Dallas Cowboys: This could be a very productive rookie class – and may have to be after free agency’s defensive exodus. First-round DE Taco Charlton, second-round CB Chidobe Awuzie and third-round CB Jourdan Lewis – assuming legal issues are resolved in his favor – should all see extensive playing time if they don't start. Fourth-round WR Ryan Switzer gives QB Dak Prescott a second weapon in the slot along with Cole Beasley.

Grade: B

Yeah it's funny he would say that now when he said this on an April 5th mock draft he did
i

31. Atlanta Falcons

Kiper: Taco Charlton, DE, Michigan | Watch highlights
Vic Beasley Jr. had 15.5 sacks last season, but no other Falcon had more than 4.5 (Adrian Clayborn). That's where Charlton comes in, and he can hold up against the run, too. He has very long arms, measuring at 34¼ inches.

Exactly. Someone should create a site of:

"what they said yesterday" vs "what they said today".

Lots of egg on face for these guys... maybe then journalist, reporters and children mmentarers would be responsible with their words.

Then he wasn't "their guy". He was at best plan B, right? Teams don't trade away from "their guy".

I've got nothing against Charlton and I hope he beasts out and proves the team right and me wrong. I just don't need to hear attempts at revisionist history in an effort to prop things up and make them look better than they are.
I was just joking around. These "reports" come out every year after the draft and should be taken with a grain of salt. Just like the Pats we're gonna take Jaylon at the end of the 2nd last year. I wasn't bouncing off the walls happy with the Taco pick but I trust the FO and will take a wait and see approach on how he does. Overall I'm happy with how they drafted this year with filling areas of need.

I don't think Taco was their #1 but took that tweet to mean if Taco fell to 31 they would have taken him. Maybe he was plan C, D or E. Saying he was "their guy" implies it was their top choice and maybe the author should have provided more insight or not used that term. Without further explanation we don't know the context in what "their guy" really means.

They needed help up front, so taking Michigan defensive end Taco Charlton makes sense, but I think there were better options at that point. I think they bounced back and got two good corners in the next two rounds in Colorado Buffaloes 's Chidobe Awuzie and Michigan's Jourdan Lewis , which help a position of need. Taking Ryan Switzer in the fourth round could mean Cole Beasley may be out next year when his contract is up.

Dallas Cowboys
Draft picks:
Taco Charlton (No. 28 overall), Chidobe Awuzie (No. 60 overall), Jourdan Lewis (No. 92 overall), Ryan Switzer (No. 133 overall), Xavier Woods (No. 191 overall), Marquez White (No. 216 overall), Joey Ivie (No. 228 overall), Noah Brown (No. 239 overall), Jordan Carrell (No. 246 overall)
Day 1 grade: A-
Day 2 grade: A
Day 3 grade: B
Overall grade: A-
The skinny: Dallas had a choice between Charlton and T.J. Watt. Either could have fit their bill, and the need was certainly there. I had Watt with a higher grade, but Charlton's length and agility are impressive. He'll be a very good player for Jerry Jones and Jason Garrett. The Cowboys found another corner/safety combo in Chidobe Awuzie, and got great value in doing so. They again helped the secondary with a tough-minded slot starter in Jourdan Lewis; this makes sense given the team's interest in trading Orlando Scandrick. Dallas picked up Cole Beasley 2.0 in Ryan Switzer.

Dallas Cowboys: B+

The first pick, DE Taco Charlton (No. 28 overall), was about finding a player to help fix the Cowboys’ need off the edge. The next four selections increased their overall team flexibility, both on offense and defense. CBs Chidobe Awuzie (No. 60) and Jourdan Lewis (No. 92) are scrappy defenders capable of holding their own outside or in the slot. (Using a pick on Lewis will come with scrutiny, because he’s awaiting a July trial on a domestic abuse allegation.) S Xavier Woods (No. 191) is another interchangeable piece, which will help take pressure off Byron Jones. WR Ryan Switzer (No. 133) can pair in the slot with Cole Beasley or handle return duties while playing behind the Cowboys’ proven receiver. A solid group, pending Lewis’s availability.

Dallas Cowboys

The Cowboys had huge holes to fill in the secondary and edge rusher in the 2017 NFL Draft and -- on paper, at least -- it appears that the club did a spectacular job of addressing them, patiently waiting for a toolsy edge rusher in Taco Charlton to slide down to them at No. 28 overall and adding two of the better cover corners in the draft in Chidobe Awuzie and Jourdan Lewis in the second and third rounds, respectively.

Dallas added playmakers at safety (Xavier Woods) and in the return game (Ryan Switzer) on Day 2, as well as a quality developmental receiver in Noah Brown late in the draft. Given the quality of the receivers Dallas will be facing in the NFC East (and now playing against a first-place schedule), it remains to be seen how well the young secondary will fare. Defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli is an accomplished teacher, however, and for the first time in years Dallas has the raw talent on defense to match that on the other side of the ball.

