Duke Johnson Requests Trade

This is a key point a lot of people are ignoring. He doesn't want a trade to play behind one of the top RBs in the NFL, he wants a trade to get a chance to do more.

I don’t necessarily disagree but how do you know for sure?

He’d be the primary backup here and a key contributor as a pass catching back.

Obviously I can't know for sure what's in his mind, but it would be odd for a player to ask to be traded with the hope of going to a team where it's even harder to wrestle playing time away from the starter than the team he has been on.

Don't get me wrong, I would love to have Duke Johnson. I think we would be a great asset. I just think it would be hard to convince him he would get significant time either in the backfield with Zeke ahead of him, or in the slot, with Cobb, Austin and even Cooper as options.

The Cowboys could tell him they want to use him as a receiver and RB which could give him significant snaps even with Zeke as the starting RB.

Who would they convince him would sit down at receiver for him to play - Cooper, Gallup or Cobb? Obviously there could occasionally be a 4 WR set, but that would be rare, and could mean Hurns rather than Johnson.

Cobb is on a 1 year deal. They could let Duke Johnson compete with him for snaps.

It's not as if they have an entrenched QB favorite slot WR now that Beasley is gone.

Johnson's path to a bigger contract might be better as a receiver. It seems that teams don't see him as a full time RB. Even 4th/5th receivers are getting paid more than Johnson's 3.75M average and 1.8M base salary in 2018 . Hurns at 5M. Cobb at 5M.

I would be curious to know what his thoughts are on playing more slot than RB, but if they can work it out without it costing the Cowboys too much I would love to have him.

Having a RB that can run ad catch the football as a backup isn't a bad thing. I don't get how acquiring Duke takes away touches for any of our receivers. Just gives us another option out of the backfield. And it takes catches away from Zeke which in my eyes is a good thing. Let Zeke focus on 1 and 2 downs, and tough 1 yard 3rd downs. Bring in Duke as a 3rd down back.

On August 1st 2018 Duke said "rather be a slot receiver than a running back" according to brownswire

He played 80 snaps out of the slot last year, 35 snaps out wide!!!!! which I wouldn't have guessed, and 344 as the HB.

I'd do this with our comp 4th and not look back.......he lockdown our backup position for the next 3 years. We can line him up at backup RB, slot and even WR. In fact, we could have a few packages with him and Zeke on the field together.
can you trade your comp picks? not sure if you can. regardless I would be opposed. Duke was a 3rd round pick. change of pace RBs can be found in later rounds. why invest a 4th. and his salary is too high, we have to think of players we want to sign ahead of paying him 3 mill a year to carry the ball 60-80 times during the season. He would be a nice to have.

I would add Duke if we could ship a contract back. A low pick would be ideal. And our FB would be outta here

Good information, thanks. Of course, regardless of what he wants (I assume he does not have a no trade clause) Cleveland could trade him to anyone they want. He would be nice a nice compliment to both Zeke and Cobb. I doubt it is something that will happen though. The Cowboys are pretty protective of their draft picks.

Agreed

And while I like the player, the dude is pretty ugly. That knocks him down in trade value IMO

Another factor to consider, would you rather have Duke Johnson play for you or against you?

Because there continue to be rumors that the Eagles are looking to add him to their backfield in addition to Jordan Howard, which would give them a dynamic one-two punch at a very reasonable price.

I'd rather get him and also keep him away from a division rival.

Man, I want Duke. He'd bring another element to this offense. Especially for Dak, he loves those short passes. I think he would do well as Zeke's backup.

RB Duke Johnson, Browns

This Browns team has a lot of promise, with a good young defense behind Myles Garrett and a potentially explosive offense under Baker Mayfield. But they sure aren’t good enough to keep one of their most talented playmakers on the sideline.

After handing versatile running back Duke Johnson a three-year, $15.6 million extension in June, the Browns’ offensive brain trust seems to have forgotten he’s on the roster. The veteran has been an afterthought in new offensive coordinator Todd Haley’s scheme, and after leading all running backs in yards per touch during his first three seasons, he has gotten the ball just 33 times in six games―or 5.5 times per game. Johnson’s been one of the league’s better pass-catching backs during his career, and the Browns have only scratched the surface of what they could do with him this year, whether that’s on simple dump-offs and screens …

how the HELL are the iggles interested in all these backs/players? lol...where they getting the money? If Duke Johnson goes to philly that will be huge news. But it is a deep and talented group of backs in this draft class...cheaper than him.
The only type of offer that Cleveland would even consider is a Sean Lee for Duke str8 up.
Cowboys nation would blow up initially, until they actually realized the value a Duke Johnson would bring.
Mano a Mano... just me and you,, would you consider this type of trade?

Duke Johnson is already what a lot of folks think Tayvon Austin can be... not a knock on Austin, just the observation that Johnson can be far more than a gadget player.

Another positive note:

I'm finding a way to put that guy on my team if he's at all available.

yes I would.

I believe the only way that Johnson becomes a Cowboy is on the third day of the draft. If Johnson is still available and Dallas hasn't draft a guy they want by the time they finish the 4th round then I could see Dallas swinging a trade for Johnson. What that might cost, not sure, but it would have to agree on a revised contract for Johnson as his salary for 2019 is $1.8 mil, 2020 is $3.6 mil and 2021 is $4.6 mil which all are far to much for a backup.
