Eagles Expected to Romp Again in NFC East

By BARRY WILNER
AP Football Writer

Donovan McNabb probably could throw his passes left-handed to Terrell Owens, who could carry a mirror downfield admiring himself, and the Eagles still would win this division.

An exaggeration? Sure. But one that emphasizes how lopsided the NFC East race figures to be again this season. By Thanksgiving, Philadelphia could be celebrating a fifth straight division crown.

It isn't just that the Eagles have the best overall roster in the East, filled with leaders, and an excellent coaching staff. They also know how to win, and getting to the Super Bowl last winter will be a further boost.

Besides, the other three division members are, at best, mediocre. The Giants have questions all over on defense and on the offensive line, and a relative novice -- albeit a very talented one -- at quarterback. The Cowboys also have a lot of holes and leadership questions. Washington seems good enough to send Joe Gibbs back to NASCAR very soon.

The Eagles swept their divisional games in 2004 and are quite capable of a repeat. Even with the tumult Owens has caused and season-ending injuries to Todd Pinkston and Correll Buckhalter, they far and away are the class of the East.

That's most noticeable defensively. Philly's secondary, led by Brian Dawkins and Michael Lewis at safety, is the league's best. Jeremiah Trotter was sensational at middle linebacker when inserted into the lineup in midseason. Defensive end Jevon Kearse should be more of a menace in his second season with the team, and the line is versatile and deep, even without Corey Simon, who was granted free agency Sunday.

Coordinator Jim Johnson will call for blitzes and more blitzes.

"We know we are a nasty defense. We know we are a good defense, but last year we didn't have enough takeaways," Trotter said. "That's a focus for us this year, getting the ball."

When they get it, McNabb will hand it or throw it to do-everything back Brian Westbrook, a perfect player for Philly's scheme. Or he'll find L.J. Smith, a tight end ready to emerge.

And then there is T.O. Somehow, despite all the turmoil this summer, there's a belief that Owens will be as dynamic as ever -- maybe if only to stick it to the organization he's upset with for not renegotiating a $49 million contract.

Few coaches could steer a team through such dysfunction, but Andy Reid is masterful handling myriad personalities. Besides, only Owens really is disruptive.

"I can't sit here and try to tell you what Terrell is going to do," said Dawkins, an All-Pro. "Only Terrell knows what he is going to do."

Whatever he does, it will make headlines.

The main headlines coming out of Dallas could be whether Bill Parcells will stick it out beyond this season if the Cowboys are losers again. Same thing for Gibbs in D.C. And from the Meadowlands, the focus will be on just how far Eli Manning has progressed.

Manning is nursing a sore elbow, robbing him of valuable practice time. He played poorly for the first four games of his stint as a starter last season, but came on in the final three to raise hopes in New York.

Unfortunately for Giants fans, this team doesn't appear ready to have a winning record, particularly if it has injuries. Other than Michael Strahan, who comes off a torn pectoral muscle that cost him half of last season, there are no defensive stars -- although linebacker Antonio Pierce was a solid addition and rookie Justin Tuck has had a strong summer.

Tiki Barber, a superb all-around back in his prime, is the best offensive weapon, and WR Plaxico Burress could be a nice complement for tight end Jeremy Shockey if he has his head on straight.

Coach Tom Coughlin needs more peace between players and staff than he had last season, and he can't afford to overwork Barber. Even if the Giants don't reach .500, if Manning develops, the year will be worthwhile.

Parcells has been in midseason form this summer, bemoaning all kinds of perceived problems with his club. He has some big-time playmakers in safety Roy Williams, running back Julius Jones, tight end Jason Witten and, quite possibly, first-round pick DeMarcus Ware. He has been unstoppable as a 3-4 end or linebacker during the preseason.

Parcells also has little support for Williams in the secondary, and while Williams might be the best run defender at his position in the NFL, he's not so hot in coverage.

Also, the Cowboys have key players with lots of wear, starting with quarterback Drew Bledsoe and extending to wide receivers Terry Glenn and Keyshawn Johnson, guard Larry Allen, defensive tackle La'Roi Glover and nose tackle Jason Ferguson.

"We've got a few moving parts," Parcells says. "I wish it wasn't quite this many."

One of the major moving parts in Washington could be Gibbs, the franchise's most successful coach in his first stint. Another stinker like 2004 could drive him back to Tony Stewart and Bobby Labonte.

The Commanders have that potential, too. Their defense, coordinated by Gregg Williams, is just fine and gets back linebacker LaVar Arrington to complement linebacker Marcus Washington, cornerback Shawn Springs and, if he doesn't get sentenced to jail time for threatening someone with a gun in a dispute over an all-terrain vehicle, safety Sean Taylor.

But the offense, Gibbs' baby, has been weak. Neither Patrick Ramsey nor Mark Brunell seems to be the answer at quarterback. If that doesn't change, would Gibbs go with Jason Campbell, the rookie from Auburn he traded up to get in the draft?

Running back Clinton Portis should get 1,200 yards rushing behind an upgraded line that has a healthy tackle in Jon Jansen this year. But few teams will be as dismal throwing it, and the special teams need upgrading.

Predictions: Philadelphia (12-4); New York (7-9); Dallas (7-9); Washington (5-11).

I don't disagree that they should win the division. I just hope the Eagles under estimate us...and pay for it.

The gap is closing faster than Philly might think.

what a bunch of BS.

LJ smith has been a TE ready to emerge since he was a rookie, all i heard about was he's going to be the best TE in the league.

Westbrook will get tagged so hard by RW and then they will find out how one dimensional their Offense is.

yeah between them and the Giants.

