I don't study the draft like you guys do, but I am starting to see a bit of a theme developing about possibly moving down from #19. Ther may not really be a good fit at #19 available in which i would have no problem with trading down.

Incidentally, there may be more value to trading back. For instance, if Vea were on the board he would probably be a good pick. Some would also say the linebacker from Georgia (Smith) would also be a good pick. One or both may be available when we pick at #19.

Value wise though would you rather just have Vea or Smith OR the guard (Hernandez??) late in the first and the linebacker from Oklahoma? If it was Vea I might say just Vea but I would definitely rather have the guard and the Oklahoma linebacker over Smith.

You could also play tht same game with one of the alternate 1Techs. Vea will almost certainly be gone by the end of the first but one of the top 3 or 4 1Tech may be available as late as the 3rd round.

What do you guys think about moving back in this particular draft? If we move back in the first I could see us ending up with 4 or maybe even 5 players in the first three rounds if we chose to go that direction with all of our draft picks.

Vander Esch.............. I’d like a trade down for OG Hernandez, a trade back up in round 2 for LB Vander Esch and either 1tech- Settle or OT- Senat in the third.

I still don't see us taking a DT @ 19. It just isn't in the blood. I'd love a change in the blood and if Vea is there @19 grab him. He's THE difference maker on the D-line day 1 IMO. Not going to happen IMO either. I think we could trade down at 19. Isaiah Wynn would be a nice pick for that. He's flexible as to where he can play on the line (we like that), he was a senior bowl star, we like that too and he's projected late first round or second. Could we pull off a Fredbeard and move down to get him. We did it with SF a few years ago and that netted us T Will later on as well. A trade down everyone hated turned up a rose and a dandelion

I want Derwin James or trade back.

The problem is I think James will be gone. Who will be there that is worth trading up for?

If we tender Irving with a 2nd and lose him then we pick Hurst.

Not really liking how the 1st is shaping up for us.

After the draft combine the player rankings will change. Especially in the mid to late rounds, players will get shuffled around.
So this may change things quite a bit.
Plus Scandrick is in play on the trading block.
10 draft picks are not going to make this team, so I am all for trading up to get quality over quantity.
Not so much in the 1st round, unless the deal is for Vea or R. Smith. But trading up to get an extra 2nd round, or 3rd round, heck yes.

Maybe a little bit of a trade down in the 1st, get extra picks then move back up. But prefer the picks for the 2019 draft. This may come from the Browns. They have what, 5 picks in the top 100. If they do not go QB with picks 1 and 4 and a QB is there at 19, they may be willing to give up a high pick in 2019 and a 2nd this year to get a QB.

We will need quality picks to possibly replace Hitchens too. We need to be LB head draft. So getting extra 2nd round picks can be a good thing.

The idea of trading up later is appealing to me since I’m more about quality than quantity
A trade up in 2nd for a settle or comparable move
You are right that 10 guys aren’t making the team and in reality some of your Udfa are as likely if not more likely to make team than some of your late picks

Many things will change with the combine and then with the personal workouts. We probably solve the 1 tech in free agency because appears we hate to draft one. Trading back is most likely a good option.

i'd trade back if derwin james, tremund edwards, roquan smith or vea aren't there. i'd also trade up a couple spots if only 1 of them was left as our pick approached. if no trade up or back was available i'd consider davenport if he were there.

in a trade back i'd target payne, hurst, ronnie harrison, marcus davenport, rashaan evans, or even denzel ward

The Cowboys will work their board and phones as usual. But, the bottom line - if the Cowboys could come away with 5 players in the first 3 rounds they did damn good. There isn't a need to come away with 9 or 10 players from this draft.

I was thinking along the same lines. I don't see that many roster spots for rookies, and so don't want to be picking guys we won't have room for. Push draft value toward the 2nd and 3rd rounds.

I always like pushing picks to the following year, given the 1 round bump you usually get. If you have any patience, it's a no brainer.

Also, our real trade value for draft day may not come from Scandrick, but Byron. He's a bad fit for us, given our young depth in the secondary, but could be an interesting pickup for another team, particularly with the potential for picking up a 5th year.

I think if we tender Irving a second and no one picks him up it will be a good deal for the team--until he inevitably gets hurt or suspended at some points by next year at which time everyone will say "I knew it was coming" even though they want to tender him a 1st and keep him right now.

I was a Byron Jones fan going into his 2nd year, but he was unimpressive last year. I still would like to see what Kris Richard can do with him, but if he was traded I wouldn’t be upset.

I can just hear the draft day conversation...

Jerry Jones: “Hey, Rod...we know Vea’s available @19, but do you think you can get by without him?”

Rod Marinelli: “Sure thing, boss! Besides...what would I do with a 6’5” / 340lb DT anyway?”

JJ: “Thanks, buddy! Now we can grab a project TE @19 and sit him behind Witten for a few seasons.”

We have 10 picks, but only 1 extra one that has any value IMO. Sometimes you catch a guy like Woods sliding way down the board, but the 5th round on is much more likely to get you a Devin Street or Ryan Russell than a starter.

Outside of those Woods style exceptions, it's dart throw territory. And those darts don't have much value as trading chits either.

The same thing was said about OL until Tyron came around. Perhaps getting a player like Vea would do the same thing
