IRVING, Texas -- While there has been no official announcement yet, the Dallas Cowboys have hired Steve Loney as their assistant offensive line coach, according to multiple sources. Loney will replace Frank Pollack, who was promoted to the head offensive line job following Bill Callahan’s departure for the Washington Commanders after the season. Marc Colombo, who worked in the scouting department last season and helped coach the offensive line at the Pro Bowl, will continue as an offensive assistant.

Looks like Colombo got beat out for Asst OL coach.. But he's still going to be part of the staff for more OJT..

My thinking was that maybe Colombo wasn't ready to make that commitment yet.

Everything I've read said that he was the 'clubhouse leader' and the job was essentially his if he wanted it.

I think it was a case of them preferring to keep him in his current position in the personnel department along with an opportunity to land someone with Loney's resume.

The worst thing you could do would be to have a OL coach in training. We've already got one guy roaming the sidelines and doing nothing but clapping. What would Colombo do? Snap? Jazz Hands? That's just too much.

Red can jazz hands while Colombo can spirit fingers.

I think Colombo is more than a clap and cheer kind of coach. I think he is more hands on and teaches them technique. Thus I believe thats why they went with someone like Loney with this experience.

I'm guessing this response would be different if the Cowboys hired Colombo.

Why exactly can't you train somebody as the assistant OL coach again? Did you have this opinion when Wes Phillips was doing it here a few years ago?

It would be different because the joke wouldn't work the same way. You caught me. Great job!

I'm making light of the walk-around-head-coach criticism, not the OL candidates. Obviously.

Who knows? Colombo seems to have Coach written all over him, but they were more comfortable going this route for some reason. We'll probably never get enough info to know what really factored into the decision.

I thought Marc was also scouting, perhaps they wanted him to continue focussing on that?

Colombo played in a man-blocking scheme so I don't know how much he knows about the Zone Scheme.

With Pollack not being a long time OL coach, it's probably good to have an experienced guy helping him.

I'm sure that Colombo will still be involved to some extent.

Oh, I agree. I know that everything I've read says that Colombo will still be involved.

This move is purely about having an experienced guy helping with the OL. Pollack and Colombo would make a very inexperienced coaching duo. Another year or two with Loney in the mix and Colombo will be ready for the Asst job and a few years after that the head OL job. Good move to have an experienced guy working with both of them.

I dunno. These kind of moves makes me 'think' the coach has his act together.

Rather than promote from within deserved or not, as has been the case for years, bring in a dude that's legit.

Maybe Columbo is the' rah-rah this is what you need to do on game day' guy but not defined as a day to day coach.

JMO, of course.
