How far the ball travels forward isn't the issue if you're looking at whether it was "passed backward". The trick there is to look at the position of his hands
If the ball goes forward, it's a forward pass. It really is that simple.

It was an obvious penalty missed by the refs and the Eagles.

Oh well.

Passing is relative to the player, so forward momentum of the player has to be taken into account. You can pass the ball backward but if you were already moving forward at 5km/hr, that forward momentum is added to the ball. If you pass the ball backward at half that speed the ball will still move forward.

If the ball has to travel backward that is relative to the ground it means the ball has to physically go backward.

If you watch rugby union you'll see a number of passes that float forward but are ruled backward. It depends on how the rule is stated but I think it's just "passes backward"? Not too sure.

Wilson has noticeably more zip on his intermediate passes for sure
he pitched it at the 47, dude caught it at the 48, that's forward in football

Eagles will lose again next week at the Rams and everybody in the nation who has been all over them will finally see they are not in the same league as the big boys. And yes, we are one of the big boys with Zeke, Lee and our new secondary...

Interesting point.

A lateral is a bit different than a pass. I’d be curious to see what the NFL says about this play later this week.

It's just simple physics, the ball will continue forward at the same speed Wilson was running when he pitched it. It doesn't matter if he pitched it backwards, the ball was caught ahead of the pitch point. It's an illegal forward pass.
