No loyalty to Doug Free, the best OT the Cowboys have had since Erik Williams?

BS on that. At his best the Hotel was easily better.

Yes, in game 1; however, if they let Parnell play, there is a good chance that he becomes a top level OT with experience. Parnell has elite physical ability but minimal experience. Winston has the experience, but some reports indicate that his body is in decline.
What makes you think Parnell has elite physical ability?Undrafted, cut by Saints and Dolphins, sounds like a million other players.

Not really... I'd rather draft a RT in the 2nd or 3rd round or go with Parnell.

Sorry, I just fell over with that statement.

Let me help you with the definition of ELITE:

e·lite
/iˈlēt/
Noun

a) A group of people considered to be the best in a particular society or category, esp. because of their power, talent, or wealth.
b) A size of letter in typewriting, with 12 characters to the inch (about 4.7 to the centimeter).

So unless you're referring to Parnell as a size of a letter, I have no clue what you mean.

Let me help you with the definition of ABILITY!

  • The capacity to do something.
  • Talent that enables someone to achieve a great deal.

Bingo!!!

We don't really know what Parnell can do on a regular basis cause he hasn't played enough.

The one plus with Free would be that if he takes a significant pay cut, then they wouldn't have to give out any additional guaranteed money. Most Free Agents, even a low level one like Ryan Harris would probably require some amount of guaranteed money.

With a reasonable salary (after a pay cut) they could have a draft pick compete with Free in training camp for the backup job. If they were comfortable with the draft pick, they would have the option to cut Free before the season started. They shouldn't take Free to training camp without a pay cut because he could get injured and they would be forced to part or all of his 7M salary.

I like this, all around. And you're right about the justification for cutting him after accepting a pay cut. The cut should be required for the purpose of getting a shot in camp.

He's just saying the guy is a very good athlete. It's the reason Parnell even made multiple NFL rosters, and not something you need to fall over about. He's not saying he has elite skills as an OT.

Winston was very highly regarded coming out of USC, but was over rated based on the fact he was from USC. He struggled early but most of us didn't hear much about it because we were Cowboys fans. When you follow a team you are much more aware of their warts.

I'm not sure how much of an upgrade he is over Free, and I'm not a Free fan.

Are you saying that you don't understand the definition of Elite in the context of athletes?

an elite athlete has performed at an elite level. Not just at the underwear olympics. Actually done it on the field in a real game. And to be elite that means done it a lot in a lot of games.

You realize Parnell is going to be 27 years old when the season starts right? It's not like he is some up and coming rookie any more. He is a undrafted FA player who has barely clung onto a roster spot almost his entire time here.

I haven't seen ANYTHING yet that would indicate he has any particularly special qualities that would make me think he could ever become a top level OT.

There are some semantic circles being run here. You're describing an elite football player. There are plenty of elite athletes who aren't elite football players.

We have no idea if Parnell will turn into an elite football player. That doesn't necessarily mean he's not an elite athlete. There is really a difference between those two terms. I thought xwalker was very clearly talking about Parnell as an elite athlete, not as an elite football player.

You're confusing elite player with my statement of "elite physical ability".

Example:
Terron Armstead has elite physical ability as compared to other NFL Offensive Linemen; however, he is not an elite NFL player because he has never played a snap in the league.

He has been the only backup OT on the roster the past 2 seasons. That is not barely hanging on.

I haven't seen ANYTHING yet that would indicate he has any particularly special qualities that would make me think he could ever become a top level OT.
The NY Giants have a backup OT named James Brewer. I haven't seen ANYTHING yet that would indicate he (Brewer) has any particularly special qualities that would make me think he could ever become a top level OT. I didn't mention that I have never watched Brewer play a snap in the NFL.

I've watched every snap that Parnell has played in both the 2 preseasons that he has been with the Cowboys and all snaps that he played in the regular season in 2012. I watched all snaps at least 10 times. In the 2012 preseason and regular season, that included watching both the broadcast on Tivo and both angles provided by the All-22 film from the NFL.

In addition, I have attended the Cowboys training camp and focused on Parnell and a few other selected players. I've been on the field 10 feet from where the were practicing.

I've watched all snaps of the top 10 ranked OTs in the past 3 drafts if they went to major colleges. I watched anything I could find on top 10 rated small college OTs in the past 3 drafts including any All-Star games.

No offense, but I'm going to stay with my opinion regardless of what you did or didn't notice.

You could make that same argument about Romo and Austin too, but it turned out both of them could ball more than a little.

If he is that elite, how come he couldn't beat out Doug Free? Are you an NFL scout?
