ESPN: Cowboys Save $34M on Cap If Dak Prescott Is Traded or Cut Before March 2024

Sooner or later, the Dallas Cowboys will have to put their money where their mouth is with star quarterback Dak Prescott.

The two-time Pro Bowler is due to be a free agent after the 2024 NFL season. ESPN's Dan Graziano noted Thursday, however, that the Cowboys will have a possible out out this offseason.

He wrote Dallas could save $34 million against the salary cap by trading or cutting Prescott before his roster bonus kicks in next March. He's due to have a $29 million base salary for 2024, and his bonus totals $5 million.

Graziano added that "the odds dramatically favor another Prescott extension that keeps him in Dallas long term." Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has signaled his desire to hold onto the 30-year-old while affirming his general confidence in the player.

His cap hit for 2024 is actually 59.5 million which we will never see cause Jethro will extend him before March.

He’ll get another huge signing bonus and similar to last time initially lowering his Cap hits significantly.

Critics want to bash his current 40 million a year deal but his Cap hits have been very moderate with 17 , 19 and 26 million his first three seasons because of huge 66 million signing bonus .

Cowboys will do something similar in an extension to avoid Cap hits which could hinder building a stronger supporting cast.

All you do is ***** about Dak. It’s ridiculous. Team won 40-0. Everything looks great and you are here still complaining about Dak. Pathetic.
The horror of clicking into a Dak thread and seeing people discussing Dak!

Can you believe it?!?!

Fans all too often look at what these average salaries are for QB’s but those aren’t actually the Cap hits.

So much was made of Dak annual 40 million a year that isn’t actually what he made.

His cap hits have been 17, 19 and 26 million which is a bargain regardless where you place Prescott in the pecking order of current NFL QB’s on their second contracts .

These big contracts are back loaded with huge signing bonuses and why if we intend to extend him will before March to avoid 59.5 million cap hit on 2024 the last year if this deal.

You might be a little slow today. The post was about an article suggesting the Cowboys may trade or cut Dak. Give the million threads dedicated to bashing Dak you would think maybe you could opine on the article and maybe the cap implications. Alas you fall back into your default mode and tell us all how much you think he stinks. Get a new line man. We get it you hate the guy.

This is exactly what I expect from the usual suspects. Even the host of Cowboys Report on YouTube says the same thing. The Cowboys won 40-0 and people still want to complain about one player (who would have actually been 17/24 for about 200 yards and 2 TD's in the pouring rain if not for some drops).

It's either an obsession or an undying need to be a hater. Even he said "find another team" because even a 40-0 win can't satisfy them and make them happy because Dak is the quarterback of the team.

Some people just aren't happy unless they aren't happy.

You should really talk to the mods about all the Dak talk going on in these Dak related threads.

I usually stay away from the Dak threads now, but if he actually gets an extension I will watch this forum either explode or implode from the outside.
There is a non zero probability he doesn’t get a new deal. If Dak plays poorly this year they may not extend him. If Lance looks like John Elway they may not extend him. Lots can happen. Dak could win a SB this year and get a huge deal.

If*

I can play that game too, watch.

If Dak didn't suck we'd be in good shape, but he does and we all know how this season will end.

The only thing that would prevent us from extending him would be another season ending injury . Maybe. .,

I’m not even a huge Dak fan but these Hacks don’t know what they’re saying or don’t follow what our ownership has been saying.

It might be what these Hacks want but they haven’t been paying attention. This Lance acquisition further clouded their minds . Our ownership regardless what you may think are still all in on #4.

I agree. I am a Dak fan and I am happy they got Lance. Because another factor to consider is Dak has missed time with injury three years in a row and Lance is seven years younger.

I think a lot hinges on this season as far as his future here. Either way the cap hit will get fixed, be it by extension or my moving on.

Palpatine got you fooled too. His mastery of the Dark Side provided the illusion of what he always looked like.

Here is one clue. Sith lords can always be identified by their glowing yellow eyes. Tell me. When did you and everyone else first see Palpatine's eyes glow yellow in Episodes I, II and III?

Remember he was always a Sith and hid in broad daylight. ;)
They did in The Clone Wars in a few of the Darth Sidious scenes when you could actually see his eyes.

What some of these Hacks can’t or unwilling to comprehend is these last two seasons are enough for this ownership to stay with Prescott.

There’s no mandate for for more success to extend him. That’s just wishful thinking and a talking point for them.

Yes, yes, Dak sucks. We get it.

Constantly saying so doesn't change the fact that he's the quarterback of this team barring injury. So if you already know how the season will end maybe find something else better to do for the next few months.

Cowboys fans will still be rooting for their team and their quarterback.
