I look at Dallas, NE, SD and Pittsburgh DE on NFL.com for sack totals, didn't find another DE that plays the 3-4 that had more than Greg Ellis's 8 sacks.

I'm sure I've probably missed another 3-4 defense.

Did another 3-4 DE get more sacks ? Let me know if you find one.

If you do find one, let me know if they made the pro-bowl.

Kind of misleading. The bulk of Ellis' sacks came from the nickel front.

Other 3-4 teams don't play a nickle front ? Why not ? Maybe they should or we shouldn't ? What do you think ?

Wonder if Adam has stats on how many of Greg's sacks came on a nickle front vs. normal front.

According to ESPN, Ellis had 7.5 sacks out of the shotgun. He also had 7.5 out of 3 or 4 wide sets. In other words, nickel.

Ellis is unique because he is a guy who can play a 3-4 end, but has edge rush skills. Most 3-4 ends do not.

Sounds versatle...hope we keep him.

But again, what about the other 3-4 DE ends in the leauge ? Are they all replaced by LB'ers (or nickle DE rushers) in the nickle on those teams ?

The Richard Seymore, Luis Castillo, Jarvis Green, Aaron Smith type of guys.

All I was asking was...that did any team that plays a 3-4 defense have a DE that got more sacks than Greg ?

Dont forget that he is a pretty good run stopping defensive end as well. I really hope that we do keep him.

Ellis garnered his sacks in nickel pass rush. Mostly 4-3 sets.
Over time Canty/Spears will play more and Ellis job will go to a younger DE pass rush specialist.

The LBers will get the sacks and force more interceptions in a true 3-4 Mold.

We also need another anchor 3-4 NT to rotate with Fergi!

Nors, Being a NE fan or at least resident expert. Do other 3-4 teams have nickle packages too ?

The question still stands. What 3-4 team has a DE with more sacks than Ellis got ?

The nickel is not the 4-3. A four man front does not mean 4-3. 4-3 means 4 lineman and 3 linebackers, not four linemen, 2 linebackers and 5 DBs.

What's also impressive, is that for most of the season, he was rotated out 50% of the time. 8 sacks in part time duty, and almost no duty the last 5 games or so, is pretty darn impressive to me.

I'm one of those who wanted trade him cause he was unhappy here with lack of playing time but I did express my concern over who would make up the loss of his 8 sacks if he goes. If we can keep him happy by playing him more and he continues produce 8 sacks, or even more, with more playing time, sure would be glad to see him stay.

In any case, with Ellis' cap friendly contract, I don't think he's going anywhere.

Pretty sure that DE in San Fran (Bryant Young) had 8 sacks and they also play a 3-4.

I know he got at least one of his out of the 3-4 defense (against us. Thanks, Petitti).

He had sacks in 4 games:

09/11 STL 3
09/25 DAL 1
10/02 @ARI 2
10/30 TB 2

Ellis got most of his sacks in the nickel. That's why Jerry and Bill want to keep him around, he's not too expensive, can play a little 3-4 and was very good in the nickel.

If he had to play 3-4 DE full time, he wouldn't get that many sacks. Essentially, Parcells found a way for him to be effective in the 3-4.

I wish Ellis would grasp that concept.

And that equals 8, same as Ellis.

Yeah but the nickel requires 4 men to put their hands down on the ground. Forcing the line to have assignments on each person individually. You are basically running a 4-3 when you go into nickel, leaving you one on one with the Tackle only.

When you're playing an exclusive 3-4, you rub noses with the Guard all the time. You are double teamed alot, but when you kick to a nickel, it's one on one with the tackle.

Ellis is a 4-3 dlineman, and that is a fact. When he was asked to play the 3-4, he was swallowed up like a fish in a whale. That's why he was pulled for Canty. Plus, when he was in a 3-4 allignment, he did not get his sacks. No way Ellis fights thru a tackle and a guard to get a sack.

My point is, if you were to put Jason Taylor from the dolphins (sack guru) in a 3-4, he would not succeed until they moved into the nickel. That makes Ellis a situational DE, and we can get someone like that in the draft who would make alot less like Darryl Tapp.

No, you aren't. They are two completely different defenses.

I'll tell ya Rich, to me, I think he has figured it out. I just don't think he likes what he's learned.
