Had another good Skype session last night with a friend I grew up with who’s now a sportswriter in the Bay Area. Here’s some draft nuggets for you:

Looks like Goff #1, Wentz #2. They both have the same agent and Eagles pulled the trigger once they knew Wentz was there. This is baked and done.

San Diego is receiving a ton of calls. Will pick Tunsil if no deal, but felt that the pick would likely be moved. Giants are a darkhorse here.

Dallas is leaning towards Ramsey or Buckner. Bosa was in the mix, but can’t afford more character concerns with the stakes so high. The key with both: scheme versatility. Ramsey could play at corner or move inside and Buckner can move inside in passing situations or keep him outside and really coach him up on batting balls. Made specific mention that Dallas is much harder to get a read on this year than in recent memory.

Side note: character concerns are going to be bigger than ever this draft with leashes being so short. Don’t be shocked when substantial talent plummets.

San Francisco will not be taking a QB this year. Kelly came over specifically to see what he could get out of Kaep/Gabbert. The name he keeps hearing is that Elliott is who Kelly really covets. Brass wants to energize the market and feel Elliott could be that guy.

Thinks Lynch is going to the Saints and that teams will have to jump them to get him. Lynch is favored much more around the league than in mock draft circles.

As a second round surprise for Dallas, look for Noah Spence. Team would take the bait for his talent there, but refuses to burn #4 as that will set the franchise back eons.

So if the Cowboys took Ramsey at #4 and Noah Spence at #34 what is your feeling on the Defense is it much better or still needs tons of work ?

Looks like our pick has no trade value. Picks 1-3 have/could net a fortune with the two QBs and Tunsil on the board. I think the trading stops with us. Don't be surprised to see San Diego get a boat load of picks from Tennessee.

If Tunsil is the 3rd pick our trade value for our 4th pick does go up. Stanley's value rises for teams looking for a LT

Living in Oregon I've watched my share of Duck games...i like Buckner, but not crazy with him at #4. If we did take him my feeling is he has to play the 3T and that moves Crawford to LDE. Buckner is good at DE, but he is MUCH better when kicked inside. He can eat up most guards when you watch him, but at DE he is not special. How much does that improve us if he plays 3T and Crawford to LDE??? not sure. Both of them on the same side will be disruptive though.

I really think this year we will be forced to Blitz much more than in the past. We may have a very solid Dline that can stop the run and is OK at pass rushing, and the only way to get to the QB is cut Ro and Lee loose.

I was thinking that he said when the Cowboys talked to him it was about the 3tech,

I hope so if we do take him. I was just looking at the 40 and shuttle times and Crawford (4.86) was a little quicker then Buckner (5.05). It may not be the worst thing if we had Buckner, Thornton inside, and moved Crawford, Irving, and Jack Crawford to DE and see how that works out. We have...well at some point we will have...Lawrence, Gregory, and Benson at RDE. I'd also be down for adding Clark in the 2nd to have a Buckner, Clark, Thornton DT rotation...which would certainly free up DE's and LB's more. I'm not liking the DE's in this draft that much, but love the DT's.

Of the guys that have been linked to the Cowboys at 4 over the last month or so...Buckner is the last one I wanted.

I'm not on the Zeke at 4 bandwagon, but would prefer him at that spot than Buckner.

Yeah there are some really good 1 and 3 tech DTs in this draft.

There are some other DEs I like that are not 1st round guys....Judon and Blair are interesting but they are both smaller school guys.

Me too. Watching his tape, he looks slow, top heavy, plays with no leverage, is off his feet alot, and has no pass rush moves. Other than that, he's awesome.

Buckner does fit the mold of a one gap penetrator in our scheme not necessarily to create sacks, but backfield confusion. Not sure the rest of our line is strong enough to capitalize, but that'd be the logic behind the pick.

We have that guy already in David Irving

I've never thought Elliott was in play at 4. Always thought QB or defense at 4. I think Ramsey wont bust but wont be what they reallly want either, a play maker. Think Buckner has reasonable to chance to bust.

Buckner would be a bad pick, IMO. Oh well, hopefully it's not true and doesn't happen.

All these guys do. Bosa due to being a weirdo, Ramsey due to not having an actual position, Buckner because he's 6'7 but plays like he's 6'1, Elliot because he's a RB, Jack because he has one leg to run on

This is the worst top 5 I can remember. Seriously. Even the consensus #1 guy was suspended in his last year of college.

Totally agree...even though I put one toe on the Buckner wagon (simply because he is a good player), I do not think there is a guaranteed play-maker. Ramsey could be that player, but the hype that was on Claiborne tempers my excitement on him. Our best scenario is a trade down and pick up another 2nd or so. There are some really good players in the 15-60 range this year from DT's a few DE, CB, Safeties. I almost would rather get a few more picks in the second round area and grab a few players that could turn out to be studs.

This is actually the outcome I've been thinking will possibly happen for us. I know people don't think Spence will drop, but somebody always does, and there's a lot of DL talent in this draft. If not Spence, somebody good will be there for us at #34.
