he probably stole our playbook.....

I can think of no other reason to sign him.

:hammer:

For weeks and weeks a bunch of us have been saying he is the worst kicker in the league, even after his game winner. If they want a kicker who is basically giving you the odds of a coin flip more power to them.

Not happening with Parcells here. The concept does not fit into his narrow view and was likely one of the things that he and Hoffman butted heads over.

Toby Gowin was the punter and kick off specialist during Parcells first season in Dallas.

McBriar just hasn't learned how to kick off. I believe when they brought him in, they hoped he would learn to do it. I believe they said at the time that which ever punter learned to kick off would have an advantage in last seasons training camp. Neither punter could consistently out kick Cundiff.

The biggest difference in return yard average is likely a result of coverage units...

Not necessarily. Cundiff's kickoffs, while rarely deep, were often high, giving the coverage unit a little extra time to get down the field.

Akers had a much better starting average despite only a few more yards on his kickoffs, so the coverage team doesn't explain everything.

Akers kicks were 3.4 yards deeper, and the net change in field position was 7.5 yards. My guess is France's kicks don't hang in the air quite as long either. Are our coverage units up to it?

In his first season when Parcells was letting the coaches (Steve Hoffman) do things their own way while he figured out what he had.

McBriar just hasn't learned how to kick off. I believe when they brought him in, they hoped he would learn to do it. I believe they said at the time that which ever punter learned to kick off would have an advantage in last seasons training camp. Neither punter could consistently out kick Cundiff.
He's not learning because he is not being taught. When they brought McBriar in Hoffman was still here and HE would have used him on kickoffs but Parcells started getting involved (he should be involved, he's he head coach yadda yadda yadda) and we went back to the 1970's convention of the kicker kicking off. Like I said, "Not gonna happen while Parcells is here."

Eagles claimed Jose Cortez off waivers.
We have a feeling the Eagles will use Cortez as a kickoff specialist with David Akers probably returning this weekend. Oct. 25 - 5:46 pm et

Any opinion on Todd France in the short time he was with Philly?

That's what this is. Cortez will only be kicking off, to save Akers from having to do that. Cortez does kickoff pretty well most of the time.

I'd die if on that monday game against the eagles, Cortez actually bangs a couple of 50 Yarders on us.

...the reason why Cundiff is effective on kickoffs is the hangtime he kicks with. Much better to have a kicker who can kick in the mid to high five seconds than one who sends it through the endzone. You have a better chance of pinning them back.

I cannot believe Cortez would get another NFL job.....bonehead move by the Eagles.

He won't be kicking FGs for them as Akers is coming back to do that. He does have a good enough leg for kickoffs. That was one of the reasons why Coach Parcells kept him so long to begin with.

Let's also remember that Philly has the type of talent and team and management that they could afford to use Cortez strictly as a kickoff man, a job at which I think he excelled.

I'm sure Andy Reid will make a first class kicker out of Cortez. Of course we had to dump Steve Hoffman, for what reason I don't know, and does anyone here think Joe Spragna (sp??) is a better OL coach than George Warhop? I think all the assistants are "gofers" for BP who does all the coaching himself he's such a control freak...

Interesting move by the Eagles. Todd France kicked for the NFLE Hamburg Sea Devils this year. I attended the last game, where he was to break the NFLE FG season record . Oh man, he surely doesn't like pressure. He was nearly perfect before this game. He missed the first three attempts in this game. He made the fourth to tie the record. But he looked good all other games I saw.
Bring im in and see what he can do. We better start winning the games on offense and not on special teams. I don't trust kickers at all.
