I'll see how the season plays out to worry about Melton's contract.
Jerry Jones said just a few minutes ago, on the Fan, Melton is not ruled out yet, but it is doubtful. Same for Rolando, but he is more doubtful.
They will contniue to check concussion issue with T. McClain, and will see what happens this afternoon yet.

Hatcher had worse next to him and was a sack machine in the same defense.

Right, but this defense, specifically, which Melton produced sacks in, is designed to get that guy to the QB.

And he's getting push.

Never measure a guy in sacks. Teams can eliminate sacks if they just quick-throw everything. It's about pressure, not sacks, and Melton is doing OK there.

The problem is there's no edge speed. Spencer and Lawrence will have to provide that.

Rolando McClain is a bigger priority than Melton. Even Bruce Carter is a bigger priority than Melton right now. I'd try to get Melton to renegotiate at around $5M/yr. No team is going to break the bank for Melton right now as things stand. I'd sure like to have Melton back, though.

If Bishop and Coleman continue to get better, we have some options.

Salary cap will increase next year, if Melton does half of what poeople expect, $9 mil may be a bargain.
I'm sure a renegotiation would be in the works.

Way too soon to tell... A whole lot of season left to judge

True enough.

You don't plug a guy in with a bunch of guys (who are suspect 'D-lineman') that he's never been plugged in with before and have him tear it up.

Do we want him squeezing water out of a rock?

At this pace he needs to renegotiate or we let him walk. I realize he's still young but I would hope Jerry learned his lesson with Rat. Look to the draft plus we have Coleman coming up strong, Bishop, Josh Brent will be back, Okoye in limbo, and Whaley. By the end of the season we should have everybody back and that's when the competition begins!! Oh man I can't wait. 2015 looks promising in that respect...

Have you guys seen Demarcus Lawrence? Pretty sure through 4 games, he's done nothing to earn his draft status. Epic bust.

Snip snip.

IMO the RG3 and Sam Bradford situations just to name two have shown us that maybe ACLs really do take more than 6 or 8 months to recover from... Just as we thought for many years. Still think Peterson's miracle recovery skewed everyone's expectations in that department.

That said, many people pointed out that Pro Bowl aside, Melton never had a season as good as Hatcher did last year, and maybe we're seeing that.

I'm more worried about his ability to stay healthy then anything else at this point. Coming off season ending knee surgery, he's now had a nagging groin injury in TC that has apparently resurfaced. That's just not good for a lineman depending on explosion to be effective.

I'm a little skeptical that he's going to be fully healthy this year at all, or at least until much later in the season. If that turns out to be the case, they'd be taking a big risk in taking on those fully guaranteed final years of his contract.

From what I understand about his contract, we will have to pay him 9 million dollars if we decide to keep him next year. I know he's hurt, but he has only produced 3 tackles and a fumble recovery in 3 games.

He sat out the entire pre-season, and we were assured he's ready to go. It looks like he is going to miss this week's game, so with a quarter of a season gone, he has basically done nothing. I thought in order for us to success, he had to be as good as advertised, and he hasn't even been close.

Let's say he turns it on at the end of the year and somehow produces 7 sacks, 2 FF and 30 tackles. Do you seem him staying on the team next year?
He was coming off a major injury and, as you say, missed the preseason. Did anyone expect that the first quarter of the season would be Melton at his best? If so, those people were delusional.

In terms of planning for next year, the only thing I would care about is how he progresses through the year and what he looks like in November and December.

Whatever decision the Cowboys make after the season, it will not be based on the 1st 4 games of this season.

They are in a no lose situation. If they cut him, they don't lose anything, but if he ends up having a great season then they have him under contract.

The team took a flier on another injured player. There is no telling what they will get out of him, it is a desperate long-shot on-the-cheap and at the end of the year they'll decide what he's worth,,, kinda like Spencer.

No........................not for $9 million................very smart move by the team to basically go with a one year deal with a team option. This way we can cut bait on the guy and we are not tied to him for the next 4 or 5 seasons.

Nope. I renegotiate if he really does turn it on. Otherwise, I let him walk.

On the flip side, I like what we've seen of Coleman at that position, a lot. Either way, we do need to add more talent to this DL both in VFA and high in the draft next season.

I agree Idgit, he has not come anywhere close as advertised..........................let him walk.

It's about sacks. Teams are throwing more and more, which leads to more opportunities for sacks. JJ Watt gets his sacks, regardless of how fast the QB can get the ball out. Watt will get home a few times per game.

Pressures? Pshh. You can pressure a qb, and they still complete the pass. What's the record for qb pressures? Nobody knows. But I know what the record is for sacks in a season.

There's some truth to that, Spencer used to lead the team in pressures while Ware was leading the team with sacks, if you ask me they complimented each other pretty well. We need both types, looks like we have one so far...
