what consequences to Watkins career? Hacks make up stuff all the time with no sources to support them and nothing happens to them. Watkins knows that today you can lie and make up all you want and noone will care enough to do anything about it. It is incredibly hard to sue for libel or slander if you are in any way considered a public person. Just look at all the garbage the National Enquirer and other rags publish every week. Unles he says Roy was punking a dog in broad daylight in public he can say whatever he wants with no fear of any consequences.

It's about time, but I'll believe it when I see it.

**** 'em.

I'm so tired of Roy's bull**** in the endzone.

I am not tired of it. If he is doing it, it means we actually scored. So I hope to see him "hook 'em" in double figures next season.

Believe me, this couldn't be any further from the truth when it comes to this guys covering the NFL.

There's a difference between feeding the fire by reporting he said/he said's back and forth AND making up stuff. This guys don't do that. They don't need to and to be 100% honest, they know stuff that would make most people's hair stand up but don't report it because it's not relevant to their field.

:confused::confused::confused: How?

Care to expand on that at all?

INDIANAPOLIS – Wade Phillips said his confidence in receiver Roy Williams remains high.

The Cowboys coach also stressed that Williams, and the staff, must continue to work this off-season to figure out how to make him more effective.

"He knows that, we know that and we keep working," Phillips said.

Phillips acknowledged that Williams will always be held to a high standard because he's a former first-round pick and the Cowboys gave up so much to acquire him. The unexpected rise of Miles Austin didn't help with the perception of Williams.

"Miles has come so far," Phillips said. "Nobody knew he would be that good. He's got to maintain and try to do better.

"Roy's got to get to that level again. Part of it could be us. I'm not saying it's him."

Owner Jerry Jones has already said the coaches need to find better ways to use Williams. As for the opinion that Patrick Crayton or rookie Kevin Ogletree should have been starting over Williams by the end of the season, Phillips said, "I don't think that was true."

What if Crayton, Ogletree or another receiver performs at a higher level than Williams entering next season?

"We're going to play the best player no matter what," Phillips said.

Where in this article do you find the message that Watkins was trying to convey? How's that for *expansion* ? :lmao2:

Randy I find it hard to believe that you are that naive or that oblivious to the current journalism world.

True dat. If they reported most of the stuff they knew, fans would be shocked.

Besides, a reporter who fabricates stories isn't going to be on a beat very long.

Fans who think reporters like Watkins fabricate stories haven't worked in the field of journalism.

The problem is that Watkins is the only reporter to even imply that Roy feels that way.

All other reports have been the opposite; that the OC and QB not trusting. I think that Watkins could've expounded a bit more instead of basically just throwing it out there as a throwaway line.

I don't want to make this a racial issue, but you'd be surprised what black players confide in black reporters, especially beat reporters like Watkins.

When people trust you or think you're "one of them," they tell you a lot of stuff off-the-record or on-background that they wouldn't normally say outright on on-the-record.

You know the story from Peter " Burger " King about the combine when he said " if I told you the name of this person, you'd pay closer attention " ?

Well, if I tell you the name of my one of my best friends, or better yet, what I've learned from just hanging out with him having a good time, about his job, people would have a different perception of most sport journalists. Mind you, I'm talking about beat writers, not necessarily columnists, who get paid to express their opinions.

Best I can sum it up is this way: it's all a game, very similar to corporate gossip, only with millions of fans reading all opinions the reporters, who most are truly just messangers, are caught in the middle. Not that anybody needs to feel sorry for them, that's their job and what they get paid good money ( the good ones, at least ) to do, but the point is that this guys really don't need to make stuff up. There's just so much " stuff " out there ( read between the lines on the word " stuff " ) that there's no need to invent it.

SO a guy who used to be a journalist and another that has a friend who is one are saying that sports journalists are reliable. Sorry but you two hardly qualify as objective sources.

All I need to know about sports journalists and how they are treated if they lie is look at one Skip Bayless. He lied in print saying that Troy Aikman was gay. The man was hired on with ESPN. He not only stayed in the industry but he got a promotion.

Its pretty obvious to me that the other Dallas mediots have taken notice and realize that sensationalism and innuendo sell. JFE was at one point my favorite beat writer. She changed from trying to report facts to gossip and innuendo and she gets a radio show.

Tyke you always talk about how they wouldn't stay on the beat if they did but I cannot think of a single mediot either on the national scale or in a major market thats been fired for fabricating something like this or anything else for that matter.

I believe the Cowboys would cut Roy Williams before falling that far down the roster.

I agree with you whole-heartedly.

This is the lesson the current "business" state of journalism tells its' writers and reporters.

The National Enquirer showed everybody that contoversy sells - even if it isn't true.

And now you can plainly see yourself that ESPN is a business that just happens to involve sports.

Check out the two articles cited here - one from ESPN and one from the Dallas Morning News.

One uses multiple quotes to paint a clearer picture of the subject and the other cherry picks what they want in an attempt to stir up controversy.

Sadly, the company still employing journalism will probably go the 'way of the dinosaur' while the 'fabricators' continue to churn profits.

But we can blame ourselves as a society for that.

Every time 'we' tune in en masse for TO doing crunches in his driveway or Ron Artest attacking a fan, or Tiger Woods' mea culpa press conference, 'we' show them what 'we' truly want.

Well, it had been a few weeks since a mindless "Wade doesn't know how to lead/motivate/have a backbone" article.

Count on Watkins to deliver, complete with the requisite gramatical errors.

Very few people think Skippy Clueless was ever a sports journalist.
