why all the Campo hate. he isn't HC material but Dave is a very very good position coach and our DBs have played well this year.

I would like a DC here, someone Wade can teach and groom, so when he leaves we will at least have a DC with experience in Wades system.

I like to have another Emmitt on the team. :) Our young corners would greatly benefit from one of the top DB coaching in the NFL.

That was the whole idea with Stewart, was to groom him under Wade as his prodigal son and whatnot.

I mean one failure doesn't mean it would happen again but if it ain't broke don't fix it.

We didn't look to Stewart as a "prodigal son" - he was pretty much just the only guy around who has worked for Wade much - keep in mind that Schottzy lost his job in SD so late b/c of a conflict with ownership over letting so many assistants leave (and looking to have his son replace one of them).

Greg Manusky would have been a "prodigal son" -- Brian Stewart was just the only guy Wade could take with him

Phillips also was after Pagano if memory serves. Stewart was about the only assistant from San Diego he could bring and the Chargers even balked at allowing him initially.

True enough, I had forgotten all those details. I just remembered Wade being so fond of ole Bri Bri and his best defense in the NFL self.

Thats not what I meant smarty. Wade keeps the DC job, but teach someone something. If Wade was to leave, then thats two positions gone. I would love it if he was teaching Joe D some of his strategies and tricks, that way Joe D can be DC when Wade leaves.

Yes - Pagano was the first target

With Stewart, the Chargers balked b/c they had lost so much of their staff and Norv was hired so late.

lol i was just bustin your balls man but i agree with you.

Joe D in theory would make a good DC because of his intense demeanor and all that but you have to know the ins and outs at this level.

In theory, he wouldn't.

It takes more to be a successful NFL defensive coordinator than simply having an intense demeanor. You have to have the pure Xs and Os down well before the personality effect factors into it.

He has absolutely zero defensive experience on the NFL level outside of being the defensive quality control/assistant special teams coach when he first broke in with Denver. He would be better served to stay with his specialty, which is ST. I'd consider him for a head coaching job before I would plug him in as a defensive coordinator.

Thank you for repeating exactly what I just said, in a long drawn out, winded way?

There is no "in theory" to it as you stated. He would not be a viable candidate for defensive coordinator--intense demeanor or otherwise.

Wade Phillips isn't intense. Neither was Dungy, Jim Johnson, anyone. Intensity shouldn't even be a bullet point on the resume.

Now special teams, there is where the intensity issue is a big factor.

People are going to connect intensity on the defensive side of the ball, far more often than on offense.

INTs were never his secondary's strength, but while a secondary coach he has produced some VERY GOOD defensive secondaries.

Look at how well the secondary is playing now? Hamlin was ready to be left for dead, Scandrick too. Jenkins has turned into a top 5 corner and of course Sensabaugh and Newman are playing well (though you can see age is really starting to affect Newman)

This defense is playing the best it has 10+ years. The secondary is playing DAMN well.

I agree, everyone on this forum was killing Campo earlier in the year when the secondary was up and down. Now that they are playing great the same people dont want to give him any credit for the turn around.

11 interceptions? He obviously doesn't coach that aspect of it. If there's one sore spot on this team, that's it, IMO.

I would not be shocked to see Thomas land a job with his old team the Chiefs. They are shopping for D-coordinators and secondary coaches right now.

They hired Romeo Crennel as the defensive coordinator. They might keep Pendergast on as secondary coach. I think Thomas will end up elsewhere as this is more of a who you know versus a where you came from business.
