Atlanta Falcons: Assistant head coach / secondary coach Emmitt Thomas will not return.

Keep an eye on this guy. Wade really likes him and tried to get him here to coach the secondary before. I realize we already have a secondary coach (2 if you count Maxie), but this is one of those guys you make a position for.

I would take him so fast. The only DB Coach I like better is Dennis Thurman whose teams always seem to take away the ball.

You would cut Dave Campo?????

They could cut him, or just find some other job for him on the team even if it is just in title alone.

In a heartbeat. He shouldn't have been brought back. We should have hired Dennis Thurman.

First off, Campo is a great secondary coach and was a great re-hire. Second, the Cowboys DID try to get Dennis Thurman when Billick was canned, but the Ravens refused to let the Cowboys speak to him. (ie, said they planned on retaining him even though they hadn't hired a new HC yet)

INTs were never his secondary's strength, but while a secondary coach he has produced some VERY GOOD defensive secondaries.

Look at how well the secondary is playing now? Hamlin was ready to be left for dead, Scandrick too. Jenkins has turned into a top 5 corner and of course Sensabaugh and Newman are playing well (though you can see age is really starting to affect Newman)

This defense is playing the best it has 10+ years. The secondary is playing DAMN well.

If Dat is leaving for USC, they could just demote him to that job.

You know, I doubt they just let him walk. He has probably been talking to someone about a coordinator or head coaching job. I wouldn't get too excited about this. The odds in him coming to Dallas are slim considering all the other options I'm sure he has.

Falcons opt not to renew Emmitt Thomas' contract
Posted by Mike Florio on January 13, 2010 9:15 AM ET

Emmitt Thomas, a Hall of Fame defensive back who has coached the Falcons' secondary since 2002, is leaving the team.

Per D. Orlando Ledbetter of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Thomas' contract has not been renewed.

"Everyone here in the Falcons organization has the utmost respect for Emmitt, and we deeply appreciate his contributions to our team over the years," coach Mike Smith said, per Ledbetter. "We wish Emmitt the best in his future endeavors."

Thomas served as interim head coach after Bobby Petrino bolted during the 2007 season.

In 2003, Bengals coach Marvin Lewis wanted to hire Thomas to serve as defensive coordinator, but the Falcons declined to grant permission.

Thomas, 66, interviewed for a handful of head-coaching jobs during his 29-year career as an NFL assistant coach. The future plans of the former Chiefs defensive back currently aren't known, but the fact that he didn't retire from the Falcons suggests to us that he plans to keep working.

If they want him bad enough they can find something for Campo to do. It's not like Campo is going to be getting his door knocked down for a bunch of other jobs.

But I don't mind Campo either way. Our secondary has played very solid this season.

I would like a DC here, someone Wade can teach and groom, so when he leaves we will at least have a DC with experience in Wades system.

Except for that pesky not generating turnovers issue. That is still an area that needs improvement.
