It's disappointing all the young talent we passed on or didn't try hard enough to get over the past few years (Donald, Poe, Cox, Brockers, Richardson, Loteleilei, Casey, Short) because we were too busy clinging on to guys who had success in the past.

It's about sacks. Teams are throwing more and more, which leads to more opportunities for sacks. JJ Watt gets his sacks, regardless of how fast the QB can get the ball out. Watt will get home a few times per game.

Pressures? Pshh. You can pressure a qb, and they still complete the pass. What's the record for qb pressures? Nobody knows. But I know what the record is for sacks in a season.
If you know what the record is for sacks in a season, then you know that nobody in the history of the league has ever gotten "home a few times per game", if by "getting home" you're only counting sacks. Watt has 2 sacks in 3 games this season.

Still on pace for 10-11 sacks, which is insane for a 3-4 DE. But I know what you're saying. Nobody "gets home" a few times a game. Once a game and you're probably leading the league.

Let's see what he does the rest of the season. We have an option on him after the season. He if stays hurt or doesn't produce then his not worth the deal and we just cut him and save the cap.

How many of those guys were even on the board when we picked????

Brockers, Casey and Short. But Richardson and Loteleilei (?) were picked like a pick before us, so if we really wanted them... Same could be said for the others. My point is, there were high-rated guys available the past 3-4 years and we got none of them.

From what I understand about his contract, we will have to pay him 9 million dollars if we decide to keep him next year. I know he's hurt, but he has only produced 3 tackles and a fumble recovery in 3 games.

He sat out the entire pre-season, and we were assured he's ready to go. It looks like he is going to miss this week's game, so with a quarter of a season gone, he has basically done nothing. I thought in order for us to success, he had to be as good as advertised, and he hasn't even been close.

Let's say he turns it on at the end of the year and somehow produces 7 sacks, 2 FF and 30 tackles. Do you seem him staying on the team next year?

for what its worth. Broddius was talking about his play in Rams game and said on several occasions he was completely getting blown out of the play by OL. Its way early but something to keep an eye on.

I think Melton had to have been not at full strength. He claimed to have pulled his groin-string in pre game warmups and to have soldiered through. Who knows how significant it was, but he looked a lot worse last week than he had the in TEN, fwtw.

Hard to believe there is a thread about if we should keep a guy in the off season after ONLY 3 games. Can we at least get to mid- season.... SHEESH!

First part is so wrong. Carry on.

We didn't pass on those guys just because we were hanging on, a lot of it is because the team just didn't value the interior line. They thought Ware was enough and that he was going to be here forever. They certainly still haven't shown much value for the 1-tech just like they didn't care about having a true NT in here when we were a 3-4.

The teams priorities are finally turning around, but for ages we've just dumped money and resources on flash positions like WR, CB, RB, etc and ignored the trenches.

You can't crow about how wonderful three first round OL in four years is and at the same time complain we didn't take any of these first round DL.

I remember Ryan liked Muhammad Wilkerson and Marinelli liked Sheldon Richardson a lot, but you only get one first rounder per year.

We've played three games. So like some have said, we will wait and see what happens over the next half of the season. If he really plays well as in extremely well, then they will try to renegotiate. If so so then they'll just wait and see what happens the rest of the year. If he stays injured and irrelevant or nearly so then they can bring him back to TC with a show me contract.

Certain stats have shown Crawford to be extremely efficient despite not getting any sacks. Not sure how seriously to take that. But with the likely short term move to DT with Melton and McClain out, Crawford has a chance to show something. I think they desperately want Crawford to be a long term starter. Question is, will it be at DE or DT?

I think it's safe to say that we will unfortunately not see that type of production from Melton later on in the season. At the current number Melton will be due next offseason to retain his services, I say let him walk and go lookin for some space eaters in the draft or find one in free agency that is trending upward.

Now if Melton begins to turn the corner in game 5, and continues to remain consistent, with signs of improvement, then keeping him might need to be a priority. But as it stands right now, his current production and rather fragile state does not warrant a second season in Dallas.

biding my time on melton...I am happy he is there since he is being paid below what his value likely is...let's revisit prior to game #9...perhaps we can talk then about melton Crawford, spencer and Lawrence being options in the rotation at that point

Anytime you take on an injured d-lineman with the serious knee injury that Melton had, you can't expect quick results. It may be mid-season before he recovers sufficiently from that problem to return to peak form. Much
the same can be said of the others that were recruited from the ranks of the "walking wounded" this year.

If he is still considered a base level necessity for this defensive box for Dallas, I then challenge the initial premise of the statement.

The defense seems to be improving, and without that already presence added to last year's mix. Perhaps, if not with fixed glaze around the accountant's red cash flow pie-chart projections, we could see the real values being developed here:

1. Buying into a system being run by Rod Marinelli
2. Development of a unit's function as a whole
3. Outside pressure and the roles of more than Melton, are on the table for observations as well...more pointedly, Lawrence and Spencer. This will affect both positional and cap considerations into the immediate future. The team has to get better outside pressure to be a really good defense. We shall see here...

Myself, I won't paint myself into a corner on cap indicators, until the rest of the room's appearance shores up.