Take a look at some of the key players we have on our team and the shelf life they have. In two years our starting QB, WR, RG and LG will be history. This offense is built to win now, and poorly built in my opinion.

I think we have a good to great core group. Do we need some help in spots....yup I agree.

Look at our future though:
J. Jones
Witten
Roy
Newman
Henry
Ware
Burnett
Canty
Spears
Pettiti
I am sure I am missing a couple others.

Agree we need to look at our O-line and Wr next year. I believe we continue the FA approach to the QB spot.

I have said it before and I will say it again.

To be the man you got to beat the man...and as of the last few years the Eagles have been the man in the NFC East.

That hasn't been near a headline for 6 months. I guess these guys don't read the papers they write for....

This is where I stopped reading.

Terrance Newman, Anthony Henry, Aaron Glen, and Keith Davis = "little support for Williams in the secondary"???

This writer may be right about Philly for the most part but he's talking out of his arse as far as the Cowboys are concerned.

Saw this article earlier and basically turned my nose up at it. Not because of the love the writer gave Philly. It's just that it's obvious this person hasn't really covered the 'Boys offseason. I mean, come on. Did anybody read this.

Parcells also has little support for Williams in the secondary,
Guess he forgot our FA pickups in Glenn and Henry and the resurgent Newman.

The article just seems fundamentally biased in that it highlights Philly and not really give the other teams any kind of due. I have no problem with an article pumping up Philly. They've been top dawgs for awhile. I have a problem with not giving the other teams in the division more than a cursory blurb with obviously no research.

Yeah, its the thing i always b**** about. Too many people just pick the Pats and the Eagles cause "they find ways to win" or they're still the elite teams cause theyve been winning for a while without giving any consideration to roster changes.

Plus i just hate the eagles :D

A lot of this is BS- clearly a Eagles homer. they have BIG problems because of TO- you notice he totally blew that off. They have NO depth at RB- and Westbrook is not the most sturdy of players. Granted their D will be very good- but they gave up big plays and yds and TD's last year, not as often as other teams but often enough. They got run on a fair amount. As has been pointed out, how long has their TE been supposed to break out? Who have they got to catch the ball outside of TO?
And that total BS about Williams being alone in the secondary- that by itself shows this idiot to be just that. MORON.

Roy Williams does not have much help in the secondary? HUh

Underestimate Henry,Newman and Glenn

Holes in Leadership?

I am not sure where there is a hole in leadership to tell you the truth.

Don't get me wrong, because we have to prove it on the field, but we should get a little credit for the moves regarding Henry and Ferguson and Glenn. Philliy should win the division, butdon't make it sound as if we have nothing!

Austin and WG have this thread pegged. Most in this forum would not disagree with the premise of the story...Philly is still the class of the NFC East and should still win the division. I too, stopped reading this post, originally after learning that , "Roy Williams has no help in the secondary"- That is complete B.S. Period.
The writer chose not to research anything of value outside of the City of brotherly shove.
MY goodness, 'Frisco fans drowning in obscurity know that we now have Henry, Glenn, and a revamped Newman.

(Heck, I would not trade Philly's secondary with our's straight up. They do have Dawkins who is no slouch but the two young corners simply benefit from Jim Johnson's aggressive scheme.) <--- Everything in parenthesis is my opinion, of course.

Anyway, the writer concludes his inside slant on the Cowboys fortunes for the upcoming season with this gem, " Parcells may retire at the end of the season" -WHOOPITY-FRICKIN-DO. Thanks for that, Barry! You frickin Mediot!

Eagles defense has weakened the last couple years and now with Simon gone their run stop will take a hit.

Depth wise the Eagles are weak staying above water only because of talent at key positions. If they have an injury they will fall flat on their face.

We have never matched up against the Eagles very well until this year.

Henry -> Owens
Ware -> Westbrook (screen passes the Cowboy killer)
Eagle run -> Ferguson/Glover, Spears, Williams
Eagles pass -> Henry, Newman, Glenn, Williams

I am fully confident our defense gives the Eagles fits this year. Remember the Steelers 3-4 flat out owned the Eagles last year.

I am also fully confident that we will be successful running against them.

The only thing I am unsure of is pass protection from their blitz, Bledsoe, and the passing game.

You every year I hear the same song and dance about how the Eagles will be weaker because they lost (insert name here) player on defense...yet every year they come out with a stout defense and just replace the body of the player they lost with a new name (Trotter, Douglas, Taylor gone they replace them with someone else and don't miss a beat)
Later Trotter and Douglas come back after being let downs for the other team they went to and trotter plugs right back into Jim's defense and is an impact again.

Simon is gone because they think their rookie will be fine with the defense.

Greg Lewis has looked decent towards the end of last year and now in Pre-season...rookie WR Reggie Brown has impressed me in the pre-season as it normally takes a rook until season 2 in the WCO. For now TO is playing.

Westbrook will be westbrook and he gets hurt they have moats...they will sign another RB to spell those guys before the season starts.

I don't know if the eagles will improve any, and even if they do not do as good as they have the last few years...it is still good enough at this time to win the NFC East. :(

They are missing a beat just look at the stats. Replacing any starter with a rookie will have consequences. I forgot about Moats he has looked good.

This writer was obviously basing most of his points on last year, as is obvious by that no secondary help bit. BP complaining is probably a good thing, it means he wants to motivate players to step up because we have a chance to do something this year. Last year he obviously realized we weren't going anywhere and kind of gave up in that regard. As far as us having no leadership, that is total BS. Most of the guys we added this offseason we got partly because of their strong leadership ability e.g. rivera, spears, burnett, glenn. That being said, I'm fine with being underestimated, it will be fun watching this underdog surprise some teams, even if we aren't better than the eagles we'll be closer than many think.
