ESPN Dallas: Phillips' message to Williams is too late

Do you people realize that in the past 3 years, the Dallas Cowboys are the only NFL team to have drafted, signed or traded for a player who is actually not nearly as good as they believed?

That Roy Williams is the only NFL player currently being paid like a pro bowl player in danger of losing his starting spot?

Austin and Ogletree will be the starters next season.

Ogletree should have started this year.

I must have missed something...someone tell me what Ogletree has done to make him that great.

Hey Wrangler. Sadly, it is what RW11 hasn't done that has placed him on the level of Ogletree.

That simply hasn't been stated...as Bill Parcells required a 'show' even in camp. That part is standard, and people were down on Wade Phillips supposedly for a lack of standard.

Roy Williams is in danger ONLY if someone is a true #1 and a co-match of the actual performance of Miles Austin.

Folks, (cough), two of those types of players can hardly be called....loosing out!!

I like CC's post. When I get a few minutes later (I'm out on my iPhone) I'd love to do a comparison of all 32 NFL teams. Look for the thread later today.

I think this is pretty damn spot on.

Nobody would care as much about Otree if Roy was the guy that Dallas traded for.

Na I'd still like Otree and think he'd be great in the slot give the kid a shot i've been saying it since we signed him.

"We are going to play the best player, no matter what," Phillips said.
It's about time, but I'll believe it when I see it.

Exactly, too late? Too late for what. The last time I checked the 2010 season is months away. Watkins acts like the Cowboys are out of it or something.

I agree. Watkins is probably going for the "tellin' it like it is/hard-hittin' reporter" thing. It's certainly not "too late".

Having said that, I'm really looking forward to watching Ogletree next year. He looked like a quality pro right from the start and seemed to have a rapport with Romo - even in preseason as a rookie. He looks like another FA gem for the team that seems to be the best at finding them. Guys like Romo, Austin and Ogletree would have been drafted when the draft was 12 rounds. The shortening of the draft has probably helped us since Dallas is one of the more appealing destinations for a young player and Jerry isn't afraid to hand out a larger bonus to get his guy. Our scouting dept. really deserves credit for late round finds (Ratliff, Crayton etc.) and these FAs.

Catch the ball when thrown to him. Not fumble the ball while running down the field. Shown a burst of speed. Make good cuts. That's all.

Now, ask yourself the same question about Roy Williams. What has Roy done as a Cowboy to make him that great?

I like Roy as a WR and am not dogging him just for kicks and grins. I just think Ogletree, for whatever reasons, is the better fit at WR for the Cowboys at this time.

Is this gonna be the new line thrown out there to justify this botching of a trade?

At least he's not the only one?

Williams doesn't trust offensive coordinator Jason Garrett and isn't that enamored with quarterback Tony Romo.

For Watkins to come out and say this, it must come from either party. If RW indeed has swallowed the pill T.O. left on the counter, then it's time to cut him right now because then it's not about physical issues, but mental issues.

If this is just the other side ( Romo/Garrett ) perception, then it's time to clear the air and get on the same page.

Cowboys don't need any BS entering this off-season or season.

Is Roy quoted with saying he doesn't "trust" Jason Garrett? No. Is there a quote by Roy saying how he isn't enamored with Tony Romo? No. Oh, I guess Watkins can read Roy's mind as well. And this guy gets paid to write articles like this? There's ESPN for you.

Don't be naive.

I'm not saying that part of the article is accurate, but, BELIEVE ME, athletes send messages through the media as well as coaches.

RW doesn't have to go on the record to speak his mind. He wouldn't be the first or the last one either.

The problem is that Watkins is the only reporter to even imply that Roy feels that way.

All other reports have been the opposite; that the OC and QB not trusting. I think that Watkins could've expounded a bit more instead of basically just throwing it out there as a throwaway line.

There is not one single local hack that if he was on the ground on fire I would stop to piss on.

Watkins drivel is exactly what is wrong with so called sports journalism today. He quotes no sources for what he claims Roy williams "feels". He left a lot of what Wade said OUT of his article to push his personal agenda of stirring the pot. Nowhere in there does he admit that most of this came out of his rear end.

Usually athletes confide in one reporter and use him as their personal unofficial mouth piece. For whatever reason, perhaps contractual ones ( such as the Bengals' clause ), perhaps because they don't have the courage to sign their name to it for fear of repercusion, but they rarely trust or use more than one.

This is what leads me to believe that he's speaking for RW or that RW didn't denied that part nor prevented Watkins for putting it out there, even if he was off the record.

Look, Watkins is not a fool. He knows the type of heat he was going to create when he threw those lines out there. He's not going to do that just for the sake of printing a story, and in the off-season of all timing. It's not worth his career, which is what he's putting on the line if he's creating this out of thin air.

OR, I could be reading the message wrong and it's not RW, but Garrett and/or Romo who have that impression of RW's feelings.

But either way, it's out there now and it must be taken care of. Can't let this fester well into the QB schools, training camp, and season.

How about "you can't make an omelet, without cracking a few eggs"? Would you prefer that?
