One of my favorite ZZ Top experiences was seeing them at The Warehouse in New Orleans on the Tres Hombres tour and they let it fly. Frank Beard did not stop hittin' the skins, he'd just change the tempo and they'd keep playing until they had played that entire album but not in order, they saved La Grange for last and I have never seen a Warehouse crowd that raucous, everyone was dancing and playing air guitar back at Billy and he was playing with us. Special night.

KZEW had a special concert at UT-Arlington with Charlie Daniels was the mid act and headlined by ZZ Top with this little known opener that was in no way a compatible act with these two acts. He came out in a black suit, white shirt, black tie and white tinnypumps and you could feel the crowd shifting in their seats but at the end of his set, they were no longer in their seats, they were standing and yelling.

When ZZ Top comes out after Charlie has played, Charlie hangs out as he's going to play the first song with them and Billy said to Charlie "Hey Charlie, maybe they should have had the kid in the second spot" and Charlie doesn't miss a beat and snaps back "Billy, the kid might oughta be headlining the show". The crowd loved it and they were laughing and both told the audience to keep their eye on the kid, he was going places. That was Billy "the Kid" Joel. Who actually had The Legend of Billy the Kid on his sophomore album, Piano Man.

Said a lot about those two artists spending some time to give a boost up to a fellow artist just starting out and trying to find his way. Especially when his music was completely different than theirs.

Some will feel it is wrong for the band to continue without Dusty Hill but fail to think what he would want. ZZ Top is a far greater whole than the sum of it's parts and what Billy and Frank want should be considered as well.

But, another large part of the music died for me with the passing of Dusty Hill as they've been a part of my life for 50 years and opened me up to investigate the music that inspired them, the Blues and Texas Roadhouse.
