Let me get this straight. We only got a 5th rounder for Cooper...and we were told that was the best you should expect because someone else was taking on his 20m cap hit....but 8 games into the season we were open to giving up a 1st day pick and take on a similar cap hit to get a WR?
Timing is everything. Trading Cooper when they did, and the way they trashed him before the trade, they were bound to get the lowest value possible for him. It was a huge mistake. Trading him mid season right before the trade deadline gets maximum value. That's why the Texans could ask for a 1st for Cooks. We should be happy the Cowboys didn't make this deal. Even offering a 3rd for him is a joke.
They made the same mistake with La'el Collins. Forget about how you feel about Collins and all the fat and lazy talk. You don't tell the team you want to trade him to, "oh by the way, he is fat and lazy". Let them think they are getting a quality RT. When you sell your used car do you tell the perspective buyer about all the problems you have had with it? Collins would have had value if they kept him through training camp and looked to trade him before the season started. Wait for a team to lose a OT to injury then call them. The Cowboys could have made it look like they had two starting RTs and were reluctantly willing to unload one.
The Cowboys have made some good trades now and again, but since Jimmy left, mostly they get fleeced on trades going all the way back to Joey Galloway.
The Cowboys were desperate to unload Cooper and Collins and telegraphed that to the rest of the league. That's why they got fleeced. Never look desperate when you are trying to make a deal.
