Landry LSU FS is the way to go :)

I like that Landry kid a alot too. Would fit right in with our LSU defense...BJ, MS....LL

Like Huff lots too.
the guy I'd love to have IF he gets back to 100% is Jason Allen from U of Tenn. But I'm afraid his injury was pretty bad.

RW played LB at OU and weighed 230 pounds without ever touching a weight.

Slay is 200 pounds and plays off the ball.

He is Tech's best defender and special teams tackler.

Great guy off the field but nasty to point of making silly fouls on it.

Hardest hitter in the country IMHO.

Hey JT,
Have you done your Top 10 at the FS position? If so how do you have that shaking out as the bowl season is set to get under way soon?

JT - I haven't seen Slay play myself. Can he cover WRs in nickel packages? If he can cover like Huff can, then he'd get my attention. From what I've been reading, Slay hits much harder than Huff, but Huff's a better cover guy. There are good FS prospects coming out in '06 so I'm hopeful we will get one.

I think Michael Huff will want to play CB in the NFL, that's where the $$$ are at. I think Huff is at better CB anyway. He's not much of a ballhawk for a FS, and a pretty mediocre to poor tackler.

Don't get me started... I would love to see us add DSlay. Many seem to feel he lacks cover skills because he hits so hard, but those of us that have watched him play at least 10 games know better. He is an animal, and in my humble opinion, paired with the Hammer, fuhgittaboutit.

Wow.....sounds like you know the real story on this guy.....and at #22 we might be in the running.....but, I really want offensive players this year.

I'd love to have Huff, if we don't end up taking an O-Lineman in the 1st round.

Well I am originally a Lubbockite (up until the last two years or so) born and raised in West Texas so naturally, I follow Tech. He is a player. He can cover, and cover well. He is also long and lanky in contrast to Roy's body type. Very fluid athlete that has great timing.

One other huge asset to Slay is his upside. He really only has been around big time coaching 2 years, and started only this year at Tech (even though as a back up safety last year he lead the team in pass breakups and tied for team lead in interceptions, which would demonstrate that he can cover).

Again, I am a bit of a homer when it comes to Tech players, however, this kid is the real deal. You do not become Big12 Defensive player of the year without being a flat out stud. Some of the hits I have seen Slay deliver this year have been otherworldly. That shot he put on the Kstate QB was absolute destruction.

can he run block or pass protect? let's not worry as much about our #2 defense going all the way to #1 or something - let's work on our offense and get some balance going on.

Big 12 Deffensive player of the year is no joke. I am sure there is a way to dig up a list of passed winners of the same award, and if it was dug up, said list would be impressive.

Defensive Player of the Year
1996 -- Grant Wistrom, Nebraska
1997 -- Grant Wistrom, Nebraska
1998 -- Dat Nguyen, Texas A&M
1999 -- Mark Simoneau, Kansas State
2000 -- Casey Hampton, Texas
2001 -- Roy Williams, Oklahoma
2002 -- Terence Newman, Kansas State
2003 -- Teddy Lehman, Oklahoma
2004 -- Derrick Johnson, Texas

Looks like Nick Reid was in fact the 2005 Big 12 Def. Player of the Year.

Slay or Huff ??? One of those questions for the ages. If you guys want to be a little more patient, you'll get your answer to the question after this year's Rose Bowl game.

Huff will have a chance to prove himself as the top FS in the game if he can patrol the secondary against USC's passing game and if he can tackle Reggie Bush.

Huff will either look like a world beater or a dust eater. No offense to Huff fans, but I'm hoping USC embarrasses him, Young, and the University of Texas. :D I think Young is too focused on proving something over his sour grapes regarding the Heisman...he hasn't distinguished himself since the award ceremony, imo....I think he's going to make some big errors, and I think Texas will go the same route Oklahoma went last year.

I remember Oklahoma actually being favored because they were supposed to have the better athletes...all the talk about USC not being able to hang with them....lol....look out Texas. :laugh2:

I hope the Longhorns put an end to the USC run and Mac Brown get his chance to show his critics once and for all that he is a damn fine coach. I'm not going to kid myself to think this is going to be an easy game for Texas because I do have a lot of respect for the job USC has done but as a Loyal UT fan all I can say is Hook'um Horns!!!!

How odd. Reid won the SBC version of the award, Slay won the AP version. Slay was also named first team all america by SI.

http://www.redraiders.com/cgi-bin/printit2000.pl

Texas Tech senior free safety Dwayne Slay was honored by Sports Illustrated magazine today as a First-Team All-America defensive back. The SI honor comes just days after he was named the Big 12's Defensive Player of the Year by various publications, including the Associated Press.

Slay joined three other Big 12 brethren on Sport Illustrated's annual first-team list including Vince Young, Texas (quarterback), Jonathan Scott, Texas (offensive line) and Mason Crosby, Colorado (kicker).

En route to earning All-America status, Slay set a Big 12 mark with eight forced fumbles this season and established himself as one of the league's hardest hitting defensive backs. His two forced fumbles against Kansas State led to touchdowns, while his forced fumble early in the second half against Texas A&M sparked Tech's first of six-straight scoring drives. Slay ranks third in the conference with 9.2 tackles per game and leads the conference's defensive backs.

Already named to the Big 12 Coaches first team, Slay has been selected as the league's defensive player of the year by several Big 12 media outlets and The Sporting News.

Slay and his teammates will get one final chance to add another number to the win column as Tech will face the Alabama Crimson Tide in the 2006 AT&T Cotton Bowl on Jan. 2.

Any one of those guys would be great, if drafted late 1st-early 2nd rd., but we need to take advantage of the glut of NFL quality OTs in the 1st rd. next year. There are at least 4-5 OTs coming out who are serious LTs, but they most likely will be gone by the 52nd-58th pick in the 2nd rd. Therefore, we need to concentrate on getting the best OT when we pick in the 1st.

There are several very good FSs in the 2nd & 3rd rds., like Nate Salley from Ohio St., or Greg Blue from Georgia. Being from Ohio, I got a chance to see a lot of Salley, & while he is not considered a ball hawk, he is almost always in the right place in coverage. I watched Blue when Georgia dominated Tennessee, & dude was all over the field, making plays in coverage, and supporting the run with textbook tackles. I would take either one of them if it meant also getting a franchise OLT.

We also could use a quality OG in the 3rd., since both starters are AARP members:D , and the jury's still out on Peterman. Either a OG, or a NT. We really need to firm up the position with a stud like Kyle Williams from LSU.

Sounds good, howzabout trading our first round pick for two seconds, then picking up Slay and two Olinemen however we can make it work?

Didn't Huff have zero INT's at saftey this year?

Slay I don't know. Who's the best defensive player the Raiders have put into the NFL so far? Maybe he just looks good by comparison becuase everyone else on that D blows so bad.

Leron Landry looks good but 1st round pick good? Probably not.

Combine will tell all. Ernest Shazor and that saftey from Oregon State were supposed to be 1st round talents but both went undrafted.
