Remember when this position was THE topic around these parts?

Lets guess our projected safety group that makes the final 52.

Church - Allen
Wilcox - McCray (ugh)

What about this Heath kid? That was a beauty FF he had against Cincy

I think it's still Johnson over Heath, and Heath on the PS.

Heath has been playing very well i think.

I'd keep:

Church, Allen, Matty J, Wilcox, and Heath

I'd rather keep Heath over McCray just because he's played his guts out this camp and seems to know what he's doing in coverage better than McCray. I want to give up on Johnson but I highly doubt they will

My sources (CZ posters) are telling me Matt Johnson could be the Jimmy smith of the safety position (lol) if he's let go so he won't be cut.

Would you consider bringing in a guy like Zbikowski or stick with McCray

Has Allen done anything to stand out in preseason or TC?

PS.. since i'm watching the game right now..

VERY nice job by the OL on the Miles Austin TD pass. Tony had a huge pocket to step up into to find Austin coming across the end zone.

Made a nice break on the pass at the end of the second half.. bobbled it a bit or it would've been an INT.

I think the fact that you aren't hearing much about him shows that he's doing a good job in coverage.

P.S lemme sneak in a post about the exact thing this thread is trying to avoid lol

This heath love is amazing. We haven't heard anything about him. Forces a fumble... . Now he is talked about in every thread.

It's going to be a tough call on whether to keep Johnson or not. I imagine the coaches will discuss him at length. I think McCray sticks, just because our ST's right now aren't playing well, and he's needed. I like Heath a lot, but I think the staff still values Johnson more. So I think they try to sneak him onto the PS.

Read all the tc practice tweets. If he was mentioned it was rare. And he certainly wasn't making impact plays.

But if you want to crown him then crown him.

  • I believe that the picture at safety became much clearer after the game on Saturday night.Barry Church and Will Allen will be the starters and both have complimented each other very well this camp. Church has been the hammer while Allen has been a nice influence in the center of the defense. The biggest question I had coming into this game against the Bengals was how would the backup positions shake out at that spot.

As much as I want to wait and see what you have withMatt Johnson, it is hard to turn a blind eye to the type of camp that Jeff Heath has had since he has seen more playing time in California. I still don't believe that Heath is as good as Johnson as a player but I know that I can depend on Heath to line up on defense and make plays. He has been a physical player in defensive snaps but also been a reliable player on special teams, where Johnson has not. This game is about being healthy enough to play and you move forward with the players that can stay that way.

J.J. Wilcox is every thing I believed he would be when I first observed him on that film from Georgia Southern. Like Heath, he has a physical side and when he learns how to play in coverage, he is going to be a force to deal with. I see think he needs to work on his eyes but from what I have seen from Jerome Henderson and Joe Baker, they can teach him those finer points.

I believe that this club is going to carry five safeties with Danny McCray as the fifth guy and a core special teams player. It might seem like a dangerous situation to carry two rookies in Heath and Wilcox as your backups, but both these kids deserve the opportunity to grow into the position and see if they can develop with more experience.
