IMO Emmitt is the best rb to ever play the game. When I look at the position I want someone who can :

- get the "hard yard' 4th and 1 , 3rd and goal etc
- take it the distance when the opportunity presents
- be a force in the passing game
- protect the qb against the blitz

Emmitt did all of these things at a higher level for a longer period of time than anyone ever has. Jim Brown and Payton were both amazing and Barry Sanders was the most spectacular runner in history , but if there's one yard needed and everyone knows wheres its going... Give me Emmitt!

Tony Dorsett never seemed to take a "big" hit either. I think it's too early to go ahead and talk about someone being injury prone. I don't have the number of years when it would be legit to bring it up, but sprained ankles happen. If he starts tearing knees up then it is a problem.

Best ever WR = Rice. Probably by a landslipe of opinion

Best ever QB = Elway. Not a landslide here. There would be no runaway in any opinion poles on this one.

Best ever RB = Love Hostile's pick of Bo, but I quess I'd go with Payton. Opinions will vary here too.

Keep in mind best ever has nothing to do with my favorites. QB=Staubach. RB=Emmitt. WR=Irvin.

I understand your point about Emmitt. But Rice is the only runaway in the opinion polls. Why don't you post this thread as a poll and check to see?

Jim Brown = Unbelievable Power Runner, good speed, main focal point of offense and durable.

Walter Payton = Power, good speed, pass catcher, blocker, main focal point of the offense and durability.

Barry Sanders = Quickness, great speed and main focal point of the offense.

Emmitt Smith = Power, good speed, blocker, pass catcher and durability was the main focal point of the offense.

Bo Jackson = Speed, Power all while playing MLB.

Feel free to alter this post as you like.

But my point Hos is that Emmitt is the only player who gets excuses thrown at his greatness ........... even by so called cowboy Fans ......... it puzzles me why that is ..........

If you would be honest and really think about it NO OTHER great NFL player has that happen to them ............ not one.
Terry Bradshaw.

One thing that should be mentioned in this regard is that Emmitt often played hurt. And if you remember correctly, he often had a sprained ankle, pulled hammy, etc. that kept us fans on Emmitt watch during the week.

Part of that is his toughness, but another big part was that Emmitt at 75% (maybe even 50%) was better than the excuses the Cowboys had at backup RB.

With four decent backs, there is no reason for BP to trot out a guy that may only play for a quarter before reinjuring himself, not to mention that he may underperform due to the injury.

I don't think Julius is particularly injury prone, but he has had a bit of bad luck the last couple seasons.

It just gets me mad that some fans doubt the toughness of Julius Jones......Remember it's not JJ that decides if he wants to play or not It's BP.

Is it really that complicated?

People always complain that Emmitt shouldnt be considered the best because he had a line, a good leadblocker, a good offensive balance ect ect

But Jerry Rice had the same advantages .......... and people never complain when he is called the best ........... why is that?

same thing with Joe Montana ........... why is Emmitt the only one who's legacy is punished for having other good people on his team?
This argument about who's the best is useless....

Why because every era is different. The players today are more athletic than the players of 10 years ago. You have rule changes that makes it harder for players to shine or easier. Its reallly not fair for the players of today or yesteryear to compare them to one another.

Emmitts record Jerry's record will all fall.

Why because the NFL will add more teams over the years and the talent pool will get thin so you will see higher scoring games more rushing yards and passing yards.

I wonder how the yards have changed just since Carolina and Jax came into the league?

Not only that, but everyone uses different criteria.

Hostile looks at Bo Jackson and sees maybe the best physically gifted back ever, and says what if, while ignoring the injuries. Zrinkill and many others, myself included, look at Emmitt and say he's the best because he was so durable and did it at a higher level, longer than anyone.

Bottom line, you have to speculate to say anyone could be better than Emmitt given the same set of circumstances. Emmitt did it. He's the best as far as I'm concerned.

My point wasnt arguing who is the best .............. just wanted too know why Emmitt is the only one who is attacked because of his supporting cast ........ when Jerry, Joe, and every other great player had the same advantages.

actually, the type injury is irrelevant. its how many games missed.
