I don't care what anyone tells me. I don't care if he is a first ballot hall of famer. But Eli is not elite.
No he wasn’t and neither was flacco but both had elite runs when it counted

Even Eli, Flacco and Foles played like elite QBs when needed. Foles threw for almost 400 yards in the NFC Championship Game and Super Bowl. Flacco threw for 11 TDs and 0 INTs in their playoff run. Eli made some big-time throws to outplay Brady in the clutch...no average spare QB could have done that.

With Eli and Flacco, they were both 1st round QBs that had all the physical tools of a franchise QB. Their careers may not have been elite but on any given day, they could still show up and make elite throws when needed.
Even bad QB's can make elite throws at times.

How then do you explain Eli, Flacco, Foles, Dilfer, Johnson?

You can add Mark Rypien to that list too , yet guys like Marino, Fouts, Tarkenton, Kelly, Esiason, Romo and Ryan for various reasons didn’t.

A bounce here, a kick there, a bad call, bad weather, injuries - things have to go just right.

Ask Eli - he rode two historic defensive playoff runs after their defense was average during both of those SB seasons.

You can’t explain it.

Sort of. Eli tried desperately to lose to SF in 11, but Kyle Williams and the D kept bailing him out. He was awful.

That's 21 years of Super Bowls, and those that will likely make the Hall of Fame make up 17 of those wins.
Why the inconsistency in how you spell it? In the thread title, you spell it wrong but here in the original post, you spell it correctly... Super Bowl.

Thought he had like a 99 passer rating in the 3 games in 11. Plus was mvp of both Super Bowls he seemed to save his best for the big stage cause he had a lot of average moments

Disagree. He’s just maligned by Cowboys fans who can’t accept Eli was better than Romo. Any QB who beats the Pats in two Super Bowls is elite to me.
ah the old bottom line mentality. Look at his stats for his career, mediocre. Got lucky two times.

Those QBs didn’t win any of those titles by themselves. All of those were really good teams, and great teams in many instances. All of those teams had either dominant defenses, excellent overall offenses, or both.

That's true if you consider them to be great because they won Super Bowls. It's a rather circular argument, isn't it?

What criteria did they use to select them for the Hall of Fame? I'll bet winning multiple Super Bowls had something to do with it.

How many were considered elite the day they were drafted? Most likely some of the ones drafted top three overall. However, it's about a 50/50 split with half of the Super Bowl champions being a top three and the other half being drafted anywhere from the bottom of the 1st round to the 6th round.

But do you want to know what they all had in common? None of them had a better rookie year than Dak.

I get both sides of this argument. Some of those qbs didn’t have great Super Bowls….. but in order to get there they had to at times play very well.

Mahomes for example didn’t play great in his SB win…. But the three games prior he led his team back to huge comebacks.

with regards to dak nobody is saying he has to play perfect (especially if our d is legit). But he’ll have to probably win us a game or two if we want to win it all.

So what exactly is your point here?

Not every SB is won by a great or elite QB, your own list proves that. There are 4 guys on your list that are clearly not Hall of Famers, and last time I checked 4/21 is about 20%. So over the last two decades 80% of SBs have been won by HOF Qbs and 20% have not. Clearly having a HOF QB makes it a lot easier to win a SB, but you still have a 20% chance if you dont.

Now if your point is that every HOF QB wins a SB, that again is clearly not true. There are QBs in the HOF that dont have rings, it is not a requirement to be in the HOF.

So again, what point are trying to make here?

Brady threw for 145 yards and 1 td in his first SB. His defense shutdown Greatest show on turf only allowing 17pts. Rams were averaging 32points a game all season.

So what was the main reason the Patriots won the SB in 2002? Was it that elite 145 yards 1 TD passing game? LOL.

They had good supporting casts. All the QB's that you mentioned I would argue Dak is in their league or a little better. I'm a Dak homer but I can see, and admit, that he'll never be elite. He's an Eli, Flacco, Foles, Dilfer and especially better than Johnson. Those Giants, Eagles, Bucs and Baltimore teams had the right momentum and the right time and played great as a team. I feel Dallas can do that with Dak, especially this season. But with Dak's salary cap coming into play I strongly feel it's this season or next season. When Dak's inflated cap number hits then we will either have to draft exceptionally well or get exceptionally lucky to win it all past 2022 because we won't be able to support a supporting cast. great teams win super bowls great QBs are part of the team and typically they don't beat themselves.
I agree, well said. We don't need Dak to be super elite. Just not the last six games of Dak. I feel this team can be great.

I have it as:
  • Brady (6) - Play with a 50% discount
  • Elite (4/14) - Mahomes and Wilson able to build the squad while on rookie contract
  • Top Tier (6/14) - Very good players but not really MVP candidates
  • Below average (4/14) - Guys that are not in the top half of starting QB's

Agreed. But they were very well prepared and had a great supporting cast. Same with Colin Cap. of the 49ers.
