Because you don't play starters in preseason. It's not worth it. You have 17 regular season games and the playoffs. The human body can't take it
He's a rookie, he needs to get acclimated to the NFL and I doubt he'll be a 3 down lineman from week 1.
They use the first regular season game to get players ready for the rest of the season.

I totally agree. He does need to play in preseason. Preseason is for rookies and young players. You can’t protect a player just because they’re your top pick and just throw them to the wolves on opening day. That’s a good way for a young player to lose their confidence, get injured and fail.

He hasn’t even earned a starting a job yet. Lol You don’t just hand a rookie a starting job because they’re your top pick, then sit them during preseason. Get real! He’s going to have to earn a starting job and that will start in training camp and preseason games to get acclimated the NFL football. Rookies need game reps in preseason. That’s what preseason is for, the rookies. You can’t be throwing a rookie on the field on opening day who hasn’t had preseason reps and expect them to hold up against starting players.

He will start or they totally blew it on the draft. He better start or they aren't winning it all this year.

You guys have to tamper the enthusiasm, if he was all that, he would come out as a Junior. Most superstars don't wait.

Chances are he will start, but he won’t be handed a job. If he’s going to end up being a good player he has to earn the job.

You guys? I’m not the one who already handed him a starting job. Lol We’ll find out if he ends up being a good player when the games start.

He is all that. Exactly what they needed to add to the team.

His lack of sacks has me concerned. I keep hearing that he wasn't asked to rush the passer in college, but I have to question that. He wasnt asked to get sacks on 2nd and 3rd and longs?

Aaron Donald had 11 sacks his senior year in college

He has the ability to rush the passer and push the pocket into the qb.

Mazi will obviously get some PT during preseason games, but certainly not more than two quarters. He needs the work, even if it may be up against some other rookies/backups. But needs to learn and get in condition. And he will be in the starting rotation come the opener.

Check this out. Great film breakdown and analysis by an Eagles fan. Clearly, some Philly fans wanted DT Mazi Smith.

Glad our Cowboys got him instead. Thank you, Will McClay!

Have faith in McClay, they are drafting 'talent' not statistics. Its the Tyler and Micah effect, not by just watching tape, it's evaluating physical talents/traits and identifying how/what that can produce at the next level....hasnt it already been muted that we see Mazi as having more ability on pass-rush?

In any case I think Defenses hunt and work in in packs with facilitators (ala Hankins keeping LVE clean).....im sure Mazi open's gaps and double teams to the benefit of Osa and whoever's rushing inside.

Game time in pre season and regular season are precious. To evaluate a play teams have to watch and rewatch game film. In pre-season and with first time NFL players and backups, they have to have a rather large body on camera.

That is the main motivator, as you said, and a longer regular season... healthier roster starts is an important item on the list.

I'm excited for what he's going to do, but NTs can take time to develop. I'm just thrilled we finally took NT seriously. I think Hankins and DQ will be a big help in his development.
Like I’ve posted before, he’s gonna have some good games and some bad games and the key is to learn from the bad ones…..if he’s gonna be dominant it will take a couple years

im 100% behind this pick
