"'I picked up the phone and called Don Shula myself and told him I wanted to come to Miami and play for Miami,' Smith said. 'Because I knew Dan Marino didn’t have a running game.' Smith said he told Shula, 'I want to help you and help Dan get a championship. I said, "Bring me back to the state of Florida." He said, "Well, I don’t know if I could make that offer." He said, "If I do make this offer and you don’t come, all my other players will see what I put on the table for you and it’s going to mess up my chemistry." Smith’s response was he wanted Shula to 'just put something on the table' that would make Cowboys owner Jerry Jones say, “I cannot match it.”' Still, Smith said, Shula wouldn’t budge: 'I can’t do that.' Smith was incredulous. 'I said to myself, ‘Really?’ ”

Wow, just wow! There was a time when Emmitt Smith seemed indestructible.
At some point, old guys do well to quit dreaming. Surely, he was in jest? :omg:

As if Emmitt was a free agent? Shula couldn’t have signed him for just money. Would have been a two first rounder situation and I still don’t think Jimmy (yeah, not Jerry…the actual guy who was in charge of personnel) would have done it even then.

Things were WAAAAYY different back then for the Cowboys, the RB position, and the league and game itself.

WAY different.

That's the year Emmitt held out and we lost the first two games with him out of the lineup. Emmitt was that important to those teams, but it took two losses for Jerry to realize it....

Jerry was such a boss for bringing in Jimmy. Goat move by Jerry. Very smart move. Smart owner for doing that.

When people try to discredit Emmitt by hyping his teammates, I always bring that up.

"Why did the '90s Cowboys consistently suck whenever Emmitt was out?"

Greatest RB of all-time.

This is the first time I ever heard that. From what I remember, Emmitt had a meeting with the Dolphins and they canceled it because they thought Jerry would just match whatever offer they gave Emmitt.

Plenty of irony there.

Those same Shula Dolphins in that same year, 93…came to Dallas on Thanksgiving in the snow. We know what happened on that day, but from there, the 9-2 Dolphins never won again and missed the playoffs. Dallas never lost again and won the Super Bowl.

Shulas 72 Dolphins were the only perfect team in history. The 93 Cowboys were a remarkable 15-0 when Emmitt played a full game, and 0-4 when he did not.

in the end, the right thing was done. Jimmy and Jerry would have 100% agreed not to trade Emmitt if Shula would have done this. Dallas knew what they had.

I don’t know if teams really valued draft picks like that in 1993. Especially stat would have been late first round draft pick. Lots of trades occurred back then that we’re head scratchers

well the only way that could have worked, is if he asked for a set amount, and agreed to come no matter what if shula ponys up that amount.
and that is if smith was a FA then contract expired etc.
I know jimmy would try to stop it.

The other thing is just the addition of smith doesnt mean that he will be as effective as he was with dallas.
you have to have the right coaches, playcaller, and OL as well.

And jerry was liable to match any offer shula made, so no wonder shula said no.

This is the same guy that initially asked for a fee to appear at the Texas Sports HOF after they called to tell him that he had been elected....not making this up. Luckily, his agent or someone close to him jumped in and set him straight before it leaked out everywhere.

Nah, Jerry was the guy even back then. Jimmy could only make roster moves with the middle to the bottom of the roster, he had to get Jerry’s approval to make a move with any of the top half of the roster, everyone knows that.
