Emmitt Says He Wanted to Join Dolphins in 1993: Shula Said No

That's the year Emmitt held out and we lost the first two games with him out of the lineup. Emmitt was that important to those teams, but it took two losses for Jerry to realize it....

And for Michael and Charles to beat up the wall in the locker room after that second lost. That got Jed’s attention.

Sometimes I wonder what would have happened if we had beaten Buffalo in that second game to go 1-1. I think we only lost 13-10.

Emmitt was on the cutting edge of free agency, he was a true mercenary and that's fine with me, some seem to have a problem with that. He was supposed to be loyal when it was the Cowboys that cut him?

Now, there is no loyalty from anyone beginning in college. The greatest team sport has evolved into the Me sport and from where it was for years, in college and the NFL, I have no problem with that. The pendulum, the payday pendulum, has swung all the way back.

When people try to discredit Emmitt by hyping his teammates, I always bring that up.

"Why did the '90s Cowboys consistently suck whenever Emmitt was out?"

Greatest RB of all-time.
Yup same here. I always bring up the 93 season and if it's all about the line than why couldn't Derrick Lassic do anything when Emmitt was out? The defenses weren't zoned in on the run game and Lassic that's for sure but yet they couldn't run the ball.

Emmits great career may have ended up totally different because the Dolphins were built around Marino and his arm...even when Jimmy got there that didn't change.

He didn't hold out - he wasn't under contract. He was a free agent.

If Herschel Walker got all those picks, I can only imagine what it would take to trade for #22 in his prime. Might as well forget the Draft for the next three seasons. Don’t blame Shula at all.

Wow, just wow! There was a time when Emmitt Smith seemed indestructible.
At some point, old guys do well to quit dreaming. Surely, he was in jest? :omg:
And everyone thought he was a loyal Cowboy...I got so much hate for pushing for his departure.

Shula knew it wasn't up to Emmitt to make this trade. It was wishful thinking by 22. Shula nailed it.
