early contributors. Samaje Perine can help the offense’s 29th red-zone efficiency.

Winner: Dallas Cowboys

The Cowboys had one of the best drafts, locking up that on Saturday in the final rounds. The steal of the entire class could prove to be safety Xavier Woods, whom the Cowboys scooped up in the sixth round (191 overall). He was one of their 30 pre-draft visits, so to get him in the second-to-last round was remarkable. They also added Ryan Switzer, the best route-runner in the draft and a dynamic punt returner. Marquez White is a raw corner, but in Rod Marinelli’s system, he fits extremely well and could develop into a future starter. Dallas did well on Day 3.

The first three picks all had second-round grades, and the franchise ended up with five of the top 68 players on its board.
  • The Cowboys were discussing whether to take San Diego State running back Donnel Pumphrey or North Carolina receiver Ryan Switzer in the fourth round. Philadelphia then made a trade to jump one spot ahead of the Cowboys to take Pumphrey at No. 132.
  • Xavier Woods was under consideration in the fourth round when the team took Switzer. He was among the top 68 players on the Cowboys board and was far and away their highest-rated player remaining when he was selected at No. 191.
  • The Cowboys were poised to take Miami quarterback Brad Kaaya with their first seventh-round pick but Detroit took him late in the sixth round.

Kiper's great wisdom...

"Yes, Dallas needed an end after DeMarcus Lawrence underwhelmed last season and Randy Gregory was suspended for at least the 2017 season, but a premier pass-rusher made more sense. I don't think that's Charlton."

(we sure missed out on those DL premiere pass rushers sitting there at #28) :)
What's sad is someone pays him for that sage advice and wisdom.

Yeah Mel, the Cowboys probably would've been smart enough to take Garrett.Thomas or Barnett had they been there at 28. Is it just me or is Mel morphing into Grandpa Munster?

could have gotten the same production out of

Daeshon Hall [3rd ROUND TO THE PANTHERS]
Jordan Willis [3RD ROUND TO THE BENGALS]

Tyus Bowser [2ND ROUND TO THE RAVENS]

Tarell Basham [3RD ROUND TO THE COLTS]
DeMarcus Walker [2ND ROUND TO THE BRONCOS]
Derek Rivers 3RD ROUND TO THE PATRIOTS]

You're seriously claiming there were SIX guys as good as Charleton for a pass rushing 4/3 DE at #28 in this draft?

First of all, Willis and Bowser are OLB'ers, not DE's. Bowser at 6 foot 3, 247 and Willis at 6 foot 4, 255 are much smaller than Charleton who is 6 foot 6, 277.

I'm gonna go look and check and see how many of these guys were 4/3 DE's.

Charlton was unanimously viewed as a 1st round pick throughout the entire process, one of the few actually.

Hell, most mocked him off the board well before 28.

Now all of a sudden there were better options available... yet no one can seem to come with a name for a better pure 43 End that was on the board.
Right. And no one had TJ Watt as a first rounder before the combine. If you'd asked anyone precombine if it made since to pick Watt over Charlton, they'd have laughed it off.

Cowboys Needs:

Defensive line/edge rusher: The Cowboys have needed help here for years, ever since the departure of DeMarcus Ware. DE Taco Charlton

Cornerback: The Cowboys lost Brandon Carr and Morris Claiborne in free agency. They still have three corners who can play, in Orlando Scandrick, Nolan Carroll and Anthony Brown, but they need depth, and a possible upgrade. CB Chidobe Awuzie, CB Jourdan Lewis, CB Marquez White

Safety: Starter Barry Church and sometime-starter/reserve J.J. Wilcox both exited in free agency, leaving the Cowboys with Byron Jones and question marks. Jeff Heath is currently the other starter, but a high pick in the draft could become the starter at the position. S Xavier Woods

They are referring to after Seattle traded with ATL and moved back to 31. Once Taco went, they traded back again as Dallas selected the player they wanted.

I know what they're trying to refer to, but again if he was "their guy", they're not trading out of #26. The claim isn't supported by the facts.

Yeah it's funny he would say that now when he said this on an April 5th mock draft he did
i

31. Atlanta Falcons

Kiper: Taco Charlton, DE, Michigan | Watch highlights
Vic Beasley Jr. had 15.5 sacks last season, but no other Falcon had more than 4.5 (Adrian Clayborn). That's where Charlton comes in, and he can hold up against the run, too. He has very long arms, measuring at 34¼ inches.

Hahahahahaha.

