Dave Spadaro, of PhiladelphiaEagles.com, reports Philadelphia Eagles OL Shawn Andrews has been signed to a contract extension that will run through the 2015 season. The deal extends his current contract by seven years. A 2 p.m. ET press conference is scheduled at the NovaCare Complex to announce the deal.

Eagles | Andrews' extension could be worth up to $40 million

Updating a previous report, the Associated Press reports Philadelphia Eagles OG Shawn Andrews has signed a seven-year extension that could be worth up to $40 million and includes $12 million in first-year money. The deal also includes between $10 million and $11 million in total bonus money. Andrews was a first-alternate to the Pro Bowl after the 2005 season and the team wanted to lock him up because of the way the guard market has exploded in free agency the past two years.

Good move by the Eagles F.O. Andrews is a beast.

Now...will they re-sign Dawkins?

Craziness.

I am all for locking up your young talent, but Andrews has played ONE year.

If he decides to eat more (which given his history is a distinct possibility), they are going to regret this.

Seems to be a trend here: only if you are pretty young will the birds pony up real money.

good move by Philly

resigning Dawkins would go against their policy of not resigning players on the other side of 30

Not necessarily. It is a delicate balance. If a player is loyal and can still play you have to reward him if for no other reason than keeping the team’s morale up. If you are a player in the prime of your career, 26-28 range playing in Philly you know their days are numbered whether you are performing at a high level or not. Sure sometimes you will keep a player too long but the dividends far exceeds the risks imo. In the age of free agency I don't think you want to be considered a cheap organization ala Philly but on the other hand you don't want to be considered an open checkbook either ala Washington. :)

Forget it! I can't see Dawkins running around the NFL in 2007 as a FA ...just won't happen in 2007 ...now in 2008/9?

I won't be surprised if it comes to be and I think that will be one of your org's dumbest decisions ever.

If they play hardball with Dawkins, it would just show their pattern of business. They did it to Vincent, Trotter, Douglas and Taylor. Nothing has changed.

They have always signed their young players and of course, McNabb.

I just don't think Jim Johnson (Eagles Defensive Coordinator) would be ...as you state "dumb" enough to let a talent like awkins just drift Into the FA pool without giving it his most careful consideration, or without a legitimate reason.

The reason I would be surprised if the Eagles blantantly sent Brian Dawkins to pasture in 2007 is because the Eagles have already started building, but need more time to groom a replacement that would fill the Dawks shoes. For example ...

Scott Ware (Strong Safety); Rookie

Michael Lewis (Strong Safety); Pro-bowler

Corey Peoples (Safety); 1 year NFL experience

J.R. Reed (Safety);3 years experience

Sean Considine (Safety); 1 year experience

Brian Dawkins' (Free Safety) job is to cover a blitz, come forward to help on inside runs, or to cover the field .

The Strong Safety takes a position on the same side as the tight end. Right now, J.R. Reed and Michael Lewis are providing excellent help to Dawkins. Under his mentoriship they will be able to uphold Dawkins position if it vacated -- but certainly not until Eagles coaching feels it is time, and Dawkins is either ready or shows that he is ineffective. And right now, he's effective!

It's not Jim Johnson's decision. I am sure he would have liked to have kept Bobby Taylor or Troy Vincent or Jeremiah Trotter or Corey Simon. But Eagles management let them all go.

They wouldn't "send him out to pasture", but I can certainly see them giving him a less than flattering offer and that would push him out the door.

Gotta hand it to the Eagles...

Every time one of their players gets to the wrong side of 30; they have replacements in place.

The switch over from Vincent and Taylor to Brown and Sheppard was impressive.

I hope in a couple of years, we are fortunate enough to be ready to do the same with Newman and Henry.

Not every position. The decisions to replace Douglas with McDougal failed and they had to go and spend the money for Kearse. I don't think they replaced Simon last year. They had to bring Trotter back. They still haven't replaced Carlos Emmons after trying with both Simoneau and Keith Adams. Now they have Barber, who has a year left at most. Unless that young player they got last year from San Diego State (name escapes me) works out, they still don't have a young player there.

They did do a good job with the corners, but I don't see it everywhere else. They are not to the level of say, the Steelers, that lose people every year and don't skip a beat.