Dallas Cowboys

Analysis: The Cowboys simply had to address their pass rush and their depleted secondary. And they did so. First-round DE Taco Charlton should be able to help the Dallas defense get to opposing QBs. The Cowboys added cornerbacks in second-rounder Chidobe Awuzie and third-rounder Jourdan Lewis, and got a safety in sixth-rounder Xavier Woods. They’d better be ready to play. The Cowboys might need all of them at some point this season. Lewis has been charged with misdemeanor domestic violence and faces a trial scheduled for July. Grade: B-

This fairly sums up my impression of the Cowboys draft. I wouldn't go as far as to say spectacular, though, pulling Woods in the 6th was a "Wow" moment, overall the Cowboys were hindered by draft position. But given where they were picking, any grade less than B+ is clearly biased. It looks as though, once again, the Cowboys have found 4 starting caliber players, which before last year was unheard of. Add to that Jaylon Smith and Charles Tapper from last year and I'd say Cowboys fans are going to see a much hungrier and physical defense this year. To be able to rebuild within the confines of one offseason is spectacular. I, for one, cannot wait to see the finished product.

I really like our draft class, we got some very good talent..................Will McClay is going to want a raise.;)

Will McClay deserves a raise...perhaps they should just take money from the under-achieving head coach and sprinkle it into McClay's 26 pays per year

Kiper's great wisdom...

"Yes, Dallas needed an end after DeMarcus Lawrence underwhelmed last season and Randy Gregory was suspended for at least the 2017 season, but a premier pass-rusher made more sense. I don't think that's Charlton."

(we sure missed out on those DL premiere pass rushers sitting there at #28) :)
I suspect he was referring to Watt whose never put a hand on the ground and may be undersized for what the Cowboys want.

Nice try, but that's got zero to do with calling out revisionist history for what it is.

Seattle was at 26. Dallas was at 28. If Charlton was "their guy", they get him. It's simple math. It's not hard.

Anything else is spin.

Nothing nice about it. A reporter says Seattle would have taken Charlton at 31 and after we took him, they traded out. You take umbrage with the phrase "their guy".

So maybe after netting an extra picks, Charlton was going to be "their guy" at 31. Makes sense too considering they took McDowell. They were clearly looking for DL help.

The whole point being there were teams around us likely to take Charlton too. And that somehow seems to bother you.

This was a strange class from the Cowboys, who kicked things off by addressing their need for an edge defender, but going with more of a run-defending edge-setter in Michigan’s Taco Charlton. Then came a double-dip in the secondary with Colorado’s versatile Chidobe Awuzie and Michigan’s undersized Jourdan Lewis.

The Cowboys’ next three picks were great values: North Carolina slot receiver/return man Ryan Switzer, Louisiana Tech safety Xavier Woods and Florida State corner Marquez White. Taking three corners but no linebackers, no tight end in a deep class, and no true pass-rushing specialist on the edge is what weighs down this grade.

Grade: C+

The "whole point" is that they could have easily drafted him, at a pick before Dallas, and didn't. But you believe "some reporter" over what actually happened.

But yeah, I'm sure Seattle never expected that Dallas would draft a DE...

You're seriously claiming there were SIX guys as good as Charleton for a pass rushing 4/3 DE at #28 in this draft?

First of all, Willis and Bowser are OLB'ers, not DE's. Bowser at 6 foot 3, 247 and Willis at 6 foot 4, 255 are much smaller than Charleton who is 6 foot 6, 277.

I'm gonna go look and check and see how many of these guys were 4/3 DE's.

ok please do - tell me in three years which guy you would have picked - WHICH guy has the most sacks

A defensive end at Troy, Ware was considered a "tweener DE/OLB prospect" by most scouts.[4] He was supposed to be a perfect fit as rush linebacker in 3-4 defense prior the 2005 NFL Draft[5] and was projected to go early in the second round by Sports Illustrated.[

VON MILLER 6-3 HAS 72 SAC KS

This is why you can't put much stock in draft grades by media people who were never scouts or in the NFL in any capacity, as I assume this USA Today writer is.

Just because it was a 'deep' class at TE and LB meant Dallas should have taken some TE's and LB'ers? What Dallas needed was edge rushing and DB's, and it so happens they got the edge rusher #1 and then helped themselves to 4 DB's in a deep DB class. But because this writer thinks it's mandatory or something to take TE's and LB'ers too he downgrades our draft.

A lot of these guys didn't even play in 4/3 defenses with their hands down. We were looking for somebody to come off the other edge opposite Irving and [if he gets his act together] DLaw, and it looks like Marinelli wanted a big body for the DLine, and did not go the route of taking a smaller tweener and then trying to bulk him up while teaching to play with his hand in the dirt. His call.

and so Taco was the leading sack person in college in 2097 ?

well what ever floats your boat - but IMO we got a lesser player than G Ellis

I may be wrong

but let the big boy prove it

Isn't the whole point of this to show teams had interest in Charlton around Dallas' pick?

Why does that bother you so much. You kind of sound bitter over this actually, which is surprising. You tend to be more levelheaded than this.