What a clown.

They are if they think that the guy might still be there at 31. They may have taken a calculated risk thinking we might be going McKinley if he were there and then Charlton drops to them.

They needed help up front, so taking Michigan defensive end Taco Charlton makes sense, but I think there were better options at that point. I think they bounced back and got two good corners in the next two rounds in Colorado Buffaloes 's Chidobe Awuzie and Michigan's Jourdan Lewis , which help a position of need. Taking Ryan Switzer in the fourth round could mean Cole Beasley may be out next year when his contract is up.

Draft picks:
Taco Charlton (No. 28 overall), Chidobe Awuzie (No. 60 overall), Jourdan Lewis (No. 92 overall), Ryan Switzer (No. 133 overall), Xavier Woods (No. 191 overall), Marquez White (No. 216 overall), Joey Ivie (No. 228 overall), Noah Brown (No. 239 overall), Jordan Carrell (No. 246 overall)
Day 1 grade: A-
Day 2 grade: A
Day 3 grade: B
Overall grade: A-
The skinny: Dallas had a choice between Charlton and T.J. Watt. Either could have fit their bill, and the need was certainly there. I had Watt with a higher grade, but Charlton's length and agility are impressive. He'll be a very good player for Jerry Jones and Jason Garrett. The Cowboys found another corner/safety combo in Chidobe Awuzie, and got great value in doing so. They again helped the secondary with a tough-minded slot starter in Jourdan Lewis; this makes sense given the team's interest in trading Orlando Scandrick. Dallas picked up Cole Beasley 2.0 in Ryan Switzer.

Dallas Cowboys: B+

The first pick, DE Taco Charlton (No. 28 overall), was about finding a player to help fix the Cowboys’ need off the edge. The next four selections increased their overall team flexibility, both on offense and defense. CBs Chidobe Awuzie (No. 60) and Jourdan Lewis (No. 92) are scrappy defenders capable of holding their own outside or in the slot. (Using a pick on Lewis will come with scrutiny, because he’s awaiting a July trial on a domestic abuse allegation.) S Xavier Woods (No. 191) is another interchangeable piece, which will help take pressure off Byron Jones. WR Ryan Switzer (No. 133) can pair in the slot with Cole Beasley or handle return duties while playing behind the Cowboys’ proven receiver. A solid group, pending Lewis’s availability.

Dallas Cowboys

The Cowboys had huge holes to fill in the secondary and edge rusher in the 2017 NFL Draft and -- on paper, at least -- it appears that the club did a spectacular job of addressing them, patiently waiting for a toolsy edge rusher in Taco Charlton to slide down to them at No. 28 overall and adding two of the better cover corners in the draft in Chidobe Awuzie and Jourdan Lewis in the second and third rounds, respectively.

Dallas added playmakers at safety (Xavier Woods) and in the return game (Ryan Switzer) on Day 2, as well as a quality developmental receiver in Noah Brown late in the draft. Given the quality of the receivers Dallas will be facing in the NFC East (and now playing against a first-place schedule), it remains to be seen how well the young secondary will fare. Defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli is an accomplished teacher, however, and for the first time in years Dallas has the raw talent on defense to match that on the other side of the ball.

Dallas Cowboys

Analysis: The Cowboys simply had to address their pass rush and their depleted secondary. And they did so. First-round DE Taco Charlton should be able to help the Dallas defense get to opposing QBs. The Cowboys added cornerbacks in second-rounder Chidobe Awuzie and third-rounder Jourdan Lewis, and got a safety in sixth-rounder Xavier Woods. They’d better be ready to play. The Cowboys might need all of them at some point this season. Lewis has been charged with misdemeanor domestic violence and faces a trial scheduled for July. Grade: B-

Then he's not "their guy". Teams don't trade away from "their guy". They trade away from "a guy".

They knew exactly why Atlanta was trading up, for "their guy". A pass rusher. McKinley. If they truly wanted Charlton, they would have taken him at 26. Anything else is some attempt to talk him up after that fact.

Nice try, but that's got zero to do with calling out revisionist history for what it is.

Seattle was at 26. Dallas was at 28. If Charlton was "their guy", they get him. It's simple math. It's not hard.

Anything else is spin.

Then he wasn't "their guy". He was at best plan B, right? Teams don't trade away from "their guy".

I've got nothing against Charlton and I hope he beasts out and proves the team right and me wrong. I just don't need to hear attempts at revisionist history in an effort to prop things up and make them look better than they are.
