Twitter: Earl Thomas officially holds out of camp for contract ext

Earl is ancient for a DB and has battled injuries two years running.

He's already made plenty of money to retire.

I'm more positive on Heath than most. ET is an upgrade, but how much, and he doesn't really solve our issue at safety, which is more at SS than FS.

This is a slight step toward signing him, but comp picks make it hard to make this trade happen. They'll be getting a third next year anyway.

Maybe we could juice up the trade with a player instead of more picks.

No, their comp pick will be in 2020 after a year of dealing with an unhappy and possibly not available due to holding out player. Also, Thomas is much more than a mere upgrade to Heath. They are not in the same league when it comes to performance, experience, and leadership.

Yeah that's worth noting. They can get a pick for next years draft or wait until 2020 to get a late round version of that pick.

They both explain what was said? What does that mean. I think the average person with a little common sense knows what he meant.

They are not in the same league in terms of money either.

Thomas isn't going to sit out, and he isn't going to loaf in a contract year.

PFF has ET ranked #9
Heath ranked #35 - while playing out of position at SS for much of the season
Woods ranked #43

Reasonable to think that Heath moves up the rankings if they keep him at FS, and Woods likely moves up as he gets experience too.

Also reasonable to expect ET to continue to drop down the rankings.

ET is an upgrade on the field.
Another plus for him - experienced with what Richard wants.
Downsides: a downgrade of our cap and draft capital.

It's very hard to get value when you have to shell out a free agent money contract *and* a pick, especially if were talking about a position where we're average with a young draft pick we like who has shown promise.

You know what I’d love to see. A free agent in Thomas’ position come out and say sign me or trade me or when I become a free agent, I won’t sign until the comp pick deadline passes thus screwing you out of your comp pick. That’s would really elevate the impasse and be fun to watch. I know they would be risking getting less money but a free agent like Thomas will still get his money. He could agree to a deal but not sign it until the deadline passes.

Thomas is not a FA and he's going to start losing salary by not showing up. He's a moron and not a man of his word.

It's really not. Thomas is at the age where DB's often get rendered ineffective due to age/injury. He's had injury issues for two years running. Hard to judge what he has left at this point.

True but he will be next year. I’d love to see him say “sign me to an extension now or trade me now. If you don’t, when I become a free agent next year, I won’t sign until after the deadline thus costing you the comp pick.” I know it’s far fetched. I just think it would be fun to watch a player do it.

What was he holding out for if he did not feel entitled to more money?

And again, you started out saying that being under contract meant one had no right to hold out. Is Martin under contract or not?

As such giving a top 100 pick AND $10m is a nonstarter. I don't think him worth $10m AAV much less the draft pick. A 4th and let him keep his $8m AAV he currently enjoys is the most I would go. That is an overpay IMO but he definitely helps the defense.

JPP was traded for a third and a swap of 4ths (a six spot drop down - valued as a late 6th). He hasn't made the pro bowl since 2012 (2 times total, one time app pro). Also, he has 1.5 hands.

ET is a few months younger. A 6 time probowler with 5 all pro honors (3 first, 2 second team). He has two hands.

Please tell me how we are gonna get Thomas for a 3rd again.
