Lock him up. Nothing to gain by risking it. Too much to lose.

At the end of the day they didn't, who really knows how hard they looked at him.

No one would give up a 1st and 3rd for Austin.

No the Jets didn't, they used the opportunity of him being a restricted free agent to have a meeting with him with the thought that he might be unrestricted this year if there would have been a new cba agreement.

He's already in Dallas, so no, there is no team that would give up a 1st and 3rd for a WR who has had 1 thousand yard receiving year in his career.

Several teams will give up a first for a WR that has a grand total zero receiving yards in the NFL this year. So throw in a 3rd and you get someone who is much more proven than a rookie.

I don't know if anyone will be willing to give up a 1st and a 3rd, but I would not make a decision on Miles based on the assumption that nobody will give up a 1st and 3rd.

Jerry is posturing. No reason to committ a franchise tag and salary exceeding $9 Million until he has to on 2/25. I'm sure Jerry would like to get a long term deal negotiated before 02/25. If he can't, JJ will franchise Miles.

Now if Jerry lets 2/25 come and go w/out the franchise tag and long term deal, then I'd be dissapointed.

He's a no-brainer for any team in need for a WR....and arguably at any position in the first round.

You lock him up, and don't look back.

If you give up 1 and 3 for Williams, and you don't give up as much or more for Austin, you need your GM credentials revoked.

For a team to sign him they'd have to give up a 1st and a 3rd plus a ridiculous contract that Dallas can't or won't match. The odds of that happening are pretty slim.

I'd just franchise him unless we can get a long-term deal before the FA signing season starts. I don't want some team with a low-first rounder to try and steal Austin with a poison-pill contract knowing they only have to give up a first and a third for a young pro bowl WR who averages 100 yds/game and 1 TD/game in a starting role. By giving him the franchise tag, now other teams have to give up two first rounders and the math is much different and the incentive to go fooling around with "funny contracts" is much less.

I think it would be a good idea to let Austin play out the year for the $10M and then in the middle of the season try and work out a reasonable long-term deal for both sides based on his level of production during the year.

I can easily see Miles being a $9-10M/yr player. I really wouldn't have any major qualms with 5 years, $50M.
